Edit: had a well written reply. Going into detail costs, engineering, and how one off production of custom built models is no different than five hundred if the overall labour involved is the same. Level of detail, design means complex multipiece casting that would be labour intensive, etc.
Sorry. I had a lot more, it errored on post or something, think I hit back and post by accident. But overall, I think the price is in the manufacturing, the electronics of it wouldn't be much. Make more, the cost is less, they just have 500 people to cover probably 10+ k just to make the molds?
They probably only think they can sell 500, hence the down payment. the initial investment is so high, they want to see if it is even feasable. If eve was a 1mil plus player base, bet they would make more and cost less. Example their halo things. It is all big name productions in their list, then eve.

It's around the same cost as Forgeworld charge for a Warlord Titan, which doesn't levitate or come with any working electronics.
Post on the Eve-o forums with a Goonswarm Federation character that drinking bleach is bad for you, and 20 forum warriors will hospitalise themselves trying to prove you wrong.

I'm very disappointed in the Eve playerbase that nobody has bought all 500 and relisted them for double yet.
