I recently lost two battleships whilst running missions because of my drones ... well, it could be argued poor piloting by me, I'm prepared to take that
In both cases the story was the same. I'd been jammed and scrambled, my drones (which I'd launched to kill frigates) locked onto a ship a fair few km away, from a spawn I hadn't aggro'd. This then aggro's the whole room, which means death for me ... boo
This got me thinking that it would be good to get a few more options for controlling your drones. Stuff like:
- The ability for drones to only attack frigates
- Drones act as a group, all targetting the same ship
- Automatically attack any ship doing (x) EW on you
- Kill all enemy drones
These could be set up as rules for your drones to obey in addition to nominating targets, maybe you have the ability to specify 5 rules and can switch your drones between the active rule sets?
I think that the only argument against this would be that against a jammed ship in pvp, that drones would become pretty powerful. In a 1 on 1 situation though, the drones would normally just attack anyway, so I don't think that this changes the dynamic. In group engagements I think that it could just serve to make fleet engagements more interesting.
Feel free to shoot it down (or even tell me it's not a new idea )

Oh almost forgot, new drone type. Salvage drones ... please. Anything to make salvage less of a mind numbingly boring task

There are a number of things many dronemasters would love to see done with drones.
It's been years, and we're still waiting.

Edited by: Reggie Stoneloader on 10/01/2007 01:30:11 Drones are a weapon type, not autonomous wingmen. The ability to give them commands like, "Kill enemy drones" or "target frigates" or "find the guy that's scrambling me and kill him" would make drones more competent than a lot of players are, and with the lag resistance they enjoy, combined with the lag they generate, a new, horrible era of EvE combat would be ushered in under a cloud of smoke from the charred Tranquility server cluster.
If you want your drones to attack something, you need to identify it, target it and command your drones to engage it.
If you get ECM jammed and want your drones to stop fighting, scoop them.

You know...this holds true on so many levels, that I would be willing to forego any additional commands, so long as the current system is fixed.
And herein the problem lies. Many of the proposals for drone UI improvements are for the sake of easy workarounds to the common problems faced by many drone users due to simply poor AI.
The simplest solution to this would be to simply grant more than 2 line of coding for drone AI.

Hell i would forego everything else just for the ability to order my drones to fight as ONE wing isntead of the random targetting they do at times...
Though another ability that would be REALLy nice would be to limit the Range in which they roam (say maybe working like the "keep at range/orbit" abilities, where you can just plot in an operation range.
There are missions where i never let out a single drone, cause they are not just a liability but straight up suicidal to use, when they inevitably aggro another spawn.
(I'm not a drone carrier pilot though, Just use them to blow up the stuff that's toosmall for my megapulses)
