I personally hate the new map. Why? Its linked to ctrl+zoom (and this shortcut cant be removed.) It takes what feels like years to open. Among other things and various bugs.

yes pls.
why does "instant" not stop rotating the map? why can i not disable the overlay popups that show system info like sec status and orbit items? and why is there no option to show all system names at once? (yea the old map couldnt do that either sigh) --

I agree it's to slow switching between normal screen and map. Also the constant pop-up info when you hover over a system is annoying.

The new map is a step backwards for sure. A totally unnecessary change imo. While we are at it, let's have the directional system scanner back because having to use the F11 map takes up too much space.

As with all the other topics like this.
Normally I would include many reasons here to why the new map is inferior to the old one. But instead:
The new map sucks, because I said so. I Rakeris, indorse this statement.

New map has great potential, and if some of this thread turns into a critique, it may be helpful.
Example from the OP: if the zoom button hard link is a problem, suggest an alternate approach. Add another button, separating the function? Or make the existing button/function remappable?
It does take longer to open, but if you turn off the animation (it's an option) is it still a problem?
There are a couple of wacky bugs (I think they're bugs), and so list those out. Example: sometimes the mouse control (to pan the map when the map is flattened) ends up pivoting the view point of the map, instead of panning. I've not yet figured out exactly why/what I'm doing when I get this different result.

Edited by: Phrixus Zephyr on 26/12/2006 01:57:37 I don't know if this is just me, but when i start to zoom out everything fades. The blobs and lines disappear and the map become almost transparent. Now its on the black background it makes it almost usless. The only way i get everything to stay at the same brightness is to stay zoomed it, which is sometimes very annoying.
Also there doesn't seem to be as many levels of zoom as there were, it seems to jump between magnification as appossed to zooming in/out like it used to. When it zooms and centres itself without any imput from me is also very annoying.

I have that problem as well, go to system map and back to the main map and that should make it brighter. (Untill you close it) Works for me anyway.

Bugs / Problems / Etc
1) Fading galactic map (zoom out & you can't see anything!) 2) Hovering your mouse over a a balloon opens a bigger balloon with more info ... instead, the balloon should only open if you CLICK on the info thingy 3) Opening a bigger balloon drops the framerate 4) System map can not zoom in close enough (zoom in on the star on various systems, and you still have a TON of icons all jumbled together which makes it extremely hard and time consuming to find what you want) 5) Opening/closing the galactic map with animations set to "immediate" still causes the stars to flip around before actually closing the map ... this results in time wasted 6) The whole galactic map responsiveness is sluggish (usually a second or two between you telling it to do something and it actually doing it ... and two or three seconds between moving your mouse over a system and a balloon popping up displaying the system name and the current info related to the system's color, brightness, & radius) 7) When using the system map in conjunction with the scanner (as opposed to probes), the radius and range should display a cone, or something similar (this might be hard to obtain since the scanner is always scanning where you're looking at... but perhaps there would be a way to disconnect the scanner from where you're looking at in the system map, so that you can see the cone?) 8) I particularly miss being able to zoom in *really* close on my own ship! Currently, when docked, you're zoomed in farther than what it allows you, so if you try to zoom in even more, it actually jumps the camera farther out and then won't let you zoom in!
I must say that it is *VERY* nice to have the overview visible while using the map. That's a godsend for pvp.

The new map looks pretty but functionally its a dispointment.
Its hard to see what you want to see. besides the faint line issues there is a striking design flaw which I think is shared with the old map.
You cant display 2 searches at once, which would be the most obvious utility.
Wherever you went - here you are.
