The GIMP is free. And if you don't like the interface, the fork GIMPshop is very similar to Photoshop.
Not the same, sure, but you can save 600 dollars.

Photoshop is the daddy of image manipulation apps. A legal copy is very expensive though - there is a cut-down version called Elements which I've heard good things about, maybe try that?

to hell with photoshop. the gimp or gimpshop like the other guy said. people thumb their noses at gimp because its not photoshop but it's still way more advanced than the average user can fully utilize. ---- Would you like some cries with your whaaamburger? |

Paint Shop Pro is another good option, not quite as powerful out of the box as photoshop, but close enough and it uses most of the same plugins easily.

Good thing its actually easier to install a NoSteam patch for a Steam program than to install Steam itself...

download the installer for gimp and then the gtk+ installer that matches what version of windows you are using. gimp is a little confusing at first but it's not at all bad once you get the hang of it. ---- Would you like some cries with your whaaamburger? |

Edited by: Vari on 10/01/2007 10:49:36 I hate Linux programs translated to Windows. As free as they are, they have sub-par GUIs and are counter-intuitive. And slower too of course (Opera vs Firefox, MS Office vs Open Office). Do try the free MS Paint replacement, Paint.NET, in addition to GIMP if you're going the free route.

Are you nuts?
Saying a GTK or QT-based GUI is "sub-par" compared to Windows is like saying a Ferrari is "sub-par" compared to a Focus. The last thing Windows is known for is a good GUI.
Speed has nothing to do with them being "from Linux." Firefox is actually faster than Opera, by the way, if you use an optimized build like Swiftfox. It can be slower in some cases because the Firefox code tree is easily an order of magnitude larger than Opera--it has millions upon millions of lines of code and a huge number of features, while Opera is quite stripped down. OpenOffice is slower because its written in Java, versus Office which is written in C++.

I'm sorry, I do retract my statement about comparing OpenOffice to MS Office and the GUIs (I've never given Linux more than a passing trial). But I do stand by my simple claim that programs written for Windows tend to fare better than multiplatform programs on Windows.

i have used openoffice (on linux) for a few years for school and stuff. it use to be bloated and really slow, but now they've gotten it to where its just bloated and slow. the macro system makes me really angry sometimes and i've nearly broken my monitor throwing things.
abiword is pretty nice for any application that microsoft word is used for. you should check it out sometime,
