Thinking of going to fanfest next year and since I've never been to iceland or fanfest was wondering about details.
I know that the flights are cheap but what about actually living cost..mainly beer, but also food and then somewhere to sleep.
Anyone know when CCP release info for each fanfest..

They tend to publish basic info a few months before the FF itself, with more details as it gets closer.
Food and liquids are not cheap. At all! Dunno where you are from, but a beer can easily cost you 500 isk. I recommend you find some exchange-rate site and convert into your own currency. At the Nordica hotel, which seem to be the hotel of choice for the Fanfests, there is a Pizza Hut just around the corner. A SMALL deep-pan pizza there cost around 1700 isk, I think it was. But Pizza Hut are expensive. Downtown, me and some other guys ate a family size pizza for 1500, so it can be somewhat cheap. Oh, and just for reference - I took a picture of an ad for McDonalds and their McFlurry: 250 isk. ![Shocked](/images/icon_eek.gif)
As for living cost, CCP puts together a package with return-trip flights and hotel for the duration of the FF. you can make your own deal if you want to, but it's not THAT much you save. Depending on hotel, of course.
So have patience, plan for somewhere around late november and don't go wasting your money on things you don't really need until then. Like, girls... Food... A new computer... Save it for Iceland. Save it for the Fanfest. And most of all, save it for buying CCP a round. Don't let Oveur get all the beer, like he almost did the last time ![Laughing](/images/icon_lol.gif)

For reference, the current US exchange rate to Icelandic Kronas (ISK) is roughtly 1 UD to 71 ISK.
So, a Pizza at Pizza hut is $23 (which is high) and a beer run $7 (normal for a metro city area bar).
You can simple search on Yahoo for *insert your currency* to ISK conversion and it will give you the current rate.

Edited by: Dillon Arklight on 27/12/2006 18:56:54 you can expect o pay about 5 pound per pint in the Nordica bar , which i was told is the most expensive on Iceland. Luckily CCP did put open their own bar in the hotel so things werent too bad. The Pizza Hut at the Nordica did have a meal deal for about 15 pound you got all you can eat buffet and a pint of beer. Not too bad but moving down to town you will find better deals. If you get the chance try to fit in a Icelandic tour for about 60 pounds. It lasts about 6 hours and is well worth it. If your budgeting then a minimum of 100 pound per day isnt too far off if you plan to stay mainly around the fanfest area. Even if the FanFest isnt at the Nordica this year(i hope it is) then its the best hotel in Iceland and so well worth the extra money.
Remember also to make sure your in-game wallet is healthy as last year there was a Isk poker game which can be expensive. If you dont have the Isk make sure you have a wealthy corp mate at the Fanfest to lend you the isk( o/ Enslaver). I didnt play this year but i look forward to next year. See you there.

Kieron will announce that the FanFest will be held late the year.
Then there'll be a couple of months weithout any info. The most accurate data will be available from Icelandair.
Then suddenly, when the early bird offers run out, there'll be some hectic stuff leading to nothing and a short time before the Fanfest takes place, the date will be finalized with FanFest packages (without FanFest ticket!) bing available. It will be to late for grabbing cheap accomodation because there are a couple of festivals and cultural events at the same time. ![Razz](/images/icon_razz.gif)
If you plan for mid to end of november you'll probably be probably on spot.
Flights aren't really cheap for most people. --*=*=*--

I went to this years fanfest on Iceland and it was fantastic!
The fanfest went smooth, and was great, but the planning was little more problematic. And It was not really CCPs fault either, but their partner "Icelandair" who was pretty late bringing up the FF packet prices, so many packets where not ready untill October.. Which is very late. Many of us have jobs, and the aircraft seats fills up fast since after all theres quite a few people who DO reserve seats to foreign countries more then 1 month in advance. So what I did was to book my FF ticket in July, and as soon the dates got confirmed and we saw a delay in the release of the packet informations, I ordered my airticket and hotel room independently. I knew where to go and what hotel to stay at, so I got a room at the convention hotel (when many who ordered the packet did not) and a good seat at the aircraft. The negative side of this: I did not get my 100 dollar rebate which ofhters who ordered the packet did.
All in all I think everything went perfect. If CCP can pull Icelandsair nose a little more next year, everything will be bloody fantastic! (NOT saying it was ofcource in 2006)
I had a perfect time in Reykjavik.

