Edited by: Mysterious Stranger on 26/12/2006 19:10:12 Argh, I've been stuck trying to decide if I want to upgrade my computer or not. DirectX 10 cards are just around the corner so it might be best to wait, but dual core prices have dropped a lot... I don't think they'll drop too much more once quad cores hit the market in full force.
My current rig: AMD64 3200+ Winchester 2.0 ghz MSI Neo2 Platinum 4x 512 megs of PC3200 DDR ram @ 2.5-2-2-5-7 at 2T command rate ATI 9800 Pro All-In-Wonder 128 meg (256 bit) Soundblaster Audigy2 ZX 535W Enermax Power Supply 320 gig SATA2 Seagate Harddrive 200 gig ATA Western Digital Harddrive DVD-Rom LG DVD-RW
I was looking around and I'm kind of interested in dual core, but I don't think it's worth ditching my entire setup for a new mobo, memory and video card under current conditions.
I found a good deal for a E6300 Core2 Duo chip /w a motherboard that supports 2x DDR dimms, 2x DDR2 dimms, 1x AGP, 1x PCI-E (At 4x due to the AGP being there as well).
I think it would offer a good step up, and let me hold off on another major upgrade for a bit until the market figures itself out. The motherboard is $60 CDN which is cheap and can be replaced in the future. The processor is $230 CDN which is a good deal for the performance one could get out of it.
I could try to find a 3800X2 chip on a 939 socket and hope for the best when it comes to overclocking. I had a bad stepping on my winchester and it struggles after about 2.3 ghz.
Not sure what to do, I'm sitting on the fence, and I need advice on how to proceed :)
Edit: I guess it would be good to point out what I like to do with my comp... right now I tend to multitask, I play Eve and am usually doing other things. But Eve is the main game I play. The dual core would help with the multitasking no doubt, but I'm wondering how much of a difference I would experience overall for the investment.

i only had an upgrade a yr ago myself
trouble is hardware upgrades come every 6months or less, not to mention pc have a tendency to bugger up every once in a while (which means i personally normally time my upgrades with a hardware failor ) But its been fine for a yr so im all good.
depends on what you use your computer for, for eve you prolly have until april or there abouts before they start rolling out the graphics upgrades. which if that is your reason for using your pc, might provide motivation for the upgrade then or holding out until then.
not to mention power freek users tweaking their computers constaintly which means they have a tendency to go all out as soon as the hardware comes out.

IMO: Keep the memory, that's nice and beefy. Soundcard= WIN, so keep that too, PSU is nice and should meet your needs. The hard drives are awesome, definitely keep those! Disk drives can be re-used. The only 2 things that are worth changing with your comp is the Processor (old hat now) and the graphics card. For the moment I would just get a new motherboard and a high-end dual core, and try to keep your current graphics card until around march-ish. Then you can get a nice beefy DX10 card for a slightly more acceptable price.
Also you might want a new case, try to get a big one because the new Dx10 cards are pretty huge from what I've seen, 275mm 8800 anyone?
And BTW I would STRONGLY recommend getting a SLI configuration mobo too. I helped - Cortes What a shiny and lovely place here - Eshtir Well lets make it a party atleast :D -Xorus RAWWWR!11!!1!2 SIG HIJACK!!11!1 I found it first, get orrrfff moiiii laaannnd - Cortes |

Case is a full ATX case with enough fans to turn it into a wind tunnel. Space and heat is not an issue :)
The only DirectX native card out atm is the 8800 from what I can tell. At least it's the only one I've seen from the wholesaler in my area.
I've noticed that Socket 939 X2's are getting a little harder to find. Did they stop making them all together?

It depends on what games you play I guess, personally I would wait another 6-8 months until the price on DX10 cards drops down a bit.

the 8800gtx is a bit more then big, there is less then 1/2 1cm space with it sat in my centurion case, awesome card do, can't seem to make it sweat!
Unless theres a game you really want to play now, just wait another 3-4 months before upgrading. I only built my new "monster" rig so early because my other comp died so i cheered myself up

Thanks for the advice all... perhaps it could be a treat for myself when I graduate in the spring. It's just going to be tough avoiding the deals until then :)
