Hello you pirates out there,
Ill start with a double yarrr so you can get in the mood.
I like this part of the forum due to the "funny" stories and all, but one thing got my attention. In a good part of the stories some pirates(yarrr) start complaining about the so called carebears comming to "revenge" a fallen corp member in huge numbers of ill fitted (rookie-fitted) ships. They are upset by this.
eurh... yarr yarr... (keeps the attention I think)
Now I am kinda new here, but isnt this a normal reaction? Dont pirates only attack targets they can win from? I dont think a pirate in a lvl 1 cruiser will go attack a battle schip or two.
...yarr yarr...
I think when one knows he has no clue bout pvp and they know they have ill-fitted schips, there is only one answer: HUGE numbers. But even then, dont pirate alliances have huge numbers off experienced players with well-fitted ships to?
In the later, applaud the assembly off a huge rookie force and go kill it!
Just my 2 ISK.

As the person above me said, completely depends on the pilot. Some pirates will go out against ridiculous odds and come out on top, others insta-dock at the first hint of danger.

Fighting back at bad odds is really a method of hedging your bets. Who wants to fight a madman? The carebears may win with better numbers or class size, but what about the next time? You're not terrified of the known, you're terrified of the unknown.
It lets the carebears know who the sharks are and who the guppies are. I'll sacrifice some ships to let that be known. Besides the fear factor, you might gain some experience pts and know what to fit for the next time.

we do this all the time. infact, i should dig up a fraps just for you. it was done by the guy who has now since long quit EVE, who still maintains and is the creator of killboard.co.uk .
In this fraps, you see him warping in on a war target apocalypse, that had guns on, not mining, and killing it. Thing is, at the time he was flying a retribution.
ANY decent pirate will be able to show you a large collection of killmails where some little ship has triumphed over the behemoth.
i do believe the saying goes... "Just because you can pew pew, doesnt mean you can dps"

Depending on my mood I'll take on bigger ships. Sometimes I do that out of boredom, sometimes I just think I have a chance at winning. So when you're in a smaller ship, you just took out something big, and the blob(tm) comes in for revenge, I'm not going to stick around.
Besides that it's irritating. It's always a case of too little, too late, because apparently they only come out when someone's gotten killed, but they're never there during the killing, which would be much more interesting if you ask me...
