So, last night I'm flying through lowsec and I see another player come up on me. Immediately I try to warp away and he drove right into my ship and rammed me and shot me away at high speed. He then cast some orange beam around my ship and stayed right on top of me for a good couple of minutes before I was dead. Can anyone explain to me what the heck happened?

Probably a Nanophoon. Did it look like a flying garbage can that someone tried to weld some rusty rebar to?
What he did was bump you to keep you from warping, and I imagine the orange beam you are referring to was either nos or a target painter.

Not sure exactly what the orange beam was (hopefully someone else will know what it is), but I know that bumping is a common tactic for preventing people from warping. If you can't align you can't warp.

It wasn't a beam so much as my whole ship was enveloped in this orange crap. Oh well, my experiences with 0.0 space are quite informative. I'm learning very quickly that even with friendlies in a system, you are never safe.

Edited by: Nash Leigth on 21/12/2006 15:02:38 Before your ship warps off, it needs to align to the warp point. If another ship or object bumps into your ship at that time, it will misalign your ship and prevent you from warping. You can bump opponent's ship multiple times during an engagement and that'll be equivalent of having a warp disruptor. The beam was most likely a target painter. He was increasing your ship's signature radius so that his guns/drones/missiles would do more damage to your ship with each shot.
*edit* enveloped in orange crap ... sounds like a nosferatu - did your capacitor run out?

Ok, the first is called a "bump" they rammed your ship so you couldn't align and warp immediatly.
The next common tactic is to warp scramble you(again preventing you warping away), the orange beam is likely NOS(draining your capacitor to prevent you repairing and/or warping away)
Welcome to low sec.

Nanophoon: A Typhoon battleship fitted with a crapload of nanofiber internal structure modules and a MWD in order to be able to fly extremely fast.
NOS: Nosferatu/Energy vampire. A high-slot module which drains the capacitor of the target craft, useful for keeping an enemy from repairing their ship (or firing their guns in the case of amarr). There is nothing else that looks like NOS, and what you describe as 'orange beam' is almost undoubtedly NOS.

Well, looks like I'll be ratting again tonight to make up for the cost of losing some decent fittings and a cruiser. *sigh* From this whole experience, I've learned to not screw around in 0.0 space... if it's not blue, gtfo.

Yes, that was a Nosferatu, as said it drains your cap and gives it to the one that uses the module. He rammed into you for 2 reasons;
1) he wanted to get REALLY close to you, REALLY fast and overshot a bit 2) by bumping you he kept you from warping
Then he just took his time to slowly kill you. Moral of the sotry, don't go into lowsec until you are prepared, both SP wise, knowledgewise as experience wise.

Well, a caracal doesn't cost a lot, relatively, and the only way to get knowledge is to experiement and experience. Now I have a better understanding.

The best way to learn about protectiing yourself from pirates is to start pirating for a bit yourself. Grab a Kestrel or a Merlin (in fact grab a bunch of them hehe) and start having fun. If you know what makes a pirate tick you also know how to fend em off.
