Strange that there is no choice where to distribute your starting skill points.
I think a nice improvement would be the following:
A starting pool of skill points and a limited number of starting skills to which you may distribute those points. Keep mandatory ones as low as possible - ie frigate 1, guns1 or something like that.
A choice from a few presets - Miner, Salvager, Combat pilot, you get the picture.
The lack of character customisation is a real turn off, as this is something I really like about RPG-style games. |

Ah, the legendary harsh forums of Eve Online. You sure told me!
I see they are already charging for tailored skill packages:

It's unfortunate that CCP doesn't allow trial accounts to post anywhere but here, and sometimes we get suggestions or general comments from trial newbies, but mostly we expect and reply to questions about the game and help requests.
Character creation has changed a number of times in the past, and one of the systems they switched AWAY from was exactly what you suggested.
Newbies don't know much about the game, and the fact that you have to buy and train some 160-180 different skills for this game, as opposed to 20-40 different abilities that characters in other MMOs get, is somewhat of a shock. The number of skills is information overload for newbies, and the fact that they have to come up with 5-10 million ISK almost right away, to buy the skillbooks they need, is also somewhat of a shock.
You believe you'd have more choice if given the skillpoints, but in truth you'll have to train the 80-100 support skills anyway, no matter what, because armor, shields, speed, agility, and resists matter even if you're a trader or industrialist, due to the ever-present PVP in this game. So it's not really choice, it's just more expense (having to buy the skill books) and more clicking (having to set them up in the queue to train). |

Being able to train whatever you want (any race, any profession) regardless of your character origin is one of the core principals of EVE. We don't want enforced specialization. We want to be able to choose what to specialize in or even to not specialize at all. What you suggest would either be restrictive (a long slog to change your specialty and train up core skills) or pointless (too few SP to matter anyway).

Hope you can sell the sp to those, I wouldn't mind getting rid of mining 2 and industry 1, ok so not much xp, but I dislike having skills I'll never use. |

If you know you don't need them, then you're not a newbie and shouldn't be posting 'feedback' in this subforum. If you actually are a newbie, then quite frankly you don't know that you don't need them.
Some presets would be nice true, but let's be honest the actual difference between any of the 'packs' would be marginal at best. This is not a class based RPG. 65k SP is nothing; It's what, maybe a day and a half of training? You can still customize to your heart's content, in the actual game, as opposed to some inconsequential choices in the creation screen.

Think I'd have preferred no pre-sets just a blank sheet with a pile of sp to place where I wanted.
Don't have to be an old player to know that you may prefer missiles, doesn't mean you know if they're any good or not. |

The notion you have isn't a bad one in and of itself but this is definitely the first time I've seen someone complaining about free sp in here (ncq&a) .
CCP aren't generally very flexible when it comes to things like sp however they are tabling the notion of you being able to sell sp , there's a dev blog about it and I suggest that you go read it.

As far as being customizeable this game is nearly infinitely customizable. You can train into anything. Further unlike most other MMOs you can participate with veterans on equal ground from day one. Eve is much more about what you know and who you fly with than your skill points. You are coming from a perspective that you have gained playing other MMOs and it just does not apply here. If you can let go of those non-applicable viewpoints you might actually enjoy Eve.
I can't say this enough, Eve is not like other MMOs and you can't play it as if it were. Open your mind and try things out with a fresh perspective and see what happens.
New players don't really understand the game and have a bad habbit of playing Eve as if it were other MMOs and appling skill points in manners that don't work well here. I think that giving them skill points to place where ever they want right off the bat is a bad idea. Regardless of if it is or not you train at somewhere around 45K to 65K skillpoints per day so in the grand scheme of things the amount of skill points that you are arguing about here is insignificant and you even arguing about what you've been given when you have the option to train whatever you want just goes to show how you don't understand the game and need to spend more time learning and less time commenting on things that you don't understand.
Eve combat is much more about match ups and counters than it is about skill points and specialization. In that regard having options is almost always far better than hyper specialization. So with that in mind you thinking that those 66K skill points are wasted just again goes to show how limited your understanding of this game is.
I typically recommend that newer players and especially trials train up lots of different ship and weapon types as well as professional choices and try everything. So in that case training all racial frigates and weapons skills to level 3 so that you can try them all out is a good practice and again in the grand scheme of things very little time.
If you could do me a little favor here, if you do stick with Eve I would love it if you could come back here after playing for a while maybe in like a year or so. Then comment on what you think of this thread or how your opinions have changed. If the thread gets locked by that time just send me an in game mail.
I can almost guarantee that a year from now you will get a little chuckle at what you are posting now.

Having to choose from a number of presets might make new players believe that there is some sort of "class" mechanic and that they would need to re-roll a new character if they wanted to try a different aspect of the game.
To a certain degree we already have that with the races and I've heard of several newbros who thought they had to create a new character because their friends were from a different "faction" or because they wanted to try out ships from another race. |

A while back CCP changed the prerequisites for capital ships to not require a whole slew of skills to be trained to 5 (instead, trained to 4). Millions of skillpoints, now "useless." Now they're revamping capitals, even more points "useless."
You're trying to create a "perfect" character, and you should try to avoid that kind of thinking. I'm going to log in tonight and place a bounty on your head, to "ruin" your perfect character, not because I'm mean, but because it's better to be ruined now than 6 months in when you already have some 10 million skillpoints. You can lose the perfection for any number of mistakes, pressing the wrong button in high-sec, annoying the wrong person, joining the wrong corp, doing the wrong scam... Something's going to happen, and if you're complaining about a couple skills and a couple thousand skillpoints, this game may not be for you. |

The kind of fine tuning of a character that you seem to be indicating here has no place in Eve. No one in this game is "all level 5" and the eveiseasy youtube channel proves that you can be successful at solo PvP on a days old character if you know what you are doing.
So just relax, skill some stuff up, and play around with the game and have some fun. Also if you play this game for years and never use small hybrid turrets then you are playing the game wrong. Let go of your OCD and embrace: options, balance and the middle road. |
