Uhm, is that actually working as intended?
I blame myself for being ignorant on the situation, I started up a second account to haul & consolidate my junk around the universe... and she just got suicide ganked a brutix in Urlen, all in all lost about 300m in faction mods + 2x T2 Frigs.
I hadn't the slightest idea that it was possible.
Not angry at the guy who blew me up, angry mostly at myself, and dissapointed in ccp for making it possible.
Nothing like moving your T2 BPO to your high security research area for it to be blown up by some suicide ganker.
So now I'm just going to sell the alt, all I wanted her for was transportation in High-Sec. ________________________________________________ Login Speed: |

Edited by: Dark Shikari on 27/12/2006 20:36:50 Been around since the first days of EVE. Its gotten harder and harder as CONCORD was boosted, but its always been quite possible.
High security space is "safer," not "completely safe." If CCP ever made it so that someone could haul 5 billion worth in a tech 1 industrial without bothering to even equip it with shield extenders or armor plates and be safe, they would be betraying the basic values EVE is based on.
Its Darwinism. Adapt.

You did fly a fully tanked battleship, yes? Or a covert ops ship? And have friends scout gates for you?
All three are paltry investments to protect an item worth billions.

If you want a higher degree of safety use a freighter, I'm not aware any of them have been high sec ganked unless you've got someone with a real vendetta against your name.
Highsec ganks are old news as the other posters above me state, nothing against the game mechanics, read the forums, inform yourself, take relevant precautions next time such as:
Not going afk Using a tanked hauler Upgrading to a t2 hauler or freighter ---

I agree with you guys on all points, completely my fault. Just not sure if it's something that's working as intended. I suppose so.
Since I was going to use the character as an afk hauler to consolidate, just going to sell her off now. =\

Scout doesn't help.
Protection doesn't work. Best outcome would be that they can grab the can faster than the ganker's alt or buddy (unlikely).
The only way is to use something really tanked hard - possibly passive so the visual effects don't make you look suspicious.
Freighters, blockade runners and transports can be pretty tough to ***** open.
CovOps normally wont help as there is to much going on around the gates for being able to cloak. And they're normally paperthin. --*=*=*--

If your scouts are blind and don't think that pack of caracals with oddly named characters, sitting at the gate, is a possible threat..
Originally by: Tachy Protection doesn't work. Best outcome would be that they can grab the can faster than the ganker's alt or buddy (unlikely).
Best outcome is you laugh at the idiots losing their ships while your friends pump shield/armor/etc. into your ship remotely. If you're worried about your opponent scooping your can, your protection has already failed.
Originally by: Tachy The only way is to use something really tanked hard - possibly passive so the visual effects don't make you look suspicious.
No visual effects to worry about. Why have your shield booster active until you see targets locking/actual damage? Please tell me you're not flying AFK.
Originally by: Tachy Freighters, blockade runners and transports can be pretty tough to ***** open.
Quite! The fact is though, a well tanked BS or even a well tanked cruiser will prevent you from suffering loss at the hands of the majority of suicide gankers.
I still fail to grasp why people would move their entire life savings and/or a T2 bpo worth billions, through space in a cheap 500k ship. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. One can argue "LOL INDUSTRIAL!" I suppose, but show me the bank that carts around its money in a standard tractor trailer.
Quote: CovOps normally wont help as there is to much going on around the gates for being able to cloak. And they're normally paperthin.
In Jita, perhaps. If you take a T2 bpo through Jita, you deserve what you get.

Cov ops work great, esp with an istab in lows (faster align while recloaking). Freighters work great - concord will own the attackers b4 they can kill it. t2 hauler with lows full of wcs / istab/ nano (who needs cargo expanders) will beat most, if not all high sec gate ganks.
dont use autopilot when hauling expensive loot. warp to 0 for gates, dock for stations ..

Edited by: Argenton Sayvers on 27/12/2006 21:33:20 Suiciding someone is nigh impossible. My couriers regularly fly billions of ISK trough space. Of course, afk, since eve is all about maximising afk time on several accounts. Only ever lost one shipment, and that was transporting a pirate implant in a shuttle.
If you want godmode, get a NPC corp freighter pilot. It would take half of BoB to seriously hurt you...
And for the record, i know people who farm suicide gankers for their t2 loot when they are bored.

Interceptors aren't ideal for this job, and as long as people keep thinking they are, people with triple sensor boosted thrashers will keep one-volleying them before they can jump at busy gates. Covops are still better, but not ideal. Fully tanked battleships are the way to go.

How about not announcing to the universe what you will be carrying? those who ganked know exactly what you have, you wouldn't think they would do the same to an alt in a shuttle using warp to 0?

