Well,
Let's hope that, at least next weekend, we will be able to change it. December 7th, EVE Online World Record Attempt.
Man this gotta be a tough... _______________________________________________

At this rate I rekon in 6 - 9 months they will be forced to shut down due to lack of people playing.
Go to Eve-i.de and check the server stats.
The game is in visible decline and (according to the graphs) we have not had over 5K on for some time (but I could have read this wrong!)
Personally I fear the worst!

"Go to Eve-i.de and check the server stats."
... If you check the graph, something went wrong today with the servers during the usual climb, to the point they had to restart the system. Would've probably been more people logged, had that not happened (although still much lower than it used to be, but that's another story)

It was already on its way down for an hour and a half before the server problem hit.

Aye, but not in the usual way so am guessing people were being disconnected due to the problem(s). When it got too bad, they restarted the server....

I think that the trend in the last 6 months is not affected by it, and, unfortunately, it's sadly going down no matter what we say _______________________________________________

The game population will stabilize itself and the game won't die out.
Numbers won't be what we or CCP would like them to be.
Its a same story for all online games. Just look at EnB, people said it will die when EVE was to be released and then again for SWG. Yet they have pretty stable numbers and i even think they got few more new players recently.
Same thing will be with EVE, they will keep core players and attract new ones with special promotions which will then result in few more players hooked.

Maybe a lot of EVE players are in high school or at university? The downward trend may just reflect getting into the school year and the approach of exams. Students tend to have more free time during the summer.
Hopefully there will be a spike over the Christmas holidays.

Does anyone factor this into those retared graphs?
Does it fatcor in ALL online players who logged in or just the current logged in numbers cause as I see it, I see people log in for 5 mins then log off never to return till another 2 days till they log in again and re train a new skill -- I know as I am soon turning into one of them.
That means that EVE could have a strong database of players its just 3 to 4,000 of them are fans who play all day and the others just log on and off to train skills, hence why the graph looks like its dropping when in fact it is leveled out. Its just not showing the recorded total number of logged on users for a 24 hour period.

Good point. Then we need to know what is the timeslice that EVE-I works on. I guess it's around 60 seconds, but that's only a guess.
Statistically, your point is made: the eve player characteristic might be changing, from someone who logs on to play, to someone who logs on just to train a skill. In either case, it's not good imho. It shows that the players are somewhat loosing the interest about the game. But I can be wrong.
BTW, where is your old sig ? _______________________________________________

I think it's the number of people who are actually logged in at that time. Pretty much the same you get when you start up eve and see how many are online. People who only check their skills will be only counted if they are online at the same time as they check the player count, which seems to happen every 1-5 minutes.
And for the "It's only that way because there are exams, etc." What about - no? At this time there is no special exam pressure, perhaps in january/february. The actual times are pretty diverse depending on country, school, etc, they counter each other out. In July/August I commented about the steady playerbase drop already - and was promtly flamed with comments like "that's only because it's holiday season, people are outside/away/..". All the effect the end of the summer had was that the playerbase leveled for a short time and restarted it's downfall soon after.

CCP are going to be fully advertising the game when they get everything under control. They havn't started yet, because as they are new to mmogs, they want to stabalize the game before they market it. You can expect a major influx of new players when they do though.

Number 1 and 2 are nice too
Well,
1 thing I know for a fact: if the code that is on chaos right now is ironed out, and the bugs killed, it will be a hell of an "upgrade" to the game. It looks nice too. _______________________________________________

Suprising that no one pointed out that it was Thanksgiving weekend in the US- a holiday where millions of americans traditionally travel to see their family and such.

Suprised noones pointed out the extremly poor server performance yesterday.
Logging in after dt i took an absolute age to 'enter space' when it did finaly wake up, to my suprise i was floating in a 0.0 belt on fire, despite logging in a safe place 5 mins before dt.
30 seconds longer and i would have lost a mega
Then numerious ctd's all afternoon, about 15 in total, before i cleared off, along with some of the corp.
The lag was terible.
Might explain the server drops me thinks. ------------------------

I reckon a lot of ppl are just bored with the game as it is atm.
I'll start to worry once tech2 patch hits TQ and the numbers continue to drop. The tech2 patch will be a milestone, a lot of ppl with quit if ccp mess that one up.
So i doubt you can say anything about droping numbers till we see the next new patch. -- The worst thing you can do when suggesting a solution to a problem is to provide alternatives, people end up arguing the alternatives instead of implementing the fix. |

I love the idea of playing a pirate and have only just got into it; Im not a fry cook or dishwasher (in fact I earn way way way more than a lot of people and am currently helping to build the worlds biggest robot) and even if I was ... so what? Face it, people get to do things here they can't in real life.
This trend with player numbers is always the same with new'ish MMORPG's. Mass influx at launch, people like/dislike the game and stay/quit. Numbers stabalise and this is where things usual stay without encouragement from major launches or upgrades in game.
Bring on the next tech level!

Don't Forget that this weekend is a big holiday weekend for most US ppl. Alot of players are out visiting relatives and may not have had the opportunity to log on. Like half my corp.

perhaps if they introduced the option to unlock a force sensitive player slot so we can have jedi's running around, Eve could get some new players.

Wouldn't the important stat to watch be current accounts. I don't know if this information is availible but if that number isn't changing significantly who cares about the number on people actually playing. I know that it is reasonable to think there would be a direct correlation but its also possible there isnt'. People may have lost an interest to play as much as they once did but still have a desire to stay attached to eve and thus maintain their accounts active. Its just a possibility not trying to say that is what is happening.
personally I don't play as much as I used to because the reality of being in a persistant universe has lead me to believe I don't need to. So i can just log in for smaller periods of time, Play some and log off knowing that nothing is going to occur in eve tthat will have a major impact on my char. If you can catch me you can have me. |

playing *any* game is interesting after having a few......maybe not get to the top of the scoreboard, but it's fun.
Actually, i seem to do even better playing in a semi-drunk state than when i'm sober.

Frankly, I've been logged on for more than 5 minutes only once in the last four weeks.
There isn't much in Eve that interests me right now, and there are other things I'd rather be doing.
Hopefully, the tech 2 patch will get me interested again, although at ú7 a month, it's not exactly breaking the bank to just sit there and train skills (Lvl 5 Refinery Efficiency - here I come!).

Edited by: AngelThunder on 01/12/2003 21:01:25 Being one of the American players, I'd have to say that Thanksgiving weekend had much to do with the low numbers. I was in traffic all day Sunday on a 10hr drive, along with ?? number of Eve players out visiting family also.
