o7 So I'm less than 6 months into EVE, and I'm finally starting to get to grips with PvP and build my skills up to a respectable level. I have Gallente Frigates V trained, along with Interceptors IV and Covops IV. I'm soon to be training Assault Frigates to IV before getting Electronic Attack Frigates to IV. I'm looking to get involved in small gang/solo PvP, and it is more than likely going to be in frigate class ships, because I'm still quite a while from getting T2 medium hybrids.
What sort of options do I have? Which ones are best for what tasks? So far I've enjoyed using a Taranis with a dual prop fit, and I'm looking forward to giving an Ishkur a go when I unlock them shortly. I've heard that Assault Frigates aren't great in the current meta, is an Ishkur still a viable ship for solo/small gang PvP? I have T2 light drones.
So far I've mainly used Tristans, which were great, but I'd like to try something that is a bit different and can perhaps take a bit more of a wellying.
Also how effective is a Keres in small gang? Is good enough to include in a fleet, or are there other options which will benefit my fleet more? I find the idea of using a ship that renders the opposition useless from a distance really cool, even if I'm not able to get solo kill mails with it.
I wanna join up. I think I got what it takes to be a Citizen.

the keres is pretty awesome for some styles of gangs. Damps are rather strong and can turn off ships that could otherwise turn the fight. a few quick examples: 1. damp the logi that is repping your primary 2. Damp the sniper hitting your fleet 3. damp the recon that just warped in/decloaked. The warp disruptor/scrambler bonus is pretty strong in the right circumstances as well. Somtimes you might want to drop it and go full damps, other times you will want a point to hold a target at a range where it probably can't hit you. Might want a scram at times to shut off enemy mwds or stop a mjd play.
ceptors seem pretty popular, and the taranis was always a favorite. although I think the ares is the favored fleet ceptor for the range bonus.
not so sure on AFs. I always liked the ishkur but never really got around to flying one.
t1/faction frigs sounds like you know about the tristan, a lot of people seem to like the fed navy comet.

Sounds pretty good.
I'm undecided about whether to go for an Enyo or an Ishkur though. People seem pretty divided on the topic. Do you know what roles each of them fills best? I'm going to assume the Enyo is more of a pure blaster brawler, and the ishkur can kite with drones?

This is a topic we would rather let you decide on. We cannot know what you like? And while assault frigate need some love they do have strenghts and weaknesses.
Maybe you even grow fond of cruisers too at some point, who knows. There is no rule that diving into pvp with a good tech one cruiser is worse than flying a tech 2 frigate.
As gallente pilot you might love the Atron and Incursus already? Your cruiser options would be the Vexor and the Thorax which are both excellent ships and before diving too deep into the tech 2 train they will have you have fun too.
Just don't disregard them. Just a few years back they were brought up in performance and aren't "weaker" than the tech2 variants, just different.
If you like drone-kiting the Ishkur is custom made for you and if not the Enyo is a fearsome blaster ship. Try both and see what you like.
That said don't disregard the "lesser" ones. Yes I already said it but I cannot stress this enough.

thing about afs is they are slower than (all?) other frigate class ships and have been completely overshadowed by t3 destroyers

for small gang, it really depends on what your buddies are flying tbh, can't give much of an input there. If they go shotgun range with blasters, a Keres is gonna be much less useful than say a Kitsune, among the EAFs, while if they go long range kite, those damps are gonna ruin many a people's day.
For solo work, i'll never not recommend cross training into amarr and small lasers, the slicer is a beast and super fun to fly.
AFs tbh i'd leave alone, they're in a sorry state, especially because of T3 dessies.
On the topic, short period goals might want to include them. While the Svipul is arguably the most popoular one atm, i'd go for the Confessor first, a small gang of those ******* with beams is very effective and super fun to fly.
Also, you can already do the comet. It's an amazing ship. You can super tank it, you can monster dps it, you can dual prop it, you can do a decently effective kite fit, you can go rails or blasters, it's exteremely versatile and a very solid ship overall |

I plan on training caldari and amarr frigates V as soon as I've unlocked all the t2 frigates. And also their respective weapon systems. If I go for a t3D it will probably be the confessor or Hecate. I don't really like minmatar ships.
I know AFs are overshadowed at the moment, but I like the concept of them, and hopefully they will be buffed soon.
I'm not adverse to using cruisers, they just take much longer to be effective in. I haven't got t2 medium hybrids or drones yet, and I'm still working on t2 tank and fitting skills, so cruisers are sidelined for a while.

Yeah that was my reasoning. The skill requirements for all the T2 frigates are universal core skills regardless (Besides electronics upgrades). Also they are much more forgiving in how small and fast they are, and how cheap they are when they pop.

