im curious as to how the hell projectile weapon/ammo sizing works...
ie: small projectile ammo can fit 125mm, 150mm, 200mm, 250mm and 280mm guns, but not into 2x180mm or 220mm guns... and the same with medium projectile ammo. it can fit in 2x180mm, 220mm, 425mm, 650mm and 720mm guns, but not 200mm 250mm or 280mm.
im willing to overlook the fact that we have a projectile round which automagically knows what size to be, and can even be unloaded from a 250mm gun and be pushed into a gun half its size (125mm). im also willing to overlook the fact that artillery and 'machine gun' type guns use substantially different ammo.
what confuses the bejesus out of me is that my automagic size/type shell which can change size from 125mm to 280mm cant fit into a 220mm cannon (as well as my other shells which can change from 180mm to 720mm *and thats a damn big caliber change* cant fit into 200mm 250mm or 280mm cannons)
if anyone has any ideas on how in gods name this works... drop me a line, id love to know.
and thus you have the biggest mystery of eve...
ps: id also like to know how my 180mm-720mm shell can split into two for use in dual 180mm AC but still only use one round of ammo

its a serious question.
its like you have three naval vessels. one has a 2" gun, one has a 4" gun and one has a 5" gun. the 2" gun ship runs out of ammo, so the 5" gun ship sends some of the ammo from their gun, this ammo fits perfectly into the 2" gun (via some sort of magic) later on in the battle the ship with the 4" gun runs out of ammo, but the ammo from the 2"/5" guns DOESNT FIT.
tbh id kill my magicians if the pulled **** like that on me.

Originally by: Lyria Skydancer -Why do EM, EXP, KIN damage exist? They are all in the end a form of thermal damage on material. (kin and thermal actually pretty much same thing though, heat = atoms moving faster, EM heats stuff = atoms moving faster = stuff gets hot)
Actually, this doesn't refer to different types of energies, but rather different methods of dealing damage. For example, consider today's two methods of piercing armor. The first method is to use a sabot round to attempt to pierce the armor (kinetic round). The second method is to use a chemical reaction to burn a hole through the armor (thermal method). EM damage probably has something more to do with using light to disrupt shield generation and cause the shield generators to overload and thus damage armor/structure. Explosive would probably involve using a small amount of kinetic energy to embed an explosive inside the armor to try to force it apart.
-Why does a ship orbiting an immobile target get transversal penalty on its guns? (eve programmers prolly too lazy to program the physics of this game accurately)
This is probably because they have to compute physics server side to prevent hacking, and it would be next to impossible to have TQ computer realistic physics like that for 30,000 people at once 20 times a second
-What do gyrostabilizers have to do with boosted rate of fire and damage? Shouldnt this give better accurace only? They probably also help the reloading mechanism to reload faster, or stops the turret from moving around so much after firing, thus allowing it to reload the next round faster
-Why do heatsinks give more damage on lasers ontop of the rate of fire boost? Allows heat build up to dissapate quicker in the laser turret. This means that the laser turret can fire a stronger beam without overheating, and it can cooldown faster in preperation for the next shot
-Why do lasers have range or falloff? Lasers is EM wave, if ship can lock target lasers should reach it. It is almost surely impossible to build a "perfect" laser. Contrary to popular belief, lasers do not shoot a perfectly straight ray of congruent light. There is a small amount of error, and over time/distance the laser will disperse

Obviously all the rounds use sabots. Basicly a bushing that makes smaller ammo fit in a bigger gun. Why this doesnt this work between small and medium ammo types? They don't make sabot those sizes.

Sabots. All ammo of a given size are the same size, what is different is the size of the sabot (casing) around it that holds it snugly into the weapon. What is different is the amount of propellant behind the sabot, hence the different ranges and damage done. Dual barrel weapons work first by dividing the round in half, then encasing in the sabot.
Edit: Darn it, plastic beat me to it.

I've always thought of gun sizes as calibre; barrel length divided by bore diameter, meaning that a 425mm railgun has the same diameter as a dual 250 but with a 70% longer "barrel". Thus a 250 and a dual 250 can have different diameter as long as the length also differs.

The #1 most illogical thing in Eve:
"Recognizing the necessity for a blaster platform to round out their high-end arsenal, the Federation Navy brought in top-level talent to work on the Hyperion."
Right on Gallente Federation, you totally needed another blasterboat, it's just not like the Megathhron was doing a good job at it! Too bad Caldari are the only ones that acctually got the ship they needed to round off their arsenal.

