Ahoy
I am fairly sure that a Tornado sitting outside a busy mission station with an eye to take down juicy Tengus would be equipped with 1400s, gyros and maybe a TE or two. Is that about right? Pop goes the ugly Caldari bird, and out drop the shinies.
However, what I am less sure of is what (if) Tengu setup could be used to protect against this sort of gank (assuming a lone Tornado pilot), without totally gimping it's PVE ability. The best I could do (in my own head, not using EFT as my moustache forbids it) was a setup with two Invuln IIs and an LSEs - I get about 20k EHP. Is that enough to resist a Tornado gank?

20k EHp is more than a tornado alpha.
But think of :
1) you can instalock with a tornado, so you must be fast to turn on the invus
2) almost all gankers will scan their prey before, and nobody with a brain will try to solo-gank a tengu with a LSE. They will just bring a friend or wait 10mn for the next tengu to undock.

Could always setup/share a POS in system, drop tengu in POS, pick up new mission in a rifter, switch back at pos..
Can also be done with an Orca I believe..

Keep in mind, that if they are willing to gank you on station, they may be willing to probe you out and do it in a mission (depending on sec status of system, this could mean an extra volley).
So if you see a flight of high alpha ships with sebo's running on the undock, go to another mission hub and keep your shinies.

This does L4s without breaking a sweat, costs far less than many Tengus, and has 35k EHP and 600 DPS. Change amps for mission resists or just run it omni-tank. Turn on the DC and invuln as your first actions after leaving station if you want to be safer, or use insta undock BMs as suggested previously. |

you do know that they can't lock you for 20 secs after u undock provided you dint do anything silly right?
So easy way is to set up insta undock for your hub and few bookmarks around the gates and you'll be good.
The best solution if you ask me is to use as little faction as needed. No one will bank your tengu for the 3 CN bcs and the pith b type SSB u have on it. |

Arty Apoc only costs 80M or so.. If I could net 81M from the tengu, then I would shoot at it.
Hanging around for 20 seconds just gives me time to pre-overheat guns (for the 2nd volley, if you didn't pop from the first, in .6 or below), and spam the lock target button... Its not like I need a second volley. As a previous member of the 0rphanage that was the attitude I hoped for.. and many tengu's got roasted because of that very idea of 'safety'.

A pair of tornados can do it. I know, because it has happened to me. Well, not tornados, but a maelstrom + arty apoc.
Assume 50m for the tornado hull, then maybe 30m for fittings = 80 x 2 = 160m. Most of the L4 mission running tengus will be rocking some CN and / or deadspace gear. Find one that is really loaded and you have yourself some easy isk. The trick is to scan the target down, then be waiting in ambush on the other side of a gate that the tengu goes through. As soon as the tengu de-cloaks on the other side, lock and fire before it manages to turn on hardeners.
This is why I don't fly tengus in hi sec anymore...way too easy.  |

There is a happy medium for the Tengu.
The fit I posted does have some faction goodies on it; around 250m worth. Assuming 50% drop, that's 125m profit potential.
If I don't have my DC and Invuln II on, I have 22.5k EHP. That means 2x ~9500 alpha strikes from 2 Maelstroms probably wouldn't kill it. So you need 3 to attack it, for a total of 35m ISK x 3 = 105m. The problem is, if I am careful and turn the mods on before they hit, my EHP jumps to 31k w/DCII and 35k w/Invuln II, which means a 3 ship attack would probably fail, so you really need a 4th on standby. That bumps the price up another 35m, for a total of 140m to have a chance at netting 125m on average.
That and not everyone is willing to dump their security status for little profit potential. Oh and that 125m isn't guaranteed. If the best stuff doesn't drop... yeah. See all those tengus flying around not being ganked? That's the proof that you can fly them just fine without piling on a ton of goodies to tempt the gankers. |
