Hi all -
I'm super new to Eve; still on my trial and don't even have enough skills to fly cruisers yet. That said, I had a few questions around how exploration and/or wormholes work since they seem super interesting to me. Have a bunch of questions, hopefully they make sense!
1. It looks like I have two choices between site types: combat sites and relic/data sites. Is there a payout difference between them or is it just kind of dependent on which skills I feel like training?
2. In hi-sec, it seems like the best way to do exploration is to fly a probing frigate (Imicus for me) and a combat ship (Tristan, I guess eventually bigger ships) to a station somewhere; probe for sites in the Imicus; if it's a combat site bookmark it and then go grab my fighting ship to clear it. I will probably not get shot since I'm flying a cheap frigate, although someone might take the loot or beat me to the site if I'm slow at scanning / getting my ship. Is this right?
3. If it is, how would exploration work in wormhole space where there are no stations? Do I fly my combat ship out to somewhere in the middle of nowhere and hope nobody finds it and steals it? Try to stay really close to a wormhole and just go back and forth trading combat ship and probing ship? Only do hacking sites so I don't have to worry about trading ships back and forth?
4. And lastly, how much skills should I train out before I think about going in there? Does it make sense to even poke around in WH space without being able to fly bigger ships?
thanks!

1. You'll get more payout from Combat sites. From time to time you'll get a faction commander spawn. Shoot it and it might drop something expensive. There's also gas sites. It's probably safest to skip those entirely - they need a particular set of skills that are separate to combat and hacking.
2. Yes.
3. Fly back through the wormhole and swap ships. MAKE SURE you bookmark the wormhole on BOTH SIDES.
4. You are definitely too young to do wormholes by yourself. Relic and Data sites in w-space have things that shoot you. There are plenty of guides on the subtle aspects of wormholes. Read those while you train up for it. |

You probably need to be cloaky because the locals tend to get nervous when other people show up on combat scans.
The easiest way into cloaky stuff is probably an Astero but the problem is its a very pricey ride and you can fly an Astero well before you have the proper skills to actually fly it well. Also, other players aside, there is not much in a wormhole that you could feasibly handle in a solo frigate anyway.

You are probably better doing some time exploring in a quiet part of losec till you get skills up. If your not cloaky brush up on the MWD/cloak trick and learn about safe undock/dock bookmarks. Train Racial Frigate to V and get yourself a covops. |

Hey Joe,
First of all, welcome to EVE! Second, best decision to start as an Explorer!!
As others stated before, starting with hacking- sites in WH space is quite ambitious. On one site, you need a propper skill set for hacking the cans, but also need some experience about the general game mechanics, like D-scan, Bubbles, WH- difficulties (C1-C6)... just to name a few. This does not mean you shouldn't try it. At least you can have a glorious death! I died a lot by sleepers and I didn't even undertand, what happened. But is was fun. :P
I really recommend this guid!!! It helped me a lot and it will help you, too. It gives a nice overview about the whole explorer thing, tells you which skills to look at and the pro/cons of different ships. Also how to deal with hostile players and this bloody lovely mini-game.
If you want to stick to the data/relic hacking, don't waste your time in High-sec. Lowsec, Null and later Wormholes are so much more fun, competetive and rewarding. And it gives you a much deeper insight of your possibilities in EVE. EVEN for newbies!!! Just one low-sec site can pay your T1-frig.
Have fun! Maifeld |

My advice would be to train up to covert ops frigates and covert ops cloak. covops frigs have the best bonuses for scanning/hacking and can warp while cloaked greatly reducing the amount of hostile encounters you'll have to deal with. Also learning how to effectively use the directional scanner is ESSENTIAL if you're going to be spending any time in wormhole space.
You probably won't be running the combat anomalies in w-space just yet. I'd suggest waiting until you can fly battlecruisers before tackling lower class combat anomalies, but yes if you don't have a POS in system your best bet would be to scan and then go back through the wormhole to reship. Gas harvesting can be a worthwhile source of income for lower SP characters, you just need a venture and the gas harvesting skill at II.
When I was starting off as an explorer most of my income came from relic sites in nullsec and lower class wormholes. Keep in mind that both sleeper and pirate faction data/relics sites spawn in lower class wormhole and the sleeper ones are heavily guarded. So if you see a relic site with a name like "Forgotten Perimeter Habitation Coils" you should avoid it, but if you see one with a name like "Ruined Sansha Monument Site" you're golden. |

You'll not make much isk exploring in high sec but you can scan for wormholes in high sec and make isk in them.
I believe C1 - C3 wormhole systems can have null sec type data and relic sites with hacking and no sleepers.
A skilled and experienced explorer / scout is one of the most valuable roles to fill in Eve. If you can get good and cloaky scouting / recon you will be a welcomed addition to any wormhole PvP corp. Further you can train up all the skills needed in a short amount of time.
If you are having fun doing it then keep at it and don't sweat the occasional ship loss. |

If you're OK with their "don't shoot people" policy, they are great for learning exploration
If you are at all interested in WHs, send me a message in-game and I will give you a t1 exploration ship and help you get started. We need more people in WH space! |

1. Payout for Data/Relic sites in HiSec is terrible, use them for pracice only as combat sites give more money. Also read Eve Uni Hacking 101.
2. If you have scanning skills to level 3 you can put a probe launcher on a combat ship. Vexor Navy Issue works particularly well. You can the probe down and enter CS without having to go change ships and risk someone else stealing the site.
3. In WHs normal Data/Relic sites have no combat, avoid sleeper sites. Also, fit a Prot Cloak to your T1 frigate so you can lauch probes, cloak and scan down the sites and nobody can see you. Always use D Scan every 10 secs or so.
4. Small ships cost less when you lose them. An Astero is 70 mil, CovOps is 25mil, T1 frig is 2mil. All three hack sites the same. Hacking is a mix of practice and luck. |
