I got a new flat panel screen yesterday, a Samsung 204B, which I am very pleased with, but for one thing, which is some quite bad colour ôbandingö in games like Eve. ItÆs quite noticeable in darker gradual colour gradients, such as the nebulas and gas clouds.
I was wondering if this was a normal thing with lcd screens, or whether it is a problem with my monitor. I didnÆt notice it before on my old CRT screen.
Cheers

I'm also seeing a lot of this in EVE, but havn't noticed it in any other dark game - dark Oblivion dungeons look fantastic for example (I havn't been looking too hard, but if it'd been this bad I think I'd have noticed).
I did a quick comparison to my brothers CRT, although not in a very dark system, and I only noticed the difference looking hard up close. I do remember seeing slight banding in certain systems even with my old screen, a really good but way too big and heavy CRT.
I've got a Samsung 225BW, it's got slightly lower contrast than the 204B so if anything it should be worse for me.

I've adjusted some of the monitor settings to turn some of the vibrancy options off, and it looks a bit better. I compared it with my machine at work and I could see it there too, so I think I'm just seeing these things more now because I'm looking for them :P Although I think these things are more noticable on an LCD screen.
I'm wondering if Eve uses 16 bit textures for some of it's backgrounds. I've noticed the same thing on some of the sky textures in WoW.

Hi! "Banding" is the result of the refresh rate of your monitor becoming out of synchronization with the frames-per-second of your game. The easiest and least performance-taxing way to reduce banding is to increase the refresh rate of your monitor. However, LCD monitors do not have this ability and most are locked in at a refresh rate of 60Hz. Refresh rates of CRT monitors are generally much higher, mine clocks in at a max of 160Hz.
There is another way to fix this though, and you may have even heard of it before: its called vertical synchronization or "v-sync" for short. What this does is synchronize the FPS of the game with the refresh rate of the monitor. Unfortunately you'll probably take an unacceptable performance hit by turning on v-sync....
Say your refresh rate is 60Hz (which is probably is) and EVE is running at 60 FPS, even with v-sync on, the game will continue to run at 60 FPS. But if your frame-rate drops below 60, v-sync will automatically divide your refresh rate in half and use that as the new frame-rate: 30 FPS. So heres a little chart for your 60Hz machine:
No v-sync - FPS: 60 Actual FPS: 60 V-sync - FPS: 60 Actual FPS: 60
No v-sync - FPS: 59 Actual FPS: 59 V-sync - FPS: 59 Actual FPS: 30 <---29 FPS difference
No v-sync - FPS: 29 Actual FPS: 29 V-sync - FPS: 29 Actual FPS: 15 <---14 FPS difference
So, at least in my opinion, the massive performance decrease is not worth a little banding. But if you do decide to turn on v-sync you will have to open up your "prefs.ini" file in the EVE\cache folder and set advancedDevice to 1. This will cause a few new pull-down menus to open up in the Graphics tab of the EVE main menu. From there set Present Interval to "Interval one" and you will have enabled v-sync.
Again, I wouldn't recommend v-sync, and I personally play with an LCD screen, but anyway that's the deal.
Good luck!

No, that is completely unrelated. "Banding" means that colors are not being displayed smoothly because somewhere in the rendering process there is a gradient that is not being calculated in full 32-bit color.
What you're talking about is a totally different phenomenon with a completely different name.
And the problem of the frame drop you described does not even exist in modern machines because of triple buffering.

No, that's tearing.
