I am working on my dreadnought skills right now. Are they worth to have and is it possible for one player to maintain one?

If you need to shoot POSs or other capital ships yes. If not no.

They are essential tools if your corp/alliance holds or wants to take 0.0 space as the only thing they are good for is shooting POS's or stations.
Other than that there are many much much cheaper ships that will do things like mine, haul, rat, run missions that can use jump gates .

No, they can not use deadspace gates and are not useful for ratting or missions.

Like others of said if you plan on joining a corp or alliance that is going to be shooting POS's or other capitals then go for it.
But if you aren't there other ships that are far better suited to pvping/npcing/mining 
One option is to train the skills that will aid you IE BS lvl 5, Nav lvl 5 WDO lvl 5 and any gunnery or missiles skills, then you are setup if in the future you decide to go for a dread.

For anyone who says that Dreads are POS seiging, then they don't know what they are talking about. Snigg has used dreads to blow up numerous BSes and BCs in fleet battles that had nothing to do with POSs. If you don't believe me look through their KB.

dreads are good for more than just pos sieges.. if they're of the moros class that is. I've seen my friends in IAC do some pretty amazingly creative sh!t with em 
However, I still think EvE needs more and better tactical warning sounds.

You could always park one next to a station, shoot occasionally targets who are unprepared for you, and feel uber in your (almost) unkillable ship.
