Hi,
I don't know if anything like this has been done before, but here goes. This is a request that if you are infact a 'real life girl' to sign this post
I'll give you my reasons now way I ask.
Firstly im NOT looking for a e-girlfriend so sadly there will be no need for you all to eve mail me
The main reason I'm asking is because well out of sheer curiosity and interest nothing else. Over the last couple of decades the face of gaming has drastically changed, espicially recently with games like Second Life. Where computers and online games used to be the domain of soley for men more or less( boys toys in all that), but like I said things have changed recently.
I have a six year old daughter who is completely computer game mad and she would play them 24/7 365 if we let her( I play the big meany and make her go and play with conventional toys and play with her sister from time to time ). She knows more about PC's now than I did when I was in scondary school.(understandable though im 31 now).
IMO it won't be long before she'll want to play an online game(this poses problems for obvious reasons)she already asks me a million and one questions about EVE if she see me play it .
I know it is impossible to actually find the true number of how many girls play eve but if you would like to post /me and add a few comments and what you think your views on the future will be concerning women and online games that would be great
I have had many discussions about this at work with my collegues with varying points of view .. oh and for the men out there I wonder if you have the same problem as me I.E. the other half complaining you spend to much time on the computer !! (**** I don't really )

lmao yea that has happened in other MMO's ive played (not with me though )
but seriously do you think that 'girls on games' is a good thing ? IMO yea the more people you get from EVERY walk of life make it all that much better, if I could get my grandma and grandad to play I would !

Yeah, diversity is a good thing, and there definitely are a fair few girls playing. I've run across 10 or 12 who I'm sure are (ie, have spoken to on TS) and a few that claim they are but I can't confirm
Also, one person who claimed to be a girl but was confirmed wasn't, and several others who were suspect

Why?, did you read the whole post ? This has nothing to do with attracting more girls to EVE that will happen anyway as part of the evolution of gaming in general (online particular as more and more women are becoming PC savy).
I would just like to hear some gaming comments(EVE in particular) from a differnt point of view i.e not male.

At a rough count, without thinking too hard I currently know and speak to 9 women who play Eve regularly.
Can think of 5 or 6 offhand who have been in Eve but have since left.

And if you want a game where there's a ton of WOMEN playing, then go play Dark Age of Camelot, literally half the gamers there or a good 40% or so are real women.

Will watch this space to check who to stalk. *silly grin*
Seriously, though, I'm quite sure there are lots of 'em, having been roleplaying as girls for years and the markers of having a guy behind the female avatar are obvious as daylight to me.
The smart ones just won't announce themselves here publicly if they want to avoid harrassment. Even though I'm not a chick myself, having been putting up a rather convincing act, I've had my share of male cling-ons and many variations of "LOL A/S/L?" Annoying as hell.
There are girls who play this, alright. Just not as many as other games that are easier on the mind like WoW, Everquest, et cetera. Hell, the one who dragged me into EVE is a hot redhead Canadian chick. ---------------

I'm a RL women and my husband got me into the game. I found the learning curve pretty steep (and i'm still learning) but I love the game. The guys in my corp are awesome and respectful, couldn't ask for anything more. I've met 3 other RL women in the game and 2 played male characters to avoid being chased around by little boys who act like they've never had contact with a female. Besides the suprise of finding out I'm female, or rather wanting a pic of me, I'm having a nice time playing. So for all the women out there, Yeah for us.

it could also be said that the "uggh.... guuurl" responses from sex-starved males is exactly why most women won't let on about thier gender on mmos. I can't blame 'em.

I think it would be interesting to find out the male/female ratio of EVE players.
It took me ages to realise how many of the women on EVE are actually men. Strangely I was shocked by it at first. Although occasionally it's amusingly obvious - as in the case where someone (won't mention any names) describes his female alt as a "*****ler" in the bio section

Personally, I think in-station gaming (and all it will bring along) will lower the threshold for more women to join eve. Really, atm I find eve to be the definition of nerd-goodness with sci-fi, statistics, analyzers and spreadsheet charts with wild wars to the left and right.

Hey I read some place that there are 95% RL male players and 5% RL female players in EVE. Would be interesting to know how many EVE-female avatars and how many EVE-male avatars there are...
Im a RL woman player and I also prefer the woman to girl. I think one of the reasons ther isnt that many female plyers (yet) is that it is quite diffecult to get in to this game if you havent played a lot of mmo's or computer games before. You need cuite a lot of pre-knowleged to not feel compleatly lost in the beginning! I think the game could benefit with more female players.
But Im curious - do the male players really want more female players? Because to get more, there would properly have to be some changes in the learning curve, since the female gamers dont have the necesery experince of computer games... yet! (hopfully the younger generations will! )

