I'm really new to the game and I am enjoying it so far. I have what could be a really easy question to answer, or it could spawn a debate. I'm looking for more of an axiom.
In just random encounter Pvp, what ship types tend to dominate? I have heard of people pvping in frigates. But when I look at the numbers, it would seem bigger is better. It would be pretty hard to take down a cruiser or something in a frigate with 3 turrets/launchers right? I just don't see where the dmg output would come from. I'm just kinda trying to lay out a skill template and I have no idea how far to aspire (as far as ship size). Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

What you choose to pvp in depends on a few things, namely your income, your skills, and your preferences. Nearly all the ship types can be useful in pvp, from frig wolfpacks, to small mixed gangs, up to of course fleet battles involving capital ships.

Well that makes sense I guess. I guess I am thinking in more of a 1 on 1 situation.

It all depends who you're against. There are Interceptor pilots that can take out battleships, but would lose to destroyers. There are BS pilots who can NOS you to death, but are useless against Minmatar ships.
In EVE, every ship has its usees and its pitfalls. In other words, try everything and see what sticks with you -----------------------------------------------

Well if you wan't to be uncreative and assume your fighting noobs then generally
Shuttle<rookie ship<frigate<destroyer/AF/Interdictor<cruiser<Battle Cruiser<Recon Ship<Battle Ship = Heavy Assualt Cruiser<Curse/Pilgrim< Command Battle Cruiser < Carrier = Dreadnought<MotherShip<Titan< Marcus TheMartin
Thats if your fighting complete idiots though by the way. So you obviously need to remember in this game you are up against a human mind that is able to react accordingly to your actions/ships/setups so there is no best ship Best Dressed Corp of 2006 and 2007! -Marcus TheMartin

Well I am definitely not looking to be uncreative. This game has a ton of information and no answer comes easy it seems. Clearly a lot of things are possible, I'll just try some stuff out and get killed a bunch of times I guess, haha.

Hey guys, first post since joining a few weeks ago, but this topic has intrigued me.
I'm a pretty huge theory-crafter. I do like the fact that Eve seems to have struck a good balance between ships and that there is no "cookie-cutter" ship that everyone should use.
However, since I haven't really left secure space yet (been concentrating on learning skills at first, so my combat skills are lacking and, as such, my ship/weapon selection is poor), I was wondering what someone would typically encounter in pvp space. I realize it is rather open-ended, but what would a solo player typically run up against? What steps can that person take to ensure better odds in surviving/winning the encounter?
I've done some reading up on tanking in Eve, and I get the feeling that the tank setups on frigates are a bit lacking. Slots are limited and the pool of shield/hull is rather small, so my first thought is that a cruiser is superior for pvp in general.
Thoughts?

A HAC is not as good as a BS. A BS can outclass any HAC, unless if it has an insanly bad fitting.
It should be "Battleship = Command Battle Cruiser" -----------------------

The situation you encounter tends to dictate which ship type is the best for pvp so it's better to find which ships and/or race suits your play style the most and learn to use it. As you get better you'll learn to dictate how favourable a given situation will be for your ship and setup and whether to engage or not (doesn't mean you won't make mistakes but that's half the fun).

Your best bet is just to fly what you can afford to lose, and know when to run. For example, HACs are the undisputed kings of solo ganking- but are way too expensive and high skill for even most vets to fly on a whim. BS's are very nifty for solo work (providing you fit it in a "take on all comers" setup, and don't encounter any specialised BS killers) but are again, pretty expensive for just some casual PvP. Personally, I still like to muck around in cruisers and AFs the most- a PvP fitted Thorax or Vexor, flown right, is a sight to behold, for only a few million. Of course if you come across any BSs, BCs, HACs, etc., you should be preapred to run like a startled gazelle. -----------------------------------------------
