It is indeed a nice improvement, though it seems the formatting and smiley buttons are still in the old color scheme

I too like the new look, but the skill level display is still out of whack (related to Learning-skills affecting required points for level) showing several skills below their actual level (and yes, they've been there for quite some time). --- Implement forum search already!!! |

Wow my negative reply to the new site got deleted. Thats really something, anyways I will repeat it again lets see if this one gets deleted too.
The redisign was developed by noobs no question about it. Old design in many ways was better but nothing to write home about either. It is good to see new content and the change itself, at least they alive and doing something.

Pann said she was busy doing something, that was her reasoning for not being around as much the past week or so. Perhaps this is what she was doing

Edited by: Kenneth Lay on 03/12/2003 19:16:09 Pojo, your lack of knowledge on web design doesn't surprise me.
The old site had so many web no-no's it wasn't even funny.
Like the navigation on the left was all graphics...that is what 2k a link times 15 links. Not to mention the rollovers. That isn't 4k per link (minimum) times 15. That's 60K going back and forth from their server each time you hard reload a page.
That's a lot of bandwidth being sucked out. The old design was fixed...limits the content area and what can be placed (size wise) in it. This one is 100% expandable...so they can place anything in it and it will be very difficult to break the design of it.
Granted, the only thing this new site that is bad is it isn't 800x600 compatible, but I don't care...I don't view sites in that view. _______________________ CEO of Enron Corporation Enron Corporation (15 members of friends) |

Edited by: Pojo on 03/12/2003 22:16:43 Edited by: Pojo on 03/12/2003 21:45:19 I didn't say the coding sucked you damn noob, i said the DESIGN sucked. When you learn the difference then you can give me advice from your hours of experience in the field. I haven't even looked at the code so for all I know its all crap too but frankly I don't care as there is nothing I can do to fix it. Please don't talk about web development as if you understand something about it. Your 2K figures are all wrong to begin with, most small pics like that are in fact only few hundred bytes in size. Its the way your hard drive is formated and the os you have that lists it in K. If you get properties for the pics you can see the actual size. Next problem is that all current browsers cache the pictures so they only have to be sent one time per new client. It will only be recent if the client cache has been cleared or they never visited the site before. For 95% of the visitors it never gets reloaded it simply gets pulled from the cache on their hd.
Sure having text link is even less code but you talking about a very little real impact on bandwidth or user wait times. There are certain effects and font styles that you cant do with text. Not to mention if you wish to freeze the page layout and navigation so people cant screw it up with using larger/smaller fonts in their own browser.
Bleh I dont feel like explaining all this to you lets just leave it at what we know so far. You dont know crap about web coding or design for that matter.

Edited by: Kenneth Lay on 04/12/2003 15:34:10 Web design and Web code go together. If you want to talk about just design...then you are talking about a brochure or magazine cover.
lol...neither do you.
heading back to code and design more websites for my job, while i'm at lunch i'll see you ok? I'll take a big mac with fries _______________________ CEO of Enron Corporation Enron Corporation (15 members of friends) |

If you think design does not apply to web sites on its own then we done talking. You should feel really lucky that someone hired you for "design" work.
For anyone else thats interested in the real world applications this is how it goes. Normally first you make a design of the web site taking into account web limitations. After you have initial customer apporval then you figure out the best way to implement your design in code. Depending on type of features the site has you may need to use asp, php, java, flash etc. Even then you have to take into the account where and who will host and maintain the site after. I had more then one occasion where people would insist on asp for next to everything just because they had people that could maintain it after we are done. There are always some things that will be very hard to make viable in code and the design tends to scale back just a little to make it feasable (bandwith, server laods, storage limitations). Of course if you have nothing to cut from the design then you never pushed it very much to begin with.

Edited by: Kenneth Lay on 05/12/2003 16:03:15 Ok, I can see we would never see eye to eye.
w/o code your design would stay a PSD forever. And I get designs from freelance all the time. Do you know how much tweaking I have to do to make them a better "WEB" design? It is about placement and what works. It might look good in a jpg for the client, but there is always a disclaimer saying things could change.
Why? Cause it can be a good stand-alone design but a BAD web design... _______________________ CEO of Enron Corporation Enron Corporation (15 members of friends) |