You'd be well served cross training into Caldari Frigates too, Goonswarm federation still uses the HarpyFleet as a core doctrine.
The Electronic Attack Frigates do suffer from one major problem: You will get primaried by the enemy on a regular basis. I fly the Kitsune, Keres and Sentinel regularly myself. All of them are very useful in small gangs, as is the Hyena. Here's some words I wrote on EWAR: http://themittani.com/features/ewar-newbies The main thing you need to get good at is range control and not being afraid to bounce as soon as you start taking fire. Setting up bookmarks is doubly important in an EWAR boat.
Don't overlook the Federation Navy Comet, a very fun ship that can surprise the hell out of people when piloted correctly.
On that note, if you have T2 small hybrids, look at a crosstrain into Minmatar Frigate IV and have a gander at the Daredevil Serpentis pirate faction frigate.

Caldari frigate V and Amarr frigate V are both in my skill queue. I didn't really have an intention of training minmatar, I don't particularly like their ships, and have little projectile turret skills.

I understand this.
Levels of Minmatar Frigate will open up both the Daredevil and the Cruor for you. No need for V, IV will give you some sweet, sweet web bonuses on either hull.
Daredevils are some seriously good fun. I often fly one instead of a 'ceptor in a fast tackle role for my gang. Once that web lands, they're not going anywhere.

A blaster Daredevil will push 250+ DPS in pretty meh fit. Throw in some gunnery implants and solid skills and it's up over 400. Seriously pimp things and you can crack 500.

What's your opinion on T3Ds? I mean I'm hesitant to train one because of the impending nerf, I'm not sure which one I will like most post nerf. Currently I like the confessor, but I have no small energy turret skills, so if I go for that over a Hecate it's an extra investment I guess. The whole reason I am training assault frigates now is because I'm hoping they will be buffed/made relevant again in the near future.
I can't see how CCP will make AF relevant by nerfing T3Ds. They will either have to make T3Ds terrible, or combine it with an alteration to AFs to slightly change their roles.

I can't fly T3Ds yet, but Soon(tm).
They're all pretty powerful, but the 'nod' probably has to go to the Svipul just now.
Reasons: 1: Selectable damage type with projectiles weapons. 2: Minmatar Destroyer V also opens up the Sabre Interdictor which uses the same weapons system and is widely regarded as the best 'dictor. Amarr Destroyer V opens up the Heretic, also a very good 'dictor, but one that uses a different weapon system, missiles, to the Confessor, small energy turrets.
edit: HarpyFleet is not going anywhere anytime soon. Well worth training into. Go on an Imperium HarpyFleet with ~200+ Harpies and be amazed as Marauders just melt under the combined firepower.

confirming u can get 500+ dps out of the dd with impants and bling but then the dd costs 3 or 4 times the amount of a hawk or vengance and may still actually have trouble vs a hawk becuase of the hawks resist profile.

i was killing newbros with a meh fit dd last nite. i love the look and feel of this ship.
didnt know it could push 500 dps yesterday tho.
time for a clean clone
edit oh wow u dont even need bling to achieve 500 dps just leave the utiltiy empty
and then you fly this [RODDEN#1] swap ab for mwd for plex beacon camping, and ease up on the isk by removing a faction mag stab. But way more cooler to use them tho!

Variations of something like this
[Federation Navy Comet, Hull Rails] Damage Control II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Small Ancillary Armor Repairer, Nanite Repair Paste
1MN Afterburner II Fleeting Propulsion Inhibitor I J5b Phased Prototype Warp Scrambler I
150mm Railgun II, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S [empty high slot] 150mm Railgun II, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S
Small Transverse Bulkhead II Small Transverse Bulkhead II Small Transverse Bulkhead II
Acolyte II x3 Warrior II x3 Nanite Repair Paste x100 Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S x500 Javelin S x500 Spike S x500
could also use meta DCU to get cpu enough for a neut / nos, and ofc downgrade rigs to t1 if you want to save a buck
I also like to dual prop the comet, and use blasters, quite a fun ship.
Consider that the rail comet is a beast 1v1, but is not great at engaging multiple foes. For that kind of thing, the navy frig you want is the Slicer |

The problem with the slicer is that everyone knows your fit the moment they see you on dscan. The comet is really overpowered because it is versatile and really strong with each of those fitting options. Scram kite rail comet can murder brawlers with range control and kill or drive off kiters with long range ammo and drones. A blaster comet can get 350 DPS and melt anything that it can close on. An MWD kite comet has superior tank to the slicer with nearly the same speed and damage projection, while a speed fit brawl comet can close on and murder kiters before they know why they're dead. I've even seen dual rep cap boosted comets which sacrifice some range control for a monster tank.
I love the slicer, I think it is a better looking ship than the comet and a fun ship to fly...but it is too predictable. The comet can be fit for any fighting style and is good at all of them.

