When i die from NPC's my reaction is much less friendly but i still don't throw a hissy fit. I was glad to see pirates adapting to warp to 0 with warp-in gatecamps, got ****** by a three man one. I just laugh, try and open a conversation to congratulate them and ask for any advice they are willing to give on setups or tactics. Then I go buy a new ship and fittings and start all over. The explosions are so pretty even if its my ship doing the exploding.

It's like... can you imagine for a moment that you're in your ship of choice and then a few moments later, you're not? It's like leaving your ship in a hanger except your ship isn't in your hanger at the end of it.

I lost my brand new Brutix today... first time I flew in one
I got caught by an enemy, and he was fitted to take ME out... his setup was perfect... I didn't even get a shot in
Frist reaction... there was an ally in the system, so I tried calling for help, but after realizing he wouldn't come, I just had to compliment my killer... he did a good job.. he knew what he was doing. Bad thing for me.
I had my Brutix for 47 hours, waiting for my Engineering skill to train to an acceptable rate, so I wouldn't be a sitting duck in combat. The sad part was he got most of my items, I tried to get into 0.0 along woth the ship. I would have used the ship in fleet to kill his allies, so I guess he did the right thing

I die a lot so I guess I'm used to it. I NPC'd for over a week to get up enough dough to buy my first Deimos and I lost it today within an hour of fitting it. I didn't freak out or anything -- just shut the game off and spent some time away. I'll just save up and buy another. Life's too short to get stressed about dying in a video game.

First thing i try to rememeber if the ship was insured. Then I try to remember what mods I had on. Meanwhile I analyze what I did wrong that got me pwned. If I'm deep in some hostile territory, I spend the next few minutes worrying about getting my pod out. Once I get out and dock I finally realize I can check my eve-mail for that stuff I was trying to remember so hard. Then comes the fun part of outfitting a new ship

sucks trenn especially so soon... i die all the time and i only get upset if i made a mistake which was avoidable. if i fail to check local and realize too late my target has 4 buddies in system that will **** me off. if i get ganked by a blob waiting the next system over i just roll with it. ive done it to other people enough times to get upset about it. if youre going to take risks in pvp in my opinion you will lose, and you better get used to it. i do miss all my destroyed ruppies though, i loved every one of them.

Seeing that i usually enter combat prepared to die, heck i even undock that way where i live now, the most youll get from me is a GF afterwards. As someone has already said, the fights either won or lost within the first few seconds, most times anyways, so after that its either "ok, im boned/dead/going down" (though i must admit, an "oh noes!!" has escaped my lips once or twice ) or silence except for the FCs commands as we eliminate the target(s).

When I lose a ship in pvp, I don't really care, that was a strong possibility the moment I exited the station with it.
When I lose a NPC ship to pirates, I'm ****ed, but I don't show it. Fact.
for me, its not so much my own reactions when i die, because im the luckiest and stupidest person alive. its other peoples reactions towards my actions that are interesting.
like, for instance. "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING TAKING ON AN ECM NOS DOMI AT A GATE 1v1 IN AN EOS?". responses are usually just like "why the hell not?". and as for being the luckiest person alive, said domi client crashed when i hit 50% hull and i managed to turn my damage control back on and warp out, only to have had a guy frmo my corp randomly warp to that gate in a machariel out of his own random free will and arrive right as the domi logged back on, to finish off his structure.

Depends on the situation. 1v1 to small gang vs 1 I would say gf in local if Im in a combat ship, if Im in an industrial, well I just say nothing, killing haulers doesn't merit kudos. Fleet ops and blobs I just go refit a new ship, we're all there to kill and I'll leave it to the FC the hand out the kudos after the battle.

Yeah.
After I get my pod out, I start talking in local. I tend to say something like "smack smack smack, mega hate, more smack, corp threat, petition threat" or something like that, along with the standard "Good fight!" but sometimes I like to jazz it up, so I say "Mega Sweet Monkey Cheese Fight!" ... or something equally random.

But, if I'm flying a barge and some twit with a 2.7 sec status pops into the belt and ganks me just because he can, well, that angers me. I usually call him a coward in local, because, after all, he is a coward to do that.

