How about having local show ship types instead of player names (until they've spoken).

hes got a point though, how do you know who it is untill you chat with them.
the only only problem is that this promotes not talking to each other in local even more. and seeing as it's a rather quite place i believe that maybe it should be kept as open to conversation as possible rather than having to go... Me: "hey you in the battlecruiser, where are you from" Battlecruiser: "who me?" Me: "No the other guy in the battlecruiser. sorry" Battlecruiser: "What! you dont like me!"
bang im dead.. all because i didnt know a guys name cause it wasnt displayed to me and now i'll never use local again for fear of this happening.

Heh, how about having an intelligent discussion?
The scanner shows all ships within a given radius regardless if they're currently occupied or not.
The premise of this idea would be to prevent local from being the all knowing eye of the solar system while retaining some usefulness such as showing what is actively being flown in system.
Another idea would be to leave local as it is and 'create' a skill that gives people a chance to slip into a system undetected.

nice idea, but better change it that way:
make local hw ship types + name for people who have set you to +ve standing and/or their buddy list and only ship type for the rest.

The benefits of people not being able to see who you are and what corp you are in are vastly outweighed by the legions of unskilled players who would be a sitting duck in low sec, 0.0, and during empire war.
Also if this was implimented, alot of system hopping PvP would end, as you would now have to scout each ship of the type your quarry was flying in space in each system before you could be sure you went the wrong way.
This would make hunting specific targets harder if they spotted you, but ganking the unaware so much easier. I see absolutely no benefits to the game if this was implimented, infact real warfare outside of blobs would end completely.
The only benefit this could give, apart from low sec pirates and empire greifers, would be to 0.0 corps who are too small to be engaged in large fleet combat for territory, and who are terrible at fighting/defending their operations. They could now simply lurk around in the background, especially if they had a few ships sitting at deep space safepots or POS.
No I am not in favour of this idea whatsoever. This is a terrible idea that would severely impact EvE in general in a negative fashion, who's only benefits would be to carebear 0.0 corps skulking around, and empire greifers/low sec pirates.
Intelligent discussion indeed. Any fool knows this suggestion was made because it would benefit you, not EvE.

Could balance this out two ways
First, limited chat channels to Region / Constellation that way Local is not the all seeing eye. Great cloaking device I have here, since there are 15 war targets and me in a system. Hmmm.....
Then, have an indicator window that show warp signatures, so it would give you a rough idea of how many ships are in system, but not what kind or where unless....
You use your scanner
