Sonic Foundry Vegas Video is good if you're not looking to be a professional video editor.
Adobe Premiere is the next step up, in my opinion.
Avid however is the top of the line professional strength video editting program.

Vegas (as suggested) Premiere, Avid and...
Final Cut Pro on a Power Mac G5 with panther on it!
Bit costly though...:P

To make nice effects and fades in pictures, or make special effects, like everything is in water or fire and many more effects.

"What kind of movie editor do you guys use to make these movies?"
... Might sounds rather silly, but for the simple work the Windows Movie Maker which comes with Windows XP is quite sufficient -- does all common transitions, effects and text/credits stuff. For cleaning and/or processing clips check Virtual Dub as well. o.o;

Edited by: MaiLina KaTar on 30/11/2003 03:55:18 (Adobe Premiere + Adobe Photoshop + Adobe After Effects) * (Good Sound Editor + FRAPS) = Extreme Video Ownage
- Use FRAPS to record ingame stuff.
- Use Premiere to create and cut your videoclips
- Use Photoshop to create frame by frame effects and other cool stuff
- After Effects let¦s you do some really nice effects, too.
Downsides: The programs are expensive. So if you don¦t already own them you should go for the demoversions. You¦ll also need to work yourself into the software if you really want to do it right.
The software described above can of course be replaced by similar software of other brands. These programs are however my choice and I¦ve found all of them to be extremely useful and most of the times fun to work with (I use all of them for work).
The sound editor can be any good wave editor or better stuff. Personally I use Pro Tools since we have an audio studio over here but to simply cut music you can try your luck with Cool Edit 2000 which I¦ve found to be a rather nice PC wave editor. It¦s also pretty modular and you can use tracks to arrange some stuff.
If you¦ve never done this before I suggest you to get some friends and do it together with them. It¦s not only more fun but it speeds you up. Doing all of this alone can take VERY LONG (more than a year) if you do it alone and want to produce anything that doesn¦t look like your cousins wedding video

I'm not a professional but I do lots of videos for functions, weddings, formal grad parties, birthdays, etc. I have been using Premiere w/ TitleDeko and AfterFX. Because my videos have to be playable on a common household DVD player - I use Ulead DVD Movie Factory 2 to make it into whatever playable format I need (DVD, SVCD - etc). Although Premiere gives you a host of options on how to save it for computer / web applications. My personal choice is the real player format or windows media format. But there are other PC formats out there that just are plain better quality like DivX.

Actually that's why I recommended Sonic Foundry's Vegas Video initially. Though apparently Sony has grabbed their software suite.
Vegas Video's learning curve isn't quite as steep at Premiere's. Nor is the software cost versus Premiere. There is a slight sacrifice in capability. But for someone starting out it'll take a while for that person to hit the limitations.
They also produced Sound Forge and Sound Forge Studio, which is an excellent sound editor. With Sound Forge Studio being gear more for entry level sound editting.
