To all the Microsoft haters out there who whine about how Microsoft have an unlawful monopoly consider this :-
The PC was developed by IBM and was a closed system to which they licensed an operating system from an unknown at the time software vendor - Microsoft
Along come the Chinese who backwards engineer the BIOS of the IBM pc - Call it 1980's DRM - and develop the "compatible" - hence the term "IBM PC or compatible"
So in short - if it hadn't of been for some clever chinese bloke the PC would be just like an Apple Mac - a closed system - a box on a shelf
The PC was always designed to be "a monopoly"
Another small point - Most of the DRM in exsistence today is pushed on us by the music and film industry - I imagine a great deal of you guys use iTunes without a second thought. All the nextgen DVD formats have DRM that reduces the quality of the video output if the recieving device is not HDCP compliant - which btw is not anything to do with Microsoft
Opengl - does it support soundcards like DX ? or input devices ? or networking ? maybe thats where all the other "guff" is that takes up OMG 10mb of space......
CCP are supporting Wine/Cedega - I highly doubt that they will write an entire new client for the 1% of the Eve base who use Linux
Next people will want an OS/2 Warp client, oh how about one for Be OS ...........
K thx bye
Ok I dont exactly know why you think your on topic but you got it about as wrong as you can.
Firstly, a unlawful monoploy is only such if a court says it. Are you a court? No? Didnt think so.
Secondly, you can have a monopoly on hardware alright, thats called a patent. Besides the pc in the 80s hardly dominated the market, you know there was stuff like commodore, atari, apple. On another note, what made it such a success was that you exactly DID NOT need a license from IBM to built it.
Thirdly, the apple isnt a closed box. Neither the software nor the hardware as such. Large parts of the system are even pretty open, which isnt such a big surprise considering that its nowadays based on BSD.
Fourthly, if the PC was designed to be a monopoly, why was everyone allowed to built one with custom parts? Why where there never any patent conflicts like what would happen if you tried building a apple and sell it as a apple compatible?
Fifthly, i highly doubt ccp will base their decisions on your made up statistics. CCP didnt have a problem developing a game that is only attractive to 1% of the mmorpg market.
Just go on and belittle the linux users, at least i will be able to play the new games WITHOUT having to pay for a crap OS. You know with all the greatness that is windows there seems hardly a problem running most of the major mmmorpgs on other systems too. If even WoW runs on linux, why shouldnt eve?

I think this post is starting to become off-topic.
The point here is not to blame Microsoft or the Linux community. The point here is not to try to define if OpenGL or DirectX is better. The point here is not to try to define if Linux is better than Windows.
I think the point here is to show CCP there are people interested in a Linux client.
Keep the troll / flame down. There are bunch of forum where you can discuss about those topics.

I see action in this post and I am happy. I think it shows, at a certain level, there are quite a few people really waiting for this client û native or embedded.
I am one which is not satisfied by Wine and I am not willing to pay double subscriptions, even to play my favourite game.
I follow this post, and I hope itÆs not going to become a ônext gen OS warö like too many other forums yet.
This is my 2 isk.

Indeed, the current point is that there is a base of players who are being forced to use an OS for optimal game play, by all fair rights if we use UK law, that OS is breaking the law but thats not the point with this post.
Its simple enough, we use linux, most of us probably use windows just to play eve (i do), and once our lil linux client type thing, I can be glad and make the full switch over to an OS I want to use!
Now where's CCP to confirm or deny the Linux client exsistance --------------------------------

Is there any petition going on for linux client?

Nah, itÆs just a post to follow what CCP said concerning a native linux client.
I am pretty sad CCP promise things that never come at the end of the day. Every day we see people wanting X bug to be fixed since Y time, it never comes.
CCP tells us there will be a linux client in 2 or 3 weeks, it never came.
For my part, I am patient, but my patience has a limit, what about you?
I donÆt want to appear rude, but itÆs my feeling at the moment.

Any official word at all on this?
I'm about to build a new gaming rig. Rather not buy Windows with the new hardware.

If they produced a native LInux client I'd use it. Heck if they produced an OpenGL client I'd use it over the DX one. I have programmed for both (OpenGL and DX), OpenGL is far superior performance wise.

If you take into account CCP uses a borked SQL server instead of a "real" one like Postgres or Oracle, it basically says it all about their commitment to Micro$oft.
Hence, unfortunately, OpenGL and a non-MS client are just utopic. Desired by everyone, but utopic. Unfortunately.

Another posting had this link in it: World of Darkness Online could be here in 4 or 5 years.
It has a comment on Mac&Linux client too: "- An EVE Online Mac/Linux native client will be released in August later this year. Penguins in SPAAAAAAACE!"
