On a seperate note (after calming down), with the reworking of the graphics engine will size come into play. By this, I mean will capital ships really be...well, BIG. Or, in another example, will my assault ship be made smaller, instead of being 1/4 the size of a battleship?

Sweet bunch of blogs, was about time!
I'm glad to hear your focus is on improving current content, software and hardware in Rve 2-3 instead of adding new stuff.
The new warfare ideas sound great, I like the other stuff too...

Hmm - wasn't factional warfare supposed to be part of Revelations 2 as well? Has it been pushed back for retooling - making better? (one hopes)
Best of luck bringing back the relevance of smaller groups to large-scale warfare - it's the nature of the beast for people to blob up in any situation.
Hopefully "heat" also opens the door to subsystem / module targeting. IMO that'd bring back a huge relevance to small ships if handled properly.

Originally by: Oveur Small fleets are fun. Roaming around, no need to wait for people, just gather some friends and start some skirmishes, deep infiltrations, war of attrition, mischief, mayhem and soap. This is achieved by adding more ways to affect player infrastructure, not just the only option of full destruction.
Couldnt agree more
Originally by: Oveur We're not safisfied with the current performance of EVE, we're not happy with the state of some features and we want to improve a lot of other aspects of EVE.
You do not know how happy that makes me feel. -all this time I believed it was delusion, sorry for the negative term
Fantastic read, though some repetition
I have a question though. Q: What would be the icing on the cake to get a mayhem and soap! player in a capital ship?

Anti blob ftw, although i am not sure how you will implement it, i am sure you have something in mind, because yeah sure, we can take out their extra 5 research slots on that outpost with our 5 man gang, alternatively, we could take it out 20 times faster with our 100 man gang, how you avoid that i am really interested in hearing :D
On the whole, you have my 2 accounts for the forseeable future though ;)

Yay I deserved a cookie!
On a serious note the whole heat thing is something that really isnt doing anything for me except stir up negative thoughts. I would stay clear of it, not add it at all. I havent heard a single player who is looking forward to it. Yes heat sounded awesome three years ago, but now...
Too much of a pitfall to be honest and no added fun (imagine a lag situation, you know one like we often have in large engagements, where your modules take a couple of minutes to online or offline and apply that to heat... Petition: I revved my warp core to 200% with the intention of doing this for 5 seconds something I know is normally safe to do yet due to lag it only responded after 10 seconds and then i found myself sitting in my pod because my ship blew up. GM response: the server logs show no proof of this. Player: quits eve.). I say no to heat.
Also don't rest your laurels on the PvE side and esp. missioning. Getting the same missions over and over is lame (yes i know some people like the predictability), give us mission diversivication. 10 fold the number of different missions. Create autogenerated once off missions using the new tools such as triggers etc. After killing the Thief 100 times you would imagine that that lame agent corp would finally have hired some inhouse security.
Big and I mean BIG absense in the whole context of optimizing etc is the drone interface. Pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase add in a complete revamp of the drone interface (let logistic drones work on yourself as well, doesnt make sense that they cant, let me insta abbandon my group of drones so i can send out another group of them, and many many other suggestions have been put forward by the community including a example of a how a new drone interface could look). The current drones interface is also a major pain due to the new fleet system (brilliant).
Finish the ingame map browser, if I choose flatten map then please give me a flattened map (2D) aka like the 2D offline maps everyone now uses, would be nice if you choose show location that it would actually show that location as well.
All other changes I'm looking forward too with great longing, if it werent for that dreaded heat thing.

Two more suggestions:
1. One place in settings menu to trully optimize the hell out of eve (turn stuff on/off instead of playing with hidden options in ini files etc), centralize it all.
2. Redo chat client (takes way too much room now plus you need to split your local off in order to survive), i.e. the chat client mechanism DAOC used I was pretty happy about because it allowed you to be active on all channels without missing anything going on and even have private convos mixed in between whilst having a tabulated filter (mistypes due to wrong slash command was often hilarious). ----------------------------------------------- The BIG Lottery |

edit: I do think Heat could be pretty interesting for players looking for more control in EVE combat. However I really hope that it doesn't happen until the full ramifications of rigs and boosters are analyzed, digested, and adjusted.
One gets the feeling right now that they were introduced a little haphazardly. * * * In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Quote: And talking about capital ships, the rumour is that ORE have one in the works. Unofficial sources state that it's not a miner per se, but is something every industrialist wants to have in his backyard.
Capital class Industrial?... Hmm
not a miner, not a hauler as we have freighters but an iccle cheepo freighter would be nice, mobile refinary? or factory I suppose but POS's do that, Ooo it could be a gang support vessel, like a battlecruiser gang leader for mining ops.
Capital class.... Uh oh, i fear for empire usage, dont make it a jump drive ship please
and all the other stuff looks great... die blob die
fewer more uber npc's.. Is this upgrading from frigates to destroyers as this actually made many missions easier last time due to the increase in sig radius. Or are you making each npc more uber within its own ship class?

