Are they like ammunition, by which I mean can another be reloaded after the first has been used ? Or have you shot your bolt the first time around ?

They have no ammunition - they burn cap to deal damage.

They also hit everything within their radius - everything including stargates, Concord, non-hostile pilots, your buddies, you name it.
Lots of fun, but use judiciously. _______

Smartbombs are not a one time use module. You can use the same one over and over again. Each time you use it, it takes a certain amount of cap. It will keep firing until you turn it off.

The answer I least expected. Who'd have thought a bomb of all things could be used over and over.
We live & learn eh ?

Not to mention a "smart" bomb that hits everything around it.

Smart bombs are poorly named. They are neither smart nor bombs. But they are indeed infinitely re-usable (though I can certainly understand any confusion from somebody who has not used one before).

Oh, an explosion that manages to damage anything around you, in all directions, without actually hurting you in the process? Try doing that with a hand grenade and see what happens :P
I'd say smartbombs aren't nearly as stupid as most people claim, as it's the fault of the person using it if it hits something you don't want it to.
Think of it this way: You wouldn't point a gun and shoot at a CONCORD ship, so why would you set off a bomb near one?

They're really nice for getting rid of drones

especially your own drones. :)
They also dont blow up cans or stargates or warpgates so somewhat smart.
You can also fit multiple smart bombs. Here is a demo of a Raven destroying 9 ships and 9 pods in 30 seconds with smartbombs.

I had this idea to use a smartbombs-only fitting on missioning/ratting... I haven't put it to relaity yet but I wonder: would this be.. huh.. smart? Has someone tried that? ----- " There's no brave in a 5-to-1 fight. Just 5 cowards and a fool. - Perhaps. But it worked didn't it?" |

I tried two on my Tempest for a level four, instead of cruise missiles. It worked alright, I guess. My drones could have handled them, to be honest, but I wanted to try smartbombs.
Using a full 8x large smartbomb fit is only really useful for sitting by the edge of a mobile warp disruptor and blindsiding frigates and shuttles who get caught by it. Too little damage for too much capacitor otherwise.

Not really... first of all, you have to be VERY careful smartbombing in high-sec missions. Some things will get you Concordokkened. Secondly, without a MWD, good luck keeping NPC rats in the killzone. As you may or may not know, MWDs don't work in deadspace.
When I ran missions, I usually fitted a large smartbomb of the appropriate damage type, if for no other reason than it makes destroying structures much quicker, with no ammo needs, and it makes for some spectacular explosions. Of course, the smartbomb also helps for drones or tight-orbit frigs/interceptors. If you practice at it, you can also use the smartbomb to take out the waves of missiles NPCs like to throw at you. They do burn the hell out of cap though, so keep that in mind.

I use smart bombs more for defense, rather than offense. They are great for things that get into close range. It's fun to pop a handfull of rouge drones or pirate fighters, and then you can scoop up all the loot at once. :)
Whatch out for your own drones though, it will pop them too. Also, some pilots will intentionally fly into your explosion field so they can get aggro on you, and of course this is when Concord will destroy you before you even know what happened. :( <--from experience

I don't use them much - however I was having another look at small smartbombs yesterday because I realised that they could be used on a Badger II in the 2nd high slot if the first was used by, say, a Miner II. The 3000m range is a problem though. Proud to be a CareBear |
