Edited by: blkmajik on 03/01/2007 23:47:31 ollobrains: you need to skill up to at least Reading Level II before posting again. I said this was something I thought about to myself but never shared before. I thought about this before I even joined POS ;) Its not a policy anywhere and I said it shouldn't be. its to illustrate a point. Maybe people would stop trashing every Privateer post if its members showed an ounce of intelligence anywhere in the eve community =/ OHH, LOGIN TRAPS! CRY!
yes, i agree, its a bad solution and i initially said that. but given the goal is to detect moles, there is not much of a better way to do it! i think thats the problem. I dunno much about the eula wording about this stuff, but if what is said is true, then i guess that means the only thing to do is to live with the fact that every corp in the game has a serious mole threat and there isn't a thing you can do about it without risking getting in trouble. everyone is defenseless until victimized.
relying on screenshots or ANYTHING the recruit sends you is always easy for a mole to defeat. everything that would be identifying can be forged. the only way to know for sure is to go to the source yourself and look. its a classic case of auditing the system vs interviewing the system operator.
as for it being legal, that depends on too many things to even discuss here. If you use the popular 'unauthorized access' definition to define it, then its perfectly legal if the recruit installs VNC and gives you the password and consent to access his machine in a certain way =/ as long as you dont trash his pc, there is no damage and no unauthorized access. doesn't help the EULA situation though.
saying that seeing somoene's login is a serious security risk is a joke if you ask me, regardless of policy. its the freaking unique identifier, not the authentication token.

i can see it now ppl applying to join POS and when asked to give details such as those said in this thread breaking the EULA and then petitiioning CCP
Prime orbital systems recruitment guys may want to review their recruitment procedures as tbh numerous EULA breaches and perhaps legal breaches regarding remote monitoring software - u would probably actually need real world legal Non disclosure agreements and complex legal agreements to be able to pull it off.
Recruitment has nothing to do with the EULA, since the community behind a corporation/alliance is something indipendent and is not CCP.

You may also want to do a rectal search, you never know how many spies your applicants might be hiding up there.
Demand a copy of their driver's license and their real home address.
Then proceed to go to the stated home address to check if it's true.

Will my mom's basement suffice as a home address?
I think blkmajik makes a pretty good point though. CCP has, by their lack of design, enabled the next generation griefers to flourish and that not even borderline illegal interrogations can stop them from infiltrating and destroying an entire corp, nevermind an alliance.
edit: decided to add some content.

Excellent guide for the basics in Recruitment in EVE.
Besides Recruitment, a lot can be gained by managing your corp proper after the recruit got in. I read posts on corptheft where an inactive player still had director level access after months of inactivity, corp hangars filled to the brim with goodies for relative new players, etc.
Besides some basic security checks, I just accept there will be spies / thieves, even if there arent any.

Try looking up the employment status and title of characters for sale in the trade forums (the name is usually in a screenshot). Some of them are still in some decent corps, some with title that suggest they have roles or shares. easy way to turn mediocre buy into a bargain ;) I wonder how much of this goes unnoticed?

you can't transfer character in player corps I accidently delayed a corp member splitting his acct, we had a merger with a corp that split off from us and our old alliance(they went to pvp a bit), they merged with us on a whole right after we moved to 0.0... I was doing a mass assign roles and clicked him by accident

I never did understand why some corps are so open with access rights. I always laugh at people who demand them after joining, like they have any right to them just for being a member.
More than 2 Directors is excessive. And they definately should be players you would trust with your own personal assets.

That is most people's opinion. However, if CCP are of a different opinion, there's nothing much you can do.

Ive brosed thru most of the replys here.None deal with what makes someone a spy. There are three fundmental motives for becoming a spy. - Love. - Ideology - Greed
Any motive to turn is derived from one of the catagories above. I will leave Love alone since well, uless they are *** it is very unliky it will be the driving force. And even if they are *** it would still be the least likly possibility.
Ideology. I agree wish their veiws and not those of my own people. Therefore it is moraly right for me to help them. This is a classical one. The sovjet that doesnt belive in his own system and thus aids the american by providing intel. In this category you can also find people that feels they have been misstreated by their own organisation and wants revenge.( and we do see once in awhile people posting screenshots with various information and the poster that hopes this will hurt his former friends.) In this category you also find the real life frineds that are on different sides of a war in eve. Most people in this category are not spies during requitment, they become it. So no matter what your efforts are, you are only kidding yourself. Harsh requitment methods will probably generates more spies in this category this it will find.
-Greed. Kind of says it all there doesnt it. Offer enough isk.....combine with ideology and you got a serious winner. This guy you wont find at requitment either since he too are much more likly to become a spy. The exception to that it the corpthieft that are premeditated. But then, they guy how plans 6 month ahead to be able to steal wont get cought during requiment either. To get him you have to watch his behaviour once in the corp.
Bottomline, the stupid guy you may catcth at requitment, maybe. But then he si not much of a worry anyway is he? Or do you plan to make mr stupid CEO? None of methods will get you the smart guy, the guy you do need to worry about. Like joshua showed, it is sometimes very easy to show people what they want to see. Ease up instead, enjoy the game instead of conducting witchhunts.
Just keep the most sensitive stuff on a need to know basis, but dont clam up. Treat peole nice, give them trust on alot of things. Just keep the real sensitive things close.

When someone is asking for access to Corp hanger and for some money on the first day they are in the corp, will lead to suspicion.
Say you had the account for 2 days, but your employment log says 23 hrs, then be suspicious.
as for Character Selection screens, feel free to have all of mine. lol I have nothing to hide :P Loyal to Tech 1 Assault and Lotka Volterra.