The last couple of 'professional' HiSec ganks I've seen have been done by BS and BC with smartbombs. Caracals normally get popped quickly by Concord and their missiles wont hit once the cruiser's gone.
You wont know that you're the target until your shield starts dropping quickly. Shuttles, frigs and most industrials just go poof. Cans survive because smartbombs do not hit them for some weird reason (at least they didn't when I fitted a SB last time).
At least all over Minmatar HiSec, the gates are crowded enough with travellers and NPC to make the cloak a gamble. --*=*=*--

My hauling alt either uses a freighter or fully tanked HAC to move items worth suidiciding.
If its just high-sec hauling I then AFK it.

and they don't have much timeso usually a few shield add geatly to your safety: it is more interesting to just have a lot of def rather than repair/recharge as there's only very few volleys possible until concords rushes in

Edited by: Big Al on 27/12/2006 22:05:57 If you want to afk it- freighter, plated up bs, resisted up commandship/hac. Inties/cov ops can work too, but then you risk the 1:10000 shot that someone gets ****ed off with high sec life and is sitting at the kisogo gate going -10 by suiciding his smartbombing battleship into the largest group of people he can find - popping your Hulk BPO in the process.
Moving lots of stuff that might be worth 300-400m? Invest in an transport ship. While not immune to suicide ganks you can get a pretty mean tank on them. You would need multiple BS to take them out at a high sec gate.
You shouldn't be afking stuff worth potentially billions. With enough HP to eat 3-4 vollies of smartbombs there is really nothing that should be able kill you.

a T2 BPO is valuable, you shouldn't transport it in a weak ship.
I also have to guess your faction mods and stuff were in a weak ship? I mean when you're bringing around over 400 million in loot and ships you should be able to afford a high end hauler with proper fittings at least.
Try some shield HP mods when transporting very-valuables in high sec. A tech 2 shield extender is like 3000 HP with skills, 2 of those and I bet its enough for CONCORD to wtfpwn them if there are any less than 4 ships
also it sounds like you didn't warp to 0, so you were on autopilot with valuable goods. thats just not very smart.
CCP should NOT change it. Im not a pirate but there are neccessary evils in EVE-online. Pirating, scamming, backstabbing, suicide ganking, they might seem bad but they add color to the universe. Next time have some fun and build a "heavy" hauler I know I had a blast building mine, and if any gang of sucide gankers can blow it up before CONCORD gets them all then they deserve what's in it.

The recent HP boost made it alot easier to tank a hauler, a badger mk2 for example fits 3 medium shield extenders and 2 invul fields and a passive em hardener. Giving you atleast 50% overal resitance and around 3k shields.
A normal hauler will always go down to a dedicated team, just never go afk when hauling important stuff.

Yes they SHOULD change it.
I agree no place should be 100% safe but as it stands game mechanics favor the ganker in ways that are absurd.
- There should be a way for a pilot to know they are being cargo/mod scanned. Whether they need to fit a module that would tell them this or just as a matter of course is open for discussion but there should be a way.
- Some way (I am not sure what) to deal with busy gates/lag issues where even if you are being on the ball and flying as you should you could still get whacked by a smartbombing maniac. (Note: Not all lag happens in Jita and places like it...I get lagged at gates occasionally where there are 12 people in my system and 7 in the next [no idea whay but it happens occasionally]).
- There should be no ship insurance payout for getting CONCORDED. Perhaps one payout per month (maybe) to allow for the occasional screwup but beyond that if the police bust you you should not profit from it via a game mechanic.
Only AFK hauling in Hi Sec that is nearly 100% safe is via a Freighter. IIRC it would take a minimum of 12 Ravens to drop one before they all get Concorded (I have seen different math on this but this seemed the minimum, might need more). Also, unless something has changed that I missed Freighters do not drop loot when popped so no one would currently bother anyway unless they just really, really hated you.

In the KDB this is mentioned and CCP does worn players for it! Check this article of the KDB and you will see: http://kb.eve-online.com/Pages/KB/Article.aspx?id=173
So you better read some more about the game.
Empire pirates are cunning! More sneaky than your local 0.0 kill evrything that moves pirate. If you want to do some AFK empire hauling use 2 things: 1 slam alot of shield extenders on ur hauler, enough to stand for concord to come to your aid. 2 use containers to trainsport ur **** in, that way cargo scanners cant see whats in the containers. You also get a bonus, becouse cans use like 3000m3 and they can fit 3900m3 so thats 900m3 for free for evry can.
If i have to move some realy realy expensive stuff i modd a megathron with 7 cargo extenders. That should give you about 2500m3 or more. Plenty for some BPO's and T2 weapons. They wont bring that dont intime before concord comes to its aid.

Personally I found a stabber with 3 LSE2 and 3 nanos rather nice there. About 10k shields, over 400 m¦ cargoroom an 400-500 m/s. Does AFK runs almost as fast as an inty and you'll prolly need at least 3 suicide ravens to ***** that nut.

Cargo scanning can see inside of containers. Locked containers unlock when dropped from your ship too.

?? Thats wrong. People won't waste the 15min agro reset on killing an inty that MIGHT contain a bpo. Now if the inty is on autopilot than yes the 5 second odd time to cycle the cargo scanner while the inty is travelling the 15km to the gate will certainly be done in time but most people moving bpo's (i am assuming we are talking about the movement on T2 bpo) don't travel on auto-pilot so therefore there is no time to scan the cargo and destroy. --------

I know it may sound like blasphemey, but if you turn on your audio, the cargo scanners make a very distinct sound.
