David Beckham, formerly of Real Madrid and Manchester United signed a 5-year 250 Million (USA Dollars) contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy of the MLS. (Major League Soccer  )

He is popular.
He's cashing in on that. He's sitting the bench for Real Madrid, the Brits don't want him back, might as well come to America and be the best player in our league. 
Several illegal aliens are rumored to have already bought season tickets for the upcoming Galaxy campaign. "Footy" is by far the most popular sport in Mexico, and they long-ago invaded any State close to the border.
The Galaxy are supposed to go on a Asian tour next year. Beckham is real big with the Tanooki Mario crowd.
Also, Victoria wants to go to LA and party. She wants to get her carrer back in the lights. She's rumored to be the new voice of Lisa Simpson starting next year. Several info-mercial's starring her are also in the works.
And there's always the possibility of a ill-conceived celebrity sex-tape scandal starring the Beckham's.
Personally, I think if Pele and Beckenbauer (amoung others) on the Metro-Stars in the 1970's can't get America to watch Soccer... Beckham probably won't either.
