Ive been doing some mining with my amarr character, balancing it with combat when i feel like doing so. However im not sure which of the amarr ships i should be mining with. I had been mining in a 0.5 system in a tormentor with t2 mining lasers and then hauling with a bestower, however i lost the ship to npc's when i wasnt paying full attention. I have access to cruisers and frigates, but im not sure if i should stick to a tormentor or get a cruiser, and if i do get a cruiser, i have no idea which one to pick up.
Im at the thought now that by using a cruiser i would increase my mining yield as i would have the power to take down npc rats and continue mining rather than having to warp out, jump into my maller , take them down and get back into the tormentor. Any advice?
And please dont tell me "get an apoc or a mining barge" if i could afford either of them i wouldnt be here.

When EVE was brand new we used to mine with industrial ships. Now there are better things but if you don't have the isk they can still work pretty well because of their large holds.
I would only get a cruiser if you never plan to enter low sec space with it. They are simply too expensive to lose when you are just starting out.

Quote: Special Ability: 5% bonus to cargo capacity and 20% bonus to mining laser yield per level. -60% mining laser capacitor use
Basically, you have to work out how much the tormentor mines and compare it with a cruiser.
Maller has 5 turret points, so it "COULD" fit 5 lasers if there was enough CPU. Tormentor has 2 turret points, so 2 lasers. But with a 20% bonus per level, depending on your frigate level (Going to be at least 60% bonus (Frigate Level 3)) wether you would mine more in the tormentor.
Im not an amarr characer, so work out how much you mine with the torm and then with the maller (or another cruiser)
Check the mining guide it may have helpful information.
//Update..
Checked it with QuickFit.. With my skills and level 3 amarr frigate you should be getting around 324m3 per min.
With a Maller 530m3 per min
If my figures are correct then the maller would be better. If my figures are incorrect then blame quickfit lol.

There is always one cruiser designed especially for mining (or logistics support), but in the case of the Amarr, its bonus boosts mining drones rather than lasers so it's only worthwhile if your drone skills are up to snuff.
You might want to consider getting a Caldari ship for mining, for the simple reason that it has more CPU. More CPU = more room to boost the output of your mining lasers by fitting miner 2's and adding mining upgrades.I know that the Minmatar Burst, although having the exact same hardpoints and bonusses as the Bantam, is a worse miner because it's CPU doesn't let you mount 2 miner 2's without maxing Electronics and adding a CPU booster (which uses slots that could have been used for mining upgrades).

Get a Scythe or an Osprey, they're the best two mining cruisers in the game.
If you can't be bothered though, then I'd mine with the tormenter, and just change belts each time a rat pops up.

Amarr don't really have a mining cruiser. The Maller would be the closest however, it cannot defend itself against NPCs if it fits a full rack of mining lasers, as it doesn't have a drone bay. The Omen does have a drone bay, so it can defend itself, however it only has 4 turret slots to fit mining lasers.
Best bet would be to try to train for an Osprey, or perhaps even start working on a medium mining barge, the Retriever I believe it is. This is better than mining cruisers, and not all that expensive. It can't tank very well, however against high sec NPCs it should be able to defend itself reasonably well.

My opinion:
Mine in the maller (I was able to fit 4 miner 2's on it with low electronics skill back when I did this) while you work on the skills to use a retreiver. No need to waste time training to fly caldari cruiser, as the time would be better used to get into the mining barge.
Stick to higher security systems if you dont want to worry about rats shooting at you, with the prices of minerals as they are now, you can make a decent amount off mining the mid level ores in the higher sec systems. -=^=-

I found the Omen to be a fairly good miner. I could fit 4 miner 2's to it that will out mine that crappy small mining barge with only one strip miner. It has 3 drones to protect it from the smaller rats and I have a missile launcher fitted also. it also has a bigger hold than the Maller so you don't have to worry about you miners shutting down so much if the hold gets a bit full.

Edited by: Aldirien Rathmore on 27/02/2007 16:15:19 Well I use a Destroyer (Coercer) to mine in 0.5 and 0.6 systems. It is cheaper than a cruiser at only around 900,000 to 1,000,000 isk and can mine and fend off rats without any issues.
The fitting:
Hi- 4 x XeCl Mining Lasers (Cu Vapor would work well also) 4 x Dual Modal Light Laser with Infrared crystals
Med- 1 x Cap Recharger I
Lo- 4 x Co-Processor I
With Mining V I pull in around 235m^3 of ore per cycle and it takes me about 15 minutes to fill a Giant secure container. I don't even shut off the mining lasers when 'rats come calling in packs of 2-3. It only takes 5-10 seconds to kill each rat then I can go back to moving ore from my cargo to my anchored cans. The XeCl has a better ratio of ore mined per tf of cpu cycle than Miner II or CuVapor which is why I use them in this application. When you don't have tons of slots the others are better but here I've got tons of slots but a limited cpu budget. I find it is a decent worker while you wait for your skills in Cruiser to get higher.

I mine in Amarr .5 space with a Vexor. It is a gallente cruiser that has a bonus to miner drones yield, and a large drone space. I can load 4 miner II lasers, 5 miner II drones, and 5 hammerheads.
As soon as the rats pop, in comes the miners, out comes the hammerheads, poof goes the rats.
If you don't want to put skill points into drones, I don't think miner drones are worth the work. Most people mine with lasers and keep drones on hand to handle the rats.

Id say train up mining drones and get an Arbitrator, but I'm not a miner as my sig would show if it hadn't got nerfed Your signature is too large. Please see the Forum Rules for the limits - Serathu ([email protected])

With it's mining bonus (and Amarr Frigate at level 5) the Tormentor can yield as much with 2 T2 mining lasers as any cruiser or destroyer with 4 lasers. Unless you can fit 5 lasers, or 4 lasers and at least one Mining Laser Upgrade, then I'd sitck with the cheaper Tormentor for now.
The Arbitrator doesn't look too appealing. The Vexor (Gallente cruiser with bonuses to mining drones) can actually fit 4 T2 mining lasers plus 1 MLU, where the Arbitrator only has 2 turret hardpoints. You do have the same size dronebay, though... good enough to hold 5 medium drones for protection and 5 mining drones for when the protection isn't required. They're not going to compensate for only having 2 mining lasers, though. Stick with the Tormentor for now, and if you really want to mine, your next step should be an Osprey or a Retriever.
Your frigate gets its bonus based on your frigate skill level. Consider training up to frigate level 5 to get the full 100% bonus for your minnig lasers.