I fly Frigates and tend to take on larger ships most of the time. I can afford to lose my ship several hundred times over, so it doesn't bother me when I die now and again. Besides, when my ship and fittings cost no more than 1,000,000 ISK, I won't hesitate if I have the opportunity to take on something that costs five times as much, or more. All I avoid are drone ships.
When I pop, I congratulate the pilot. If I win the fight, I also congratulate the pilot on a good fight. It's usually fairly close since I rarely take on anything smaller than a Cruiser.
True story... popped a Ferox in my Punisher(solo). I'm reckless when I don't have much to lose. Couldn't do that again if I tried, though.

Let me see...
I lost four ships in 30 minutes to CONCORD because of a flag bug after shooting a TV.
I lost a ship shooting a gate from turrets.
I died while accidentally flying my pod into 0.0 cause I clicked on the wrong destination and Strangey shot my pod. I was returning from a mission after losing my ship.
I died while attacking BoB - took 9 hours to die - cause their better players were out. So eventually an NPC shot my ship, I got a shuttle and after the 3rd battle I got shot and podded.
I lost a ship in COSMOS at the Skeleton Comet in Deltole.
I lost 2 ships and got podded once in a war with Decisive Outcomes to Lukkat the Pirate. Made a video about Lukkat because I wanted to meet him - and then he podded me. So really I did it backwards...
Lukkat the Pirate video
I still would like to shoot Strangey cause at least in that podding I was minding my own business and he shot me just to get a killmail cause he WAS at that point a Griefer and may still be one.
None of the other pilots I have had the pleasure of controlling have ever been killed. I guess it is because I am not very cautious...

For me, it depends a lot on how I died. I'm getting to the point where unless I'm in a battleship/t2 cruiser, most of the time (depending on how much is in my wallet) I'll engage nearly anything short of a blob just to see how much I can take out before I go down.
When I first started (I started out carebear, as nearly everyone else in eve did *I think*) I was mega ****ed when I lost a ship. Now I always try and learn from it, it's a short term sacrifice for long term benefit kind of thing.
As long as I don't die to lag or something like that, I'll react by talking on vent/IG to some people about the fight, going over it a few times in my head, what I did wrong, what they did right etc.

The only part that gets me down is counting the number of jumps I'll have to travel to haul back a boatload of Nocxium.
Sometimes I'll wonder why I warped in at zero instead of 25km or some other equally obvious thing.
But overall, I'm always happy that I got a chance at a fight that I thought might be worth going for. I don't need 1v1 to unsafespot, all I need is the right hull type for my transversal to engage, and minimal acceptable diminution or delay of focused fire.
I make my liesurely million isk a day, so I don't fly anything too expensive. That's a few frigates a day, a destroyer, or a cruiser every other day. My favorite thing to kill is pods, frigates and interceptors. Killing larger ships is fun too, but that always seems to turn into a gank. There's just something terribly satisfying about making a mess out of the graceful flight of those interceptors by a perfectly applied volley. Whatever I'm in can just spontaneously combust after that for all I care.

the last (only time) i've been podded was my own damned fault,
Warning kids, Don't try this at home. a rookie in cistuveart was wondering about the effectiveness of concord, so i decided to give him first hand knowledge.
i told him i would fire on him and explained all about concord, what i did not explain was why we do not shoot pods in highsec. hell, i didn't even know he was firing on me, i wasn't even paying attention. total cost, 1 vel with civ railgun 0.00 isk 1 medical clone 10 million+ explaining to your corpmates how you lost a complete set of +4's and a yeti to a rookie in an imicus ... Priceless.

It varies..
sometimes its a short and sweet "GF" in local'
othertimes I have chatted with the guys who killed me, discussed what I did wrong (sometimes its nothing just outnumbered/skilled or gunned)
If I get the " hahaha ur a noob we killed ya noob" type smack in local I just leave it as "GF" and ignore the rest of the immature crap
Its the same when I get a kill, I always say "GF" , and unless under pressure (being hunted etc) am normally willing to discuss what happened and how the prey could have fought differently to try to make a difference to the outcome

Edited by: fire 59 on 29/12/2006 11:44:09 Dying is part of the game. I fight often enough that if i die, it's usually my own fault. Not aligned properly, nt turning repper on or forgetting to launch drones etc. The important thing is to learn from every death and not repeat it. There have been a few where i have kicked mysself becasue they were really silly and looking back you realise your instincts where right.
Generally though, no matter how it happen's, just hop straight back into another ship and get on with it and get your revenge, RAWR
Edit - and merc999 makes a good point, it is fun to talk to who you fought and chat about how it went down and how it could have been different, how to improve etc

