I came across a HAC today in a relatively small system (2 Fathom probes can completely blanket the system) and he was safespotted very near a planet. He was not (to my knowledge) moving because he was always on a 15 degree scan of this planet, but not a 5, I scanned every 10 second or so while probes were running. Now, I wasted 4 Fathom probes on thies guy findign absolutely nothing. I KNOW he was within 10au of the location that I dropped the probes in, and I amr elatively sure that he did not warp anywhere (if he did, it was not far because he was always at a 15 to that planet.
After wasting 4 probes on him, I have up, I got about 12 scans with all those probes, no luck on any one. So does anyone know how he was able to evade this?

He was probably in a deadspace location (doing a mission)
Chances of finding someone in deadspace are a lot smaller, hence the need to run many scans sometimes. You can turn off overview settings and use the narrowed down angle. If you pick him up with npc shipwrecks on scanner you can be fairly sure it's a mission.

Edited by: Shan Juan on 10/01/2007 02:28:36 ECCM possibly? I remember reading that recons would be difficult to locate due to their natural high sensor strenght. I think it was in a pre revelation blog by TomB?

There are sections of space that can't be probed. I've ran across them, in addition to that, you might need a snoop probe with high probe skills if the target has ECCM fit on his ship. ECCM will make a ship very hard to probe out. --

You can't see wreck, rats nor cans on scanner. So he's probably missioning. - Got grief?

Aye you can see wrecks. There are 2 reasons why you probably couldn't find him 1 he had eccm 2 he was in a deadspace area
Takes a long time to find either one but it can be done You think 4 is bad? Took me an hour to probe out 5 ships with snoops in a deadspace. The darn thing was 50 000 km away from me I could have just flown to the darn thing and it would have been faster :/
