- Install Eve, if setup does not elevate to admin privilege, do so manually.
(Note: it may take a while for consent UI to appear, since Eve setup is unsigned and contain no cert signature. So Vista treats it as unknown and unsafe exe.)
(Note 2: Vista correctly identified Eve setup as requiring elevation to admin privilege level.)
(Note 3: If you downloaded Eve exe via IE7 then it will contain a zone identifier stream, right click on the setup exe, go to properties and click Unblock to remove block on the exe file.)
- After setup completes, right click on Eve shortcut and select Properties
- Go to compatibility tab, and click Show Setting for All Users
- Agree to admin consent UI
- Set compatibility level to Windows XP SP2
- Click [OK] till you close all file properties dialogs
- Run Eve from the shortcut, and you should get dialog to install DX9 distribution package from unknown Publisher.
- Agree to consent UI, and let it run.
Eve will now be correctly virtualized to run in WinXP environment under Vista, and you do not compromise nor damage your Vista install with meaningless hacks or whatnot.
This was tested a verified.

p.s. If you wonder about the fact that build 6000 is not going to be sold in stores till Jan 2007, and how on earth do I have access to it, then consider the fact that it was already released to businesses and MSDN in Nov 2006.
DO NOT RUN EVE ONLINE WITH ELEVATED ADMIN PRIVILEGES. That scenario is not recommended and it is better to use virtualization and compatibility modes to run Eve until Eve's Dev make it more Vista-friendly.

Note: This approach requires no hacks, no registry editing, nothing special, except following a few steps and working with Vista system to setup a correct compatibility environment.

I highly doubt you need to do all that.
I downloaded, installed and started playing. And I'm running Windows Vista (build 6000) on my PC.
I dont see any reasons why you need to run it under compatibility mode.
The setup also ran just fine for me, no delays or stuff what you said 
Maybe it has something to do with your PC? If it is not working properly or something.

I installed EVE on Vista Ultimate and it worked fine without any changes (discarding the fact that performance sucks compared to XP - need more RAM really to test it meaningfully).
I got my Vista for free b/c I was an active beta tester. Woo-hoo! |

I also didnt have to do any of the fancy stuff you suggested just dloaded and installed works fine.

I've tested it under Vista with 4 gigs of RAM (Intel Core 2 Duo) and the performance is alright, but I get the feeling it's about 15-20% faster under Windows XP. The real problem is that TeamSpeak does not work with my hardware under Vista, so for anything "big" it's back to XP for me ... :\

Didn't have to do any of that on any of the Vista betas, or the retail version...
Mine are/were genuine Technet versions.

you dont need xp compat mode. Eve will run just fine as a vista app. The only exception is that when you need to install the patch, you have to run it elevated.

i still run windows 95..
maybe that is the problem why i can't run eve?
/trying to be funny mode off...
works just fine after installation on build 6000
didnt have to run special modes or whatever..