Packaging is the vast majority of space occupied by the crystal while it's in your cargo hold. The crystal itself must be kept in hard vacuum at all times and never touch any object, because it can't have even a single speck of dust on it. The box contains a pressurized chamber with magnetic containment and its own power generator, and is several orders of magnitude larger than the crystal it contains. The containment system itself is placed wholesale into the weapon's crystal chamber, which is also the reason for which you can sometimes recover working crystals from wrecks. Larger crystals do occupy slightly larger boxes, but not by any significant margin. Similar considerations apply to many other pieces of EVE equipment; this hi-tech stuff is very delicate! Originally by: Flinx Evenstar 1. Shields dont exist baby...EM energy is not very good at stopping mass. there is some kind of C to the power of 2 equation involved. And its quite a big number...in joules or something.
It's not that bad. The shields don't have to stop mass, only to deflect it enough to either miss completely, or make it hit the armor at an angle and location where the projectile bounces or damage is irrelevant. We in the 21st century could probably build a magnetic "shield", against metal objects at least, if only we had a sufficiently powerful energy source. Quote: 3. How can Warp speed be dependent on mass...as it is faster than light. Mass cannot even be a factor in warp, as only things that have no mass can exceed the spee...oh my head...
IRL, as far as we know, nothing can exceed the speed of light. Things with no mass can reach it, but that's it. So, Warp speed doesn't rely on "simply" ignoring the ship's mass somehow, and therefore there is no reason for which mass shouldn't be a factor.
As for why ships don't have fuel - they probably do. We don't know what it is, but we don't really care either; the engines and power core are both so efficient that fuel is effectively endless, or so close to it that it's not worth implenting it in the game. Maybe it's neutronium, or antimatter, or whatever, the point is that the people of EVE have solved the energy problem. We don't have infinite readily available energy (ie, cap), but we do have virtually infinite energy over time.
This is why you don't worry about the containment in the frequency crystal packages running out of juice.

3. Id have an explanation for this actually. Warp "tunnels" are like shortcuts in space. This is kinda the theory behind all these fast travel tricks in space because everyone knows you cant go faster then light or even get to lightspeed. So there is a shortcut in a 4th space dimention that you enter when warping. Here you still fly like you do in space but every km will count a thousend fold or more.

How come turrets can miss but they always graphically hit?
Tracking systems are so advanced that, at the short distances engagements take place, the projectile usually doesn't literally miss. Rather, the shields and armor of the target ship deflect it harmlessly, unless it hits at the correct angle. In the case of shields, this can mean that the projectile never actually touches the ship, even if it looks like it! Also, notice that even depleted shields might still have enough energy to change the direction of an incoming projectile a little bit, enough that it hits the armor at the wrong angle and fails to cause serious damage. Quote: How come missiles always hit but they always graphically miss?
Missiles are so slow, compared to projectiles, that even depleted shields can deflect them. Luckily for us Caldari, they don't need to actually hit the ship in order to do damage - the shrapnel, shock or energy wave they release is enough. Quote: How come Minmatar are only able to fire projectiles (which would need an air atmosphere to work anyway) but they can use shield technology?!
Projectiles don't necessarily need an atmosphere. And what's wrong with them anyway? Not futuristic enough? Projectiles are damn effective at hurting things for cheap, and I don't expect them to go away any time soon. Quote: How come your ship will never fly updide down? Uhm... look out behind you! A three-headed monkey! Quote: How come you can fit a computer able to cope with the calculations of a decent Cloak only on a small frigate and a cruiser, but nothing bigger where you'd have more space for such things?
I reckon that the specialized equipment required to use cloaks involves multiple nodes spread across the ship's surface and linked in some very strange fashion, because by the time it'd take data to get from surface to the central core, it would be too late to do something about it. Light is that damn fast. So you need to have the entire ship hull redesigned for that purpose. For the same reason, cloaking a big ship might be very hard, because you can't figure out how to warp the EM waves quickly enough. Quote: How come the markup on t2 ships is so high and thus is never even slightly covered by insurance (meaning a good 1/6 of all ships are uninsurable? (insurance should be based on regional market value instead of base cost!)
The real question is - how come the Eve insurance company hasn't run out of business about three days after opening?