Nah man not even close, slicer packs a way stronger punch than that, especially if beams (**** tracking tho, manual piloting to keep transversal at minimum is a must or you won't hit ****)
Not only that, thorium doesn't get as good an optimal as a slicer gets, nor as good tracking if you go scorch slicer, drones's dps isn't the same as turret dps, if you are good at controlling transversal guns are gonna hit, drones will miss and graze quite a bit, especially on a unwebbed target,, and on mwd ships they gonna deal abysmal damage playing catch up after every shot. Also you can't heat drones' dps.
Comet's pros in a kiting scenario is cap life and the possibility of fitting a non terriblet tank |

i much prefer the kiting comet over the slicer. heres a slicer fit compared to a comet:
[Imperial Navy Slicer, pulses] Heat Sink II Heat Sink II Nanofiber Internal Structure II Overdrive Injector System II Small Ancillary Armor Repairer, Nanite Repair Paste
5MN Y-T8 Compact Microwarpdrive Warp Disruptor II
Small Focused Pulse Laser II, Scorch S Small Focused Pulse Laser II, Scorch S [empty high slot]
Small Energy Locus Coordinator II Small Energy Locus Coordinator II Small Semiconductor Memory Cell I
23k optimal, 164 dps with scorch. only has 38s of cap with everything running though, and is very light on tank. heres the comet i use:
[Federation Navy Comet, AAR kite] Tracking Enhancer II Pseudoelectron Containment Field I Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Small Ancillary Armor Repairer, Nanite Repair Paste
Warp Disruptor II Small Capacitor Booster II, Navy Cap Booster 400 5MN Quad LiF Restrained Microwarpdrive
150mm Railgun II, Caldari Navy Thorium Charge S [empty high slot] 150mm Railgun II, Caldari Navy Thorium Charge S
Small Auxiliary Nano Pump I Small Polycarbon Engine Housing I Small Hybrid Locus Coordinator II
Warrior II x3 Warrior II x3 Navy Cap Booster 400 x8
144 dps with thorium and warriors, 21k optimal. has absolutely no cap issues because of the booster, you can permarun the repper. its tankier than most brawling frigs, but it is around 200 m/s slower than the slicer i posted. the slicer also tracks a lot better.
i prefer the comet because of its massive tank and good cap, making it a lot easier to fly, especially against multiple targets. |

Valid points all of them really, it comes down to a pilot's preferred strong points really.
One thing i'd like to point out tho, is that on that comet the dps is not the real dps. Drones, even not counting travel time, will never apply perfect damage on a non webbed target, and on a MWDing frig they'll play catch up and pretty much attack once in a while, so the dps gap with the slicer is bigger than it seems (also pulse is closer to 200 hot, beam is more like around 240 hot at 24k, comet's can't OH all of its damage)
Also, yeah. The slicer has terrible cap. Eventually you'll cap yourself out even without the repper, which is there for emergencies and to rep between fights really, it's not something you plan to use in all the fights. Generally, if they can hit you well enough, you run, or you overwhelm with the dps.
But really it comes down to what you intend to do with it 1- want dps and tracking? pulse slicer. 2- want massive dps and **** garmurs up? beam slicer 3- want a ship capable of beefier staying power but lower (or much lower compared to beam) damage? comet

Slicer is predictable of course, just tiny variations on 2 fits really, but gangs will almost always engage a solo slicer (well, untill they know you...) "Sure thing boys we can kill that guy no problem! We're 3 mighty condors! THE STATE'S FINESTS!!! TDs and missiles ahoy!" *blap blap blap btw a kite comet (love it) has nowhere near the dps of a slicer, altough it doesnt cap itself out that fast. Different uses really With drones and whatever the long range ammo (thorium?) you should be approaching 140 no? That's about what a slicer gets.
180 dps with x3 acolytes and thorium, still got nothing on a slicer.

Your slicer fit needs a bit of help, and why dont you run a dual magstab comet? Something like :
[Federation Navy Comet, Federation Navy Comet] Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Small Ancillary Armor Repairer Nanofiber Internal Structure II
Limited 1MN Microwarpdrive I Warp Disruptor II Fleeting Propulsion Inhibitor I
150mm Railgun II, Caldari Navy Thorium Charge S 150mm Railgun II, Caldari Navy Thorium Charge S [empty high slot]
Small Hybrid Locus Coordinator II Small Hybrid Locus Coordinator II Small Hybrid Locus Coordinator I
Acolyte II x2Acolyte II x1
Excuse the 1mn mwd, throw a compact 5mn on instead. That fit is 166dps 26+7km
As for the slicer, it should look like this:
[Imperial Navy Slicer, Imperial Navy Slicer] Heat Sink II Heat Sink II Nanofiber Internal Structure II Nanofiber Internal Structure II Small Ancillary Armor Repairer
Limited 1MN Microwarpdrive I Warp Disruptor II
Small Focused Beam Laser II, Imperial Navy Gamma S Small Focused Beam Laser II, Imperial Navy Gamma S [empty high slot]
Small Energy Locus Coordinator II Small Energy Locus Coordinator II Small Energy Locus Coordinator I
Again with mwd, switch to 5mn Compact. Slicer is 235DPS 25+4km needs ee-603. |
