I'm almost done training Mining Barge V finally. Which is the pre-requisite for flying the Covetor and exhumers. Is there any reason to fly the elite barges in empire?
should I skip the covetor and go right to exhumers? or are the bonuses basically the same?
Since I only mine in empire, and the system I've chosen doesn't have anything special, it's scordite/plagio I guess that means the ice bonus for exhumers wouldnt help me right?

There isn't any mercoxit to mine in empire, so the Skiff isn't much use. The Mackinaw isn't any better than the covetor except at mining ice (again, rarer in empire), and the Hulk, mining from empire belts, will take so long to pay for itself at the current extortionate prices that you might as well not bother with it. ------
So you're lagged out in Motsu/Saila/Aramachi, but you want that CNR? Do missions for another corp! |

Hulk is nice because, with a proper tank on, they are pretty much immune to an Empire gank. Some pilots will suicide gank Covetors if they are running MSM-IIs. Sure a Hulk could, in theory, be suicide ganked but they are so much harder to kill the suiciders are likely to lose a lot more money than they gain trying thus making them rather safe.
As for being better a Hulk can fit a second mining upgrade which the lower level barges cannot thus improving its performance as well as a 3% better yield per Exhumer skill level (above and beyond the barge skill levels).
As mentioned though the Hulk is gawdawful expensive. If you mine in hi-sec a LOT it might pay itself off but it'd take awhile.

I havent been using MSM's which I obviously should buy and fit with a certain type of crystal.
I haven't been able to find any omber in empire so I've been mining plag/scord/pyro
Which ore is the best to specialize in, in empire?

skiff: no use in empire mack: not much ice in high-sec and unless you run your own POS I don't think it's too profitable to mine, low-sec is a different matter but still I'm not sure if solo-ice mining just to sell it is such a useful task hulk: the 2nd mining upgrade and 2nd yield bonus can make a difference but you have to calculate yourself if using the hulk over a covetor is worth it; low-sec is a different matter, you'll want a hulk for the added protection against harder spawns and pirates alone, although losing one is more painful, too
BTW, at this very moment the "lowbie" ore with tons of pyerite and mexallon might be more worth it than the low-sec ore...

The ONLY time it's worth buying a Hulk for in-Empire mining is if you have plans to move out into no sec, have a lot of cash sitting around you don't mind losing, and find a good deal.
I use a Hulk normally for in-Empire, but that is only for the above reasons. Had a lot of cash, found a good deal, and decided to go ahead and take the plunge.
I have no expectations that the money I spent is anything but lost. When I get to deep 0.0 someday, then I'll pay it off. Until then, I just look at it and say, "Damn, that bugger was expensive."

Minerial Mining
Sort out the top miners and T2 crystals before buying a Hulk.
Hulk can tank the rats and pirates in empire so you find belt with rats and deliberately don't kill them. This enables you to use Mining drones without risk of loss (assume someone doesn't come along and pop the rats and then they respawn). This focused mining adds yield compared to some Covetor users that have to pull out the combat drones to pop rats periodically.
Hulk value - say you have an alt hauler on second account then you'll get towards 10m per hour with gang bonues, T2 crystals etc. So assumptions for calc...
1. Hulk makes you an extra 1.5m per hour (15% of 10m per hour, I know it can max out at more but lets say you average the extra 15% over your early months)
2. Hulk costs 510m.
3. You mine for 2 hours per day on average (so that could be 4 hours every other day)
To refill the wallet with an extra 510m is 170 days. After that it's an extra 3m per day (90m per month profit)
One point of note though, you haven't lost 510m in the first place, you've just converted isk into asset. So as long as they don't significantly depreciate you've lost nothing as you could convert the asset into isk fairly ealisy in future.
I hope my opinion you find of value.

don't forget that a Hulk can fit 2 mining upgrade modules (pretty easily too), as opposed to the Covetor which can only fit 1.
So presuming anyone serious enough to get into a hulk would also train for Exhumers 5 to get the most out of what they got, that's a 15% bonus and another 5% bonus to yield for an effective 20.75% increase to yield over a Covetor with identical skills and fittings otherwise.

Personally I'm still just mining Kern, Pyro, Scor. In that order if I can find it. Pyro makes the money with the Nocxium in it, and most miners mine the Kern and leave. While the Kern does earn a significant amount of money, the money I can get from Pyro is nothing to sneeze at either. I'm happy mining Pyro if I have nothing else.
I'd love a Hulk, but as others have said, losing one with the prices as outrageous as they are might be enough to make me consider dropping mining for combat. |

The Gent,
Want to thank you for an intelligent response to the OP. A refreshing reply in this EVE environment where flaming and inane responses are the norm.
