Howdy all,
I've been away from Eve for almost a year and since I currently don't have time to commit to a major corp I figured I'd just hang out in Empire and do some trading and mission running for a while as a member of an NPC corp.
I know about suicide gank squads and their danger to indys, but how about a freighter? The things are so darn tough I don't really see that they are in danger in Empire from anything other than a rare large squad of battleships (as long as they aren't in a corp at war).
Am I correct in this? How often are NPC-corp-member freighters ganked these days? Is it still safe to fly around unescorted in one?

No one will be able to suicide gank your freighter in highsec, so you should be safe. Dont go into low sec though.

You'd have to throw a whole lot of BS at a freighter to kill it before Concord popped em all, but if you ever ended up at war, or in lowsec, even a solo BS could take you out easily.

It's fairly possible to suicide a freighter, altho it'd take a load of ships to do it.
The reason noone has done it so far is that freighters don't drop loot. If they would, it would probably make economic sense to suicide the ones carrying the really nice stuff.

A while ago it was proposed freighters would drop cans.
In that case it could be profitable to gank a freighter, if the gain outweighed the loss.
The losses were calculated to be about 15 to 20 suicide TORP RAVENS, but this was before the hitpoint increase of both the raven and the freighter.
Today your freighter doesnt drop a can, so only if DESTROYING your cargo and your freighter is worth more than say 2 billion isk to a well organised group, then maybe your freighter could be ganked... This would only happen if you're in some alliance, carrying a high value asset like a great T2 BPO, or a full set of built Data Interfaces, and an enemy alliance knew about this and set out to deprive your alliance of such a high value asset.
Isn't it great being a skill collector?
