Edited by: Teitan on 15/01/2007 20:08:12 This is an example of how not to run an auction.
The player posts an auction with a start price, a hidden reserve and a stated buyout. with a closing date and time. very good. well laid out.
I was the only person who bid... and did so 20 m above the start bid.
less than half an hour after the auction ended I sent an evemail to the player asking for information.
4 hours later he sends me a reply saying the reserve was 300m and he sold it to a friend.... when I told him I would have given him more... he asked me why I didn't bid higher then if I would have paid more.
since the reserve was never revealed; nor was there any management of the auction to inform the only bidder that their bid was appreciated but was below the still hidden reserve... the auction went through to close without a winner... and the only bidder left hanging.
If you want people to be responsible and commit to these business transactions you need to treat the contract and the parties involved with respect. Manage your auctions.
Can you believe this guy asked me why I didn't bid higher, against myself - the only bidder, as justification for selling it without a single word to me... the only person who took the time and effort to watch his auction and bid??
If you post an auction: Manage it! Your daily bump is an opportunity to provide information and to encourage people to agree to the price you have in mind; or better it. If you have bidders and a hidden reserve has not been reached as the auction winds down into its final hours either reveal the reserve or at least let the bidders know the reserve has not been met. If your auction closes take the time to contact the bidders who have won and tell the highest non-winning bidder what the reserve was and give them the option to pay it... after all they gave you their time to bid and to watch your auction. No, you don't have too. No, it isn't the way it has to be done, but it is good business and can go a long way to helping you build a good reputation/character.