Valid question. Planets need to be about 10x as big at the very least - Most gas giants in eve are smaller than earth when cruising through in an interceptor. Also, suns are ridiculously small and should be increased in size about 100x at the very least.
Then there's stations - they should actually get a little smaller, especially the inside. It's ridiculous to see your frigate fitting in an office window, really. The logic of capital ships docking etc can be looked at, but the strange difference in size of the inside and outside of a station should be adressed in any case, aswell as station sizes themselves. They are bigger than titans, which is already strange imho :P

This blog scares me a lot. Somehow this "need for speed" kick seems all about making the game more complicated where its complicated enough, and taking away a lot of the richness we come to EVE to experience in the name of "insta gratification."
--I'm not going to say much more about heat, because I don't think I'm alone in saying its not a good change. It just seems to me to complicate things much more than it adds in terms of gameplay balance, combat fun, and tactical play.
--While it is true that, "there are 4999 other solar systems with asteroid belts out there," other than Jita, there are much fewer than 4999 other solar systems that have similar characteristics to Jita, ie, good belts with high security ratings that have common ores like Veldspar, Scordite, Pyroxeres, etc. Even fewer are belts that haven't been ravaged by macromining Covetors, who strip the belts bare in a matter of hours. I'm about as far away from Jita as you can get (Ithar in southern Kador region), and its hard to find a system around there without at least five pilots there that have been mining away for hours. The only thing that doesn't make it a serious problem is that there are at least a few belts that haven't been touched before downtime. My fear is that if you reduce the belts in areas you consider to be overcrowded, you'll just make it harder to find any highsec system to mine legitimately. While going to lowsec is always an option, lowsec ores alone cannot feed the enormous appetite for Tritanium, Pyrite, and Mexallon; minerals that have been going through the roof in terms of price, despite more ores being mined in lowsec and alliance space than ever before.
--It seems to me that this "world-shaping" kick is violating what you led me to believe EVE was about, and that is a real living, breathing universe. Yes, I'm talking about the Interbus delivery service. While I understand that you want to defuse market hubs like Jita, there are better ways to go about doing it. For example, you can put up more research slots in outlying systems, more manufacturing slots, have better refining equipment, alter the supply and demand of trade goods coming in and out of the systems, move around agents, and create new jump gates. You talked about a lot of these, and I say pursue those before this Interbus "insta-teleport your goods" option. Regional middlemen and local traders make a living at running around grabbing 1 million tritanium here, 750,000 tritanium there to fill the big 20 million buy order. Its one of the things that work well, adds to the realism, keeps the price of commodities stable, and makes the regions more than silly WoW style theme parks.
I'm sure someone is going to say that the proposed direction is a step forward for EVE, but I see it as a step toward the sort of simple, linera, shallow, WoW insta-action games we all came to EVE to avoid. If you want to nerf Jita, then nerf Jita. But don't change the way trading works, or the economy works, just because its not "iconic and EVE Warsy" enough.

This year, everything we do is determined by the need for speed initiative. We're improving current content out there, replacing 100 NPCs with 10 bigger ones. This doesn't only improve server performance 10-fold, it also improves client performance considerably.
Optimizing deadspace structures, utilizing fewer structures and optimizing environmental effects have the same effects. I'm sure some people enjoy the pretty slide-shows and taking out cruiser after cruiser, but hey. It's time to bring out some heavy-hitting NPCs, they just might get a clue and bring out some capital ships.
Just a thought; the current NPC ships are extremely underpowered, attibutes-wise when compared with typical ship of human player (in terms of damage dealt, tanking ability etc) ... this is why there's so many of them per spawn, but maybe rather than replace "100 ships with 10 bigger ones" a more logical solution would be to replace "100 ships with 10 stronger ones" (with bounties adjusted accordingly, obviously)
I.e. pit a frigate player against also frigate-sized enemy but one that has attributes comparable to player ship... etc. Otherwise replacing large groups with smaller groups of bigger ships will only make missions and such easier, than anything.... since larger weapons have significant problems hitting smaller targets. So what up to now was snoozefest of getting through spawn of 5 frigates that pose no challenge even together, under the current model of change would become of snoozefest of getting through hp amount of single cruiser that also poses no challenge because well, it can't even hit player frigate... etc, on all levels.
And well, seeing capital ship in every second belt or lvl.4 mission (if you keep this 'replace a lot with few bigger' all way up to battleships) ... is going to get ridiculous rather quick >>;

I absolutely loved the anti-blob part, as well as the part where he pointed out how much more fun small, roaming gangs are. I wasn't sure if the dev team just loved blobs or if it was a sign of the times, but now I know they're on the same wavelength as me, so I can expect the game to become more fun, not less.
