I have been asked to fix a friends laptop for them after their Windows XP install got quite messed up. After formatting and reinstalling the OS however, there are a number of hardware devices in Device Manager that don't have drivers. Now the laptop had no driver CD, nor any hidden partition, and I've exhausted Google, Driverguide and the manufacturer's web site trying to find them. Truth is I just can't tell what anything in the damned machine is to get the right drivers for it. I am hoping a faint hope that something may exist to help me out though I very much doubt it does, but wanted to ask anyway, see if anyone here knows of such a thing. Is there any program, paid for or not, that might be able to identify hardware devices? I wouldn't know where to begin opening the laptop up, nor fancy my chances at even doing that (it's one of those all-weather, all-terrain, lob it onto concrete type machines). If anyone knows of anything that could help any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

try out pcservicecall
under pc support you can select a laptop and view original hardware.....
hopefully it will be listed!!!

SiSoft Sandra propably on the Windows side; any Linux installation (live-cd's included) with pciutils installed; just type "lspci" in a terminal and you'll get output like this:

Driver Wizard was usefull getting device drivers, just install it onto the pc/laptop (its a free software too) and set it going, it gives u full hardware plus where the drivers are available from (with links) u can even save the findings to a disk and put it on ur working pc to download the drivers to copy over.

Yup Everest is probably what your looking for, it lists all the hardware and in most cases it links you to the drivers and manufacturer website.

Wow, I wasn't actually expecting anything so for all these great answers I'm a bit surprised. Many thanks for the wonderful suggestions, will give these a go and see how i get on. I hate having something I can't fix, it's like it's chalenging me, goading me!
