I've just bought an amarr destroyer (Coercer), and I'm wondering what the next level up is. I want a type of ship that will be able to handle medium laser turrets and will have decent defensive and offensive capabilities.
Thanks for the help in advance. -Firos.

Most likely a Cruiser of some sort.
And really, a Destroyer isn't required to use before a Cruiser. Many people jump straight from Frigates to Cruisers and never use them.

Depends how much isk you have, but try to go for the maller, it has a resist bonus and plenty of armor also has 5 turrets

a cruiser There's 3 choices for Amarr for cruisers. The Omen, a no-nonsense heavy hitter(at least intended that way) designed for delivering as much damage as possible in a short time. cap bonus on med lasers and Rate of Fire bonus reflect that. It does have issues however fullfilling that role because it has problems actually fitting the guns. The Arbitrator, in these times where nosferatu's are really powerfull tools to disable opponents it can be a powerfull ship because it has a drone damage bonus and as such has room in the highs for nosferatu, while still having respectable damage from drones. The Maller, with it's armor resistance bonus armor tanks on the Maller can be quite tough if you fit it for tanking. Alternative fit is to go with as much damage as possible and because it has 5 turrets it matches the Omen in dps output(assuming lvl 4 cruiser) while having a stronger passive tank then the Omen. That's about it for Amarr cruisers afaik.

Yeah, thanks. I took a look at the cruisers, and after I supe up my destroyer a bit, and train cruiser skills, I'll save up for a cruiser of some sort.
Much appreciated. -Firos.

I recommend you skip destroyers and go right to cruisers, destroyers are a dead end. CCP doesn't want them to play any useful role in the game outside insta-popping frigs in L1 missions. So don't waste time training up Destroyers lvl 5.

Enjoy your destroyer... Try save up 5m for an Omen or Arbitrator and train up so you can use medium equipment and fit a nice cruiser... You can also go for a Maller but It's probably much faster to get a tier 2 cruiser and then save up for the tier 3 doing level 2 missions (destroyers aren't that good in lv 2 missions).

you'll also find that many cruiser can operate quite nicely with small t2 guns and an uber tank so you may be ready to fly one before u'd think. thorax and maller are 2 very good examples of this.

Edited by: Firos on 12/01/2007 00:03:42 Silly 2d 18 hours training my frigates to level 4, going to have to get an implant (if I can find a bargain perhaps) or train up my stats. After I get my frigates to L4, I'll get a cruiser and I'll try and get med laser turrets and see where I go from there.

I just think of destroyers as frigates with much more firepower. |

They can't tank worth...anything. It's just not worth it. IMO, the only exception is when you just started the game, like the OP did. This is because they are inexpensive to purchase and outfit when compared to cruisers. I went from frigate to destroyer and loved it. Noobs don't have the skills or knowledge to make frigates un-killable.
OP: IMO, your next ship should be either a Maller or an Arbitrator. Both are excellent cruisers. The Maller is more expensive, but the Arbitrator requires decent drone skills to fully utilize. The rest of the Amarr cruisers aren't very useful even for seasoned veterans of the game, much less new players like you.

Since Kali, destroyers can tank. They got almost three times as much extra HP % as other tech 1 ships.
They don't do it as well as a cruiser, but they are by far not the guns mounted on rice paper they were before. Give it a try sometime, you'll find them to be quite okay now.

I'd say...
Frigate > Destroyer Cruiser > BattleCruiser (Since they fill the role of cruiser killers)
so the _logical_ progression is destroyer > battlecruiser.

...and a signature radius the size of a planet by comparison to a frig (Rifter - base sig 35, Thrasher base sig - 75)!
I spent a while trying to find a use for a Thrasher and gave up...then came Salvaging. Finally the destroyer has a niche!

Thanks for the info. I made 4.6m today in 8 hours or so, which is atleast enough to buy one of the less expensive cruisers (because the Maller takes L3 cruisers, or last time I checked it was), or is atleast not very far off. Still 1D 19H until I can actually train cruisers though (L4 frigates), should have a lot more money by then, which can pay for new mods, the ship and the insurance.

CCP is too scared to give Destroyers what they really need for fear of the AF lobby going ape****. unless we can squelch the AF lobby the destroyer will never get to where it should be.

Destroyers are good for adding 100-200 dps to a fleet at the cost of about 3 million isk. They also make good interceptor and pod poppers.
