I've heard that some people use Small T2 blasters on a Thorax instead of medium blasters as you can fit a 1600 plate.
What experience have people had with these two approaches in PvP?

If you have decent gunnery skills (3mil+) then I'd recommend you try uot a thorax with either 5 T2 small neutrons, or 5 T2 150s.
Because you can tank the living bejesus out of it, and the small guns with their tracking, RoF etc seem todo just as much DPS as the medium, even without getting the bonus to medium rails/blasters the thorax gets 
If you go that route you can also have 2 medium T2 NOS and 3 small guns, and you still have the drones. I'd recommend skilling well up for T2 medium drones if you add in the NOS.
Its funny, I've also found something similar with the Domi, fit medium rails/blasters, and you have PG/CPU for an awesome tank, and the DPS is still just as good as with large rails/blasters fitted...

Use T2 Heavies. Lots of people like to fit the Thorax with small blasters... just doesn't do justice to it really. Just makes it an expensive tackler really and a cumbersome one at that. Most of the small blaster fits have a 1600mm plate in mind, and in order to fit one you have to fit small blasters.
I always preferred to use Heavy Ion Blaster IIs on mine. You can get a good tank, never mind the ship bonus to medium hybrid damage.
1600mm plate rax is like the middle child of optimal performance givin low sps. If you have a lot of skills to compliment the ship, it really makes no sense to fit small blasters to it.

alone i would use the 1600mm plate small blaster setup and in gangs i would use ION II

Heavy electron I's start to outperform light neutron II's at medium hybrid 4/gall cruiser 4. From there and when you get t2 med hybrids the gap widens considerably. Considering there's a 1600 plate setup that can utilize heavy electrons, I can only see using light neuts if you don't have the skills to make medium hybrids work.

it used to be more common when the thorax had a larger drone bay and depended on drones more than its guns. now i would prob fit medium guns and a passive tank.

Dont do it on a Thorax, do it on a Maller if anything.