The price for flight and hotel from Icelandair have been fixed since febuary when the FanFest package (without finalized date from ccp!) got offered after ccp announced the FanFest to be separated from Airwaves Festival. The price didn't change all year long (short of the early bird offer running out before ccp finalized the date).
The FanFest package was set to a fixed weekend without a chance for a refund. If ccp had decided to move the FanFest to another weekend, many players would have been Really MiffedÖ.
At least we got updates from the various game conventions all over the world in form of DevBlogs normally with many beer drinking events. --*=*=*--

What I know is that the packages offered from the community/fanfest page for Norway was never brought up untill aprox. 1 month before the fest. Maybe It was ready in February, but afaik it was not published either on eve online or icelandair. I know, I checked icelandairs page frquently. But no matter. Everything went ok in the end did it not? I had great fun, and so did everyone else from the look of it!
And yes. Dont take a taxi from the airport! First of all its expensive! Secondly the flybus lines up outside the airport and takes you into the city! I also asked if the driver could take me to the hotel, and so the driver did after the obligatory stop at the busterminal. He drove by all the hotels where people stayed at, or he helped with bus exchange at the bus terminal. All in all, arriving in Iceland was very smooth indeed!
I can promise you one thing, a stay in Iceland is great! Fanfest or not - Iceland is well worth visiting!

Sssshhh Don't tell them ot the rooms will be more expensive next year!
ccp knows how to throw a party, and Icelandic people generally are really helpful and friendly. The isle is definately worth a visit for people loving a good party on a weekend - and for visiting the isle with all the ice, rocks, volcanoes and sea all over. Cheap is different though.
The German Icelandair site had the package listed from may or june, maybe even earlier.
I think the Norwegian site only added the offer after some people asked for the package. --*=*=*--

Been there Done that Would do it again
Just some notes: - Expensive is subjective, my total came in around $2600(CAN) & I was pinching it hard. - Use the flybus as much as possible. Used it to get to the airport/blue lagoon - Don't drink as much = cheaper trip. The locals seem to drink like fish. - Go with atleast one buddy = cheaper room & board - Food is pricey, but stfu and enjoy the culture. - Walk around. There is lots of foot paths. I was able to walk to City Centre in about 30 minutes from the coast line path. - If english is your primary language do not use 'lingo'. The Icelanders aren't down with it, na mean'? - Don't use a debit card, cash or credit only. - Buy atleast 1 dev beer for brownie points when you submit your resume for a job. I am looking at relocating to Iceland for atleast a year or two. That's how much this place rocked. - Don't hit on dev's GF & or wife - Attempt to take in the sights & thermal pools.

Couple of questions...
Roughly what percentage of the icelandic population speak english? Can I speak english over there freely or will I have to wing it with a phrase book, looking like an arse? ![Razz](/images/icon_razz.gif)
How is the Nordica in you experience, and how far is it from the airport?
Oh, and finally... the most important questions...
When I kick Oveur in the nuts for calling me a bastard live on Eve-TV, how much do I gotta pay say, 10 or 12 of you guys to generally get in his way and distract him with beer while I make a getaway to avoid being totally mutilated?
I'll pay in ISK and beer. ![Very Happy](/images/icon_biggrin.gif) ![Laughing](/images/icon_lol.gif)

1) Every local I spoke to did, even if it was fragmented. Their TV was mostly in english which leads me to believe everybody speaks it but enjoy talking crap about the tourists. ![Laughing](/images/icon_lol.gif) 2) The Nordica I found was too high class for the 'clients' of EvE. It's 4/5 star and very very VERY expensive. We got there a day early and felt out of place wearing t-shirts & jeans. After the nerds invaded on Thursday it was home sweat home. That lobby got trashed. 3) They hired **** SS security guards, I would seriously not mess with anybody there. Like the titans of RL... 4) Oveur is a noob Retired [ISSN] Watch Skool of Harpy - Da Blarpy today! |

1. From m my experience both young and old can speak english. I chatted with some locals during my stay and had no probs at all. So I think iceland put as much weight in learning english as we norwegians do: pretty good. But then, Iceland and Norway are pretty much alike.
Hotel Nordica is a fantastic hotel. Its a four star hotel dressed in a minimalistic style. The service are quite good and with nice staff. The restaurant have a fantastic breakfast, but the dinners are just too "nice" for me. The food on the platter is too scarce and the prices too high. Service is as I allready mentioned fantastic, but it does not help a poor hungry man when you go out just as hungry as when you went in. The food I got served where great! But as so many other elite restaurants they want the dinners to be rather a piece of art then stomach fill! And for a hungry Norwegian it did not satisfy my hunger And to a price of like 13000 isk i decided to skip the art and go for a real dinner: PIZZA!!! Pizza Hut also keeps house in the same building, just around the corner. I paid like 3900 isk for a large self componed pizza. Little expensive, but great pizza :)
The bree prices are like 700 isk in the ordinary bar at the hotel. However, CCP being cool as they are, got their own bar, which served beer to aprox half the price! At least they did so this year! So like 450 isk or so for a beer. Not too bad for one of the most expensive countries in the world (My home country, Norway, is ranked as nr 2...)
i cant help you to get away from Oveur though ![Razz](/images/icon_razz.gif)

Nah, thats the prices in dollars is it not?
Was reading this thread and firing numbers into a currency converter, and got about ú3.60 for a beer, and ú12.10 for a pizza, which tbh, is way cheaper than London. ![Very Happy](/images/icon_biggrin.gif)
Very tempting actually, thought it would be more, might look into going if thats the prices.
