I was just curious as to the community's views were as to the all around best ship and loadout is for an exploration vessel. I imagine someone with some speed on it yet a decent sized hold- Opinions?

Edited by: Mnengli Noiliffe on 01/01/2007 07:33:09 There is only one alternative, a covert ops vessel with two Gravity Capacitor Upgrades. Unless you like to wait 50% longer for your scan results of course. The one with biggest cargo is the Cheetah. Though it's neglible anyway so I'd recommend an alt in a sigil filled with probes.

What are everyone's thoughts on the Caldari and Gallente versions of the Covert Ops ships?

Buy the one that looks the coolest. Done.

Rifter, Condor, Thorax, Exequror, Jaguar
Something fast, and if you want to loot stuff, go with the exeq.

You'd come off as more " " if you maybe suggested an expensive ship with a high slot for a probe launcher.

I'm using a buzzard atm, I can fit:
Hi:
Covert ops cloak Scan Probe Launcher Salvager
Med:
1mn ab Analyzer Codebreaker
Lows: Warp Core Stab Inertial Stab
2x Gravity scan rig (must have, scan time reduction is so nice)
Could fit some more stuff if I had cpu, I need cov ops 5. I have never gotten too far from my base (25+ jumps) so cargo space doesnt matter much in my experience. I can hack and do archaelogy stuff, I been happy with this setup so far. My main kills the big mean rats.

Not including the covert ops ships...
The best ship for Exploration is the Probe. Cheap, fast, and big cargo.
Here's what I have on it:
High Probe Launcher, Salvager 1
Mid: Survey Scanner, Shield Extender
Low: Whatever you want.
This setup is cheap, and can haul a ton of probes.

I'm confused about an aspect of exploration and my question ties in somewhat with that asked by the OP:
I don't understand the point of cloaking ones way into dangerous (low-sec) systems and making the effort to discover hidden sites, only to have to bring a more appropriate combat vessel (uncloaked presumably) to clear the site before salvaging, etc.
I haven't explored a single thing yet, as I'm still doing my training, but I'm trying to plan my setup (Cheetah), etc. and was hoping to only need the one ship. Can someone please explain how this side of exploration works? |

I agree. I also doubt that covops ships are the best for exploration! You have to scan in one ship and then bring a second ship to clear the site. This seems a clumsy arrangement.
If you had one ship that did everything it should be more efficient - even if you take longer to scan.
However, I'm a new player and I don't speak from experience.

Covops to find 'em.
Hurricane to exploit 'em...and for "close encounters" encounters along the way .

The thing is that probing takes 600s (yes that is 10minutes) without any skill and not in the right ship. So not counting skills and just buying the right ship will cut it off 40-50% depending if you have lvl 4 or 5 in that skill.. So go ahead and probe with your BC/BS but since it can be a pain to find any site to begin with you want the time to be short...

I use a malediction. Purely for scouting purposes/covering large distances fast, it's great.
High: Prototype cloaker Mid: 1MN MWD Low: Nano/Nano/Nano
A cloaked MWD nano inty with a 13.5AU warp speed? Perfect!