Give a brief recap of a day I had two days ago...
Bought Myrmidon and fitted, took an hour.
15 minutes later:
SON OF A MOTHER FREAKING $(*%* $*$**# (%*%&@ #(*%&@( %$&$*#@*&
Bought Thorax and fitted: took 45 minutes.
5 minutes later:
YOU GODLESS ^%(*%$*$* %(^**#(%$ ^%U&^*$*#&
Bought Vexor and fitted: took 45 minutes.
1 jump later:
escape - quit game
Had a smoke on the front porch, logged back on and did my thing. I learned 3 very important lessons, and havent let myself get into those situations yet. I havent lost a ship since. (still a short amount of time)

Assess the situation and calculate how much damage I dealed out before going down, and whether it was worth the loss of my ship or not.

on bring killed.
if its a fleet fight i dont care. i just get another ship asap and get back into the fight asap.
small gangs its no matter cause we norminally kill enough to pay for the losses in loot.
if im by myself and i do something stupid like end up in a 2 v 1 and get ganked. i norminally get a bit emo. then i get a new ship and some friends and try and fix the situation. rwar sig Listen to me on bob radio 00:00 eve time every friday and saturday http://stream1.bobonair.com:8000/listen-broadband.aac.m3u or go to www.bobonair.com |

I then look at the killboard and look at how many ships i have killed with the ship i have lost. If i killed in iskies more than the price of the ship and modules i am a happy Pirate I then jump in a replacement (2 of each ship fitted always) and get even.
Edit: in terms of talking to the people i fight i rarely do unless it was a really decent fight, I prefer to not talk to my prey unless asking for bounties on pods.

When it happens I take it good natured, contact the person who killed me, chat to them and have a laugh, often congratulating them on a kill.
On the flip side when I kill someone I often contact them and tell them what they did wrong and how to do it better next time and give them a kitten.
However..... when I or my alt get ganked while out exploring/mining/ratting by <censored> <Censored> <CENSORED> alliances with their <CENSORED> NBSI I tend to take it personally as <CENSORED> <CENSORED> multi BB/CL/CV fleet vs whatever ship I am in is usually taking the <CENSORED><CENSORED>.

Nah i usually just whine on Vent in the hope someone else will feel bad and fork out for my new mods and avoid all contact with whatever just killed me. Unless i was AFK in which case i swear....alot and make sure that everyone knows it wasn't my fault.
No good do gooders who spout crap about "paying the price for crime" while refusing to pod me so i have to watch them loot my wreck usually get a mouthful of abuse too. Especially the ones who give me a lecture about the evils of pirating and how they're pwning me should be a lesson even though they know i'm gonna go kill another poor sap to pay for new fittings after they took the last ones!
Just depends on my mood wrong time of the month and all that jazz, if i get completely pwned i'll ask why i did so bad but otherwise they can go **** themeselves

I don't die all that often, so I'm not what you would called "used to it," yet. However, I try to be good-natured about it and respectful.
Every time I have gotten killed and/or podded, I've known it was going to happen before I uncloaked or before the shooting started....well, all except once. I wasn't counting on a 2k+ wrecking hit from General Furyan's (TCF) tempest that melted my muninn just as I got out of an interdictor bubble. Of course, it was 2 vs. like 80, so I knew it wouldn't go too well.
Anyway...I usually have a few seconds to come to terms with my impending doom. My first reaction is a quick wave of embarrassment (I've had a couple very embarrassing deaths). Then, I laugh about it. Then I do some failure analysis and move on.
It's a game. If you're not having fun, what's the point?

Before I turned to the dark side, I was killed around 3 - 4 times and podded once less than that.
My general reaction was being absolutely furious. I lost a few kill mails somehow (hence being a little vague about the exact number), but other than that I hang onto them in the hope that I can return the favour one day :)
Since turning pirate/entrepreneur I'm happy to say I've taken down 3 Caracal (fly something else ppl, ffs) without losing my Rifter once.

I feel a degree of annoyance, anger and loss.
Which I am pleased by because the day I stop caring about loosing ships is the day I probably cancel my accounts.
That said when my ship is going down I am normally too busy trying to save the pod to type anything.
If I get podded I'm out of local.
If I survive and my pod is safe, then I'll either say nothing or will chat and joke with my enemy.
Smacking - whether you win or lose - just makes the smacker look like a complete tard.
In times of doubt I ask myself "What would BoB do?", and then do the opposite. |
