Edited by: Kua on 28/12/2006 16:29:34 Edited by: Kua on 28/12/2006 16:26:36 Hi, I hope this thread is in the right place.
Like others my game can get laggy, e.g. it might take 10 seconds for the market window to appear in an almost empty system. Also I would say my graphics aren't as good as they perhaps should be, especially when I compare them to some videos of in-game footage from other players.
I would suggest my PC setup is decent if not top of the line. I'm a little worried that my 2mbps Tiscali connection seriously effects performance though. I just noticed I can get 8mbps for only ú3 extra a month, would that improve things a lot? (actually I just noticed BT is doing an 8meg connection for 6 months for only ú10 :o) I'm afraid I really don't know how it works.
Here is (I think :p) the relevant section of my dxdiag:
Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519) Language: English (Regional Setting: English) System Manufacturer: AWARD_ System Model: AWRDACPI BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz (2 CPUs) Memory: 1024MB RAM Page File: 556MB used, 1905MB available Windows Dir: C:\WINDOWS DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904) DX Setup Parameters: Not found DxDiag Version: 5.03.2600.2180 32bit Unicode
Is there anything I could do to seriously improve things?
Thank you in advance. :)

Edited by: Baleorg on 28/12/2006 16:54:03 you forgot to mention your connection speed, and how you connect.
dialup, router (which one) ? also, try setting your exefile cpu affirnity thingy to 1 cpu (rightclick the file, propertys, somewhere you find the option to set to single cpu). maybe thats enough to get you fixed

I couldn't find that option.
Um I think I don't think I have a router . So I guess it's dial up - but I thought that was different from broadband .
I did mention the connection speed as 2mbps.

2mbs.. that snot realyl dialup. perhaps you got dsl.
hmm i dotn have a dualcore based cpu, but i know you either need to rightclick the exefile.exe (or eve.exe) and check somewhere, or perhaps when the client is runnign try rightclicking that tab in your taskbar :)

did you by any chance upgrade your HARDWAE without reinstalling windows? since you have more than 1 CPU, you should have some Options "somewhere", if not then you might need the motherboard driver. well, here is the explanation anyway for that dualcore thing :-P
CTRL+ALT+DEL
Processes tab
Right click each Eve (probably called ExeFile.exe): set affinity to cpu 0

Yes I did upgrade my hardware without restoring windows. I have only just seen in the dxdiag that it says 2 CPUs. Are you saying this is bad?
I don't know what I've done but for the first time today clicking ctrl+alt+del doesnt bring up the usual menu (or whatever it is).
When I right click eve.exe or my computer and select properties I can't find anything about teh cpu affinity or any option to change it. BTW should it be changed to 1 or 0? You mention both in different posts.

I can state it NOT an afinity problem. People have got that on their minds currently but it makes diddly squat difference for most people and the problem that it was to get around was fixed 2 patches ago. Windows sets afinity up to provide the best responcivness of the program and in general it does not need to be touched.
As for slow market. Depends what system you are in. The market is read from the servers and if you are in a heavily loaded system like Jita then pulling up details will take a while. Move to a less laggy system (notice, I did not say less populated as some unpopulated systems lag because they share a node with a laggy system) and try again. On my setup in a lagless system it takes 2-4s to display the market details.
Tiscali are also not the best ISP there is, they have had thier fair share of problems with higher data flow than they can handle and this causes ISP lag that you can only get around by swapping ISP's.
A few things you can try first though. Scan your PC for virus's and spyware. Remove any you find as some spyware can eat up all your internet bandwidth trying to send spam email on behalf of someone else.

0 i guess.. some malware things stop allowing ctrl-alt-delete to bring up the taskmanager (or more precise, they stop allowing running taskmgr.exe) nto to shock you though
upgrading hardware (like motherboard) without reinstalling widnows can cause some loss of performance. vidcards or adding mroe ram doesnt count as "you need to reinstall" hmm, market.. yes right. takes a bit depending where youre, since it polls a lot of data before showing. how much fps do you get when flying around and doing stuff? (ctrl-f to bring fpsmeter)

NVIDIA GeForce 6200: I thought that was pretty decent but on checking the Technology Lab (sorry I should have posted this there, but didn't realise it existed) apparently anything less than a 7900 is pants. :(
Did I clear the cache? Not sure what you mean. The cache for EVE?
And 'task manager' isn't greyed out, but it won't appear on left click.
Thank you for the assistance BTW.

Edited by: Baleorg on 29/12/2006 02:56:22 ye, thats what i try to do all the time
yes, the cache for eve its evefolder\cache\machonet\*.* evefolder\cache\browser\img\*.* or basically everything inside except evefolder\cache\prefs.ini evefolder\cache\settings\*.* evefolder\cache\browser\*.txt
you can use a cachecleaner, i use the one below my signature, althoguth you should still clear evefolder\cache\browser\img\*.* to be sure its not the jpgs, there was an issue with them.
If you hit ctrl-alt-delete you get the little "popup" including the taskmanager option? no taskmanager if you hit that, too? hmm, you should run an MalWare-Scanner to be somewhat safe its nothing that blocks things like taskmanager, thats one thing that worries me a bit atm.
you also could try to disable effects for a sec (ctrl-alt-shift-t and e) and sound to see if that does something. you using fullscreen or window mode? try switchign the mode using alt-enter ingame

naaa. even with 56k you can play nicely after yuo managed to login, eeve doesnt have that much traffic when doing "normal stuff" like flying around and such, mroe databurst come when you open the market or warpin to some huge spawn, fields, etc

I did have ad-awarwe, but I'm not very good at looking aftaer my computer. Thank you for reminding me to run it again. It's finding a lot of stuff. I'm not very good at interpreting the results, but I do delete everything it finds (unless I need it).
So a better connection speed means it would take less time to load things that need a lot of data like the market or a fleet of ships?
Also any thoughts about my videocard?

vidcard should not really be an issue, lots of stuff finding you say? you prohably use internetexplorer (oh dear, dont do :-P ) and it just finds a lot of datacookies
i coudl take a look at your pc via remote access, but so serious is your problem so far not :-P tried the disabling sound/effects yet? did you finaly clear the cache in the mentioned folders?

Edited by: Kua on 29/12/2006 14:15:10 Edited by: Kua on 29/12/2006 14:14:35 :p I don't use internet explorer but this PC has a few other users who do. I dl'ed EVE launcher but I'm a little confused as to how to use it. My client nick isn't neccessarily my char nick is it? It's what I use to log in with right? Also do I just enter my client nick, find the EVE directory then click "clear cache" and I'm done?

clientnick.. "accountname" != character name(s)
ahh.. i see, didnt started evelauncher for a time.. clientnick, enter somethign like "eve" its regardless its for you its when you use mroe than 1 client, you can manage over there clientdircetory, point to the clietndirectory (easy hu) and then hit clear cache, DONT hit clear settings you still want to manually kill contents of yourevefolder\cache\browser\img\*.*