I'm a 23-year old real life EVE-playing woman [/signed on the "woman" not "girl" note], but I don't feel the need to share my main's information.
I had never played video games really [Civilization III, Age of Mythology, Sid Meier's Pirates] before starting in EVE. A now ex-boyfriend was really big on EVE, and made me create an account, do the tutorial, yada yada. I couldn't get over how dumb it was [I'm not big on sci-fi]...til I got hooked.
I must admit I resent the implication made by one poster in this thread that the learning curve needs to be adjusted for female gamers. Reading that felt almost like stepping back into some Medieval biology class talking about women as lesser beings. [If anyone wants a REALLY interesting read, check out Linkage ] . I don't believe in any way that my being female and not having super h4x gaming experience crippled me when learning to play EVE.
Additionally, although it can definitely be amusing to get spontaneous "WHAT was that? Did I just hear a female voice?" or "WHOA" or "Uuuughhhh" or even silence in response to "Hi guys, what's up?" on vent, minimizing those reactions would contribute to a decrease in the feeling like I was some sort of exotic animal in the zoo.
I will say that most of the guys I talk to are respectful of me and seem to get over the fact that I have <gasp> breas*s, although I have encountered a guy who thought it was funny to joke about raping me. After he apologized, I explained exactly why that was not a really funny topic of discussion, and we're fine with each other again. My point in sharing this story is that I believe that for women gamers to become more of a driving force, they are either going to have to learn to deal with perpetual crudeness/sexual innuendo that can sometimes deteriorate to the point where it is offensive, or other players will need to learn that there are some lines that should not be crossed, if not out of respect for the woman they are talking to, then for their mother, grandma, sister, whatever.
Have I gotten free stuff because I'm female? Yes, though I hate to admit it. Do I play to that and try to get the most I can out of people? No. Is it nice to feel like I have 20 or so brothers who will answer questions and not act like I'm some idiot? Yes. Do I sometimes get talked down to like an idiot b/c the person I'm talking to obviously feels like I can't possibly understand the complexity of ship fittings, alliance politics, accounting numbers? Yes. Have I heard the phrase, [insert name here] is the corp chick? Yes. Have I responded, "You know, I also do this little funny trick sometimes...it's called FLYING A SHIP AND PWNING? Yes.
Diversity ftw, and I will say that being in such a vast minority has been an extremely unique learning situation about group dynamics. Sometimes I think everyone needs to remember that part of what makes MMOs so amazing and addictive is the community in which we play.
Lastly, I would like to add that I am by no means tech-savvy. EVE is actually amazing for that...when I have a technology problem, I log in and ask for help with whatever it is in corp/alliance chat. It's fantatic to have so many people around who know what they're talking about on that end!
I think that's about enough from me...Women + Science + Math = Unstoppable.

I'm not talking about sexism or anything (because that's funny), I'm talking about guys acting as if they've never talked to a girl before. I'd be perfectly happy if no girls played Eve because, frankly, gender makes no difference unless you're looking for an e-girlfriend/e-stalker victim.

There are female players in EVE. However, only few, fewer then in other, less PvP oriented MMOGs. If you are looking for female companionship, go to The Sims Online, Second Life, Tale in the Desert, or similar things without fighting. Or WoW, of course.

God, yes. In DAoC, well over half my guild was female. There was a reason for this: In DAoC, armor was armor, and ******* weren't quadruple Z.
Also my male characters in DAoC got more free stuff than my female characters. Man, men had it good. Free stuff without being harassed with, "wil u be my boyfriend?1/11/1/1/1!!!!!!!1111111111eleven"

Okay, two points here,
Have you ever heard the stereotypes: women can't drive, or women can't be engineers/scientists? Well, it's based on the different ways society expects boys and girls to behave. We expect boys to be running around the playground chasing each other and while the girls stand around and talk. Thus, these gender roles continue in different ways, and females end up with stronger communication and social and weaker spatial brain development. And males, vice versa. Easy ways of adjusting for this is to see if there's any sports she might be interested in, letting her play computer games that rely heavily on spatial skill (racing games now, shooters maybe when she's older), letting her watch you/help out when you do mechanical/handyman work, or anything else you might think of. I know plenty of wonderful women who've played sports/videogames (Super smash brothers is a popular one now) from a young age, and they definitely can handle a car and aren't girl-dumb. Eve may train spatial skills, but it depends how you play it.
I know a few females that play Counterstrike competitively and one, professionally. One thing I learned is that women can't have the mental attitude that being a female excuses them for not doing as well. Females play games just as well as males, assuming they put the same amount of focus and time into getting better. Some play games just for the attention, we'll leave those out, but some just make the mistake of letting everyone know she's female. I think for a female to not get too distracted in games, it helps a lot for them to only reveal their gender to those she's trusted. This problem of course, will be obselete as soon as females are no longer treated as rare sights in the games they play.

thing is 90% of my engineering/science classes are men, with the exception of chemistry. In fact our chem lecture teacher said that for those of us going into the sciences he suggest you make friends with girls now because there are not that many later on.
Im not saying they cant be... Im just saying it makes me sad and lonely inside. ------------- Midshipman Lithalnas - Logistics Division - Hadean Drive Yards

The less stereotypically blond women we have replaced by the more intelligent, confident ones, the better.
