An Error Occured [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Timeout expired
Looks familiar? Yeah it kinda sucks I know, been batteling with it for a while now - and I may have had a breakthrough
My agent handed over a nice 'Database Auxiliary Thrusters II' rig BPO, which made the DB run a lil bit faster, the only downside is that he most likely wants me to pay for it (so more about that later if this is shown to be a success).
So for those who wants to evaluate it head here. Before you come screaming damn it is slow, yes it is a bit slow, but so far I have not received a single timeout even though even the simpliest queries take a few seconds.
Let me know your results, thanks.

Awesome job, thanks so much for all your time and effort!

Edited by: Jim McGregor on 27/12/2006 17:28:32 Great to finally have a search thats working! Its not that slow, perfectly OK if you use tabs and just keep browsing somewhere else while waiting. :)
Now for some bugs:
- Search results categories (like Ships & Modules section) comes up several times in the result.
Now for some feature requests:
- Original post search (only match a word/sentence if its in the original post of a thread) - Thread title search (only searches thread titles for results) - Regular expression search support (would allow for some very nice filtering of results) - Poster search (match if thread is posted by a specific poster)
Ok, cool, that will keep you busy until x-mas 2007....

Not sure what you mean by that bug, does it list the same thread twice? It shows the category every time a thread is found in a new category. Eg if the first result is in ships & modules it says so, if the 2nd record is in general it will say general above, now if the 3rd is from ships & modules as well it will say so again since it went from general discussion to ships & mods.
As for the features, most of them are already there, at least in the v3 of the engine, wasn't aware of anyone actually using them so I removed those features (could be implemented again).
v4 implemented searches: keyword - normal search, finds posts with the words searched for author:"Author name" / author:"Author name" keyword - will search for posts with the autor, with or without wanted keywords dev:keyword - finds posts containing the keyword and is posted by a dev/gm/isd member (use dev: infront of all words needed to match a dev)

Exacly, it doesnt list the same thread twice, but it lists the category several times with different threads. Wouldnt it be better to display each category only once, and then have all the results under it? If its possible to do...

Ok, didnt know those existed. I cant seem to find a link to it on eve-search either... maybe you could add a link to some page where the commands are explained? Would be perfect.
And thanks again for your work Chribba. :)

Yes that is possible to do, the reason I chose to display it the current way is because many users want their result sorted by date, and displaying each result under their own category would force users to check each category to see which date comes first.

That reminds me, could you add a listbox with sorting options too? I know im asking a lot here, and you dont have to listen to me, just wanted to put it out there. :)

Very good upgrade Chribba.
Usually it uses to work for me by repeating the same search a 2nd time (this has to do with SQL query cache which is in memory the 2nd time and therefore can proceed to the results faster and not time out on it).
Some tweaks you could try: - adding an user ID to your connection string (this actually DOES make alot of difference in terms of speed!). - pull IO and other sql based logs to an different drive then where the database is located on. - if possible optimise query strings (do not run 5 different sql calls but instead make them one single SQL string command, MAYOR speed difference in this). - on search query's try minimiseing searches / sorts on textstring fields
Database wise optimisations: - if not allready done so convert your "free size" text fields (blob / textstring) fields to an forced value (varchar of 5000, for the posts itself as example), but make sure any and all textfields are set to an size otherwise if it finds one free size textfield it will convert all back to blob / textstring. - enable cacheing for select query's with an max of X parameters (otherwise your memory will soon be clogged up duo to the enormous ammount of query's it tries to put in memory), taken this is not allready done so. - Optimise key's / indexes to make searches faster (do not just apply indexes to all fields though ) - Do alot of checks on your SQL syntax and make sure every field or at least as many as possible return optimised parameters (useing explain query) - Avoid functions within an SQL query, they are slowing down your query result processing when sorting considerably *see example
* WHERE SUBSTRING(lastname,1,1) = 'm' can be rewritten like this: WHERE lastname LIKE 'm%'
Server wise optimisations: - Make use of replication (very complicated and took me an very long time to get to work properly with an 4 server database). - Make use of procedures, stored procedures and remote procedure calls where possible in SQL because they are consideraly faster.
Also on a side note, did you try the hard disk optimisation i suggested in this topic?
