I don't get what all the hate is for. CCP does this every year because they're cool and it's a nice sentiment that goes well with the holiday times and is a nice, pleasant surprise for players.
Granted, people complain a lot sometimes, but generally it's a nice thing. People aren't "entitled" for expecting something that happens routinely to happen again. Oh, some of the things people want are a little out there, but kids having wishlists for Santa isn't something that just started with this latest "self-entitlement" generation.
Personally, I like small and practical things, and I like story driving things (like the Echelon ship or the solar sailer.) So things like the Minmatar warp 20 AU/sec (which I somehow didn't get...) or those story driving ships are what I think make cool gifts. So like a pilotable Drone that could sneak around Drifter sites without getting shot at (could take some pretty sweet pictures) and just carried a probe launcher would fit in with the current story, but really whatever novelty thing they send out this year will be cool. They generally are.
I even have that pile of "junk" in one of my backuphangers somewhere. I WOULD have liked the items to have more information on what they came from for those of us that don't follow the out of game meta that much (I know it was commemoration of various things that happened during the year, but I have no idea what any of those things were or who they were named after...not all of us can make it to Iceland for the big fan conventions. :)
Anyway, it's all good. Why so much hate? Just let people have fun and dream.
