So i been thinking about this for a while now. Would'nt it be cool if we could add some individuality to our ships with custom paintjobs and the like such as Corp insignias or even symbols for pvp kills like on WW1/2 planes.
I know my 'Cane would look sekseh with some silver 'go faster' racing stripes.
I'm just putting this out there so it would be great to see if there is any player interest.
It obviously throws up all sorts of isssues of how to implement something like this but lets see...
Thoughts...ideas?

Cool? Not really, matters on personal preference. Useful? Not really, paint stripes don't make your ship go faster. Good for performance? Not really, more textures/decals to render...

The idea is quite nice but the problems (lag) that would occur from them would be bad.
Think about it ... when you change system now it takes long enough .. imagine if you had to load in another few hundred textures because everyone had individual paint jobs.
Perhaps they could just have a selection of paint job styles that you can put on your ship ... then they could all be stored locally or something. Problem with that though is that with so many people in the eve universe it wouldnt exactly be individual

I think another MMO has this kinda thing (i.e., customizable skins) but you're the only one that can see them. Everyone else only sees the normal skins and colours. That's to minimize lag, ofcourse. So it's debatable whether it's even a cool thing to add or not.
But don't lose hope. If you've seen the DX10 graphics update that CCP put out during Fanfest, the 'new' graphics engine showed the Alliance Logos on ships. I don't know if that's going to be standard throughout the game or not. |

If it's toggleble like the rest of the "graphic effects", (Except g/d missile explosions...SOMEBODY FIX THIS.) it shouldn't affect your game in heavy combat situations, but would still make stuff pretty if you can handle it.
Sad, but true. |

Even though I'd hate to admit it, I'd have to /agree too.
Although, I remember an old Westwood MMO called Earth and Beyond that allowed you to customize ship color and such. The name of your ship even appeared on the side. Didn't seem to make much of a fuss.

Don't have people upload their own images, rather, give them a few defined areas of the ship they can adjust in color (like in homeworld 2), together with maybe the corporation logo. This will NOT increase bandwidth much, since its only a few binary values per ship (everyone has the colors and logos stored in his own eve installation) and it would allow for some individuality and more a sense of 'MY ship' (and more crying when you lose it).

That's what I was thinking. Something along the lines of, Color 1 = whatever, Color 2 = whatever, Accent Color = whatever. That way ships will keep their schemes (i.e. the Hawk will keep the agressor scheme, but you can tweak the colors). --- Hey hey let's go kenka suru! Taisetsuna mono protect my balls! Yeah exactly what i had in mind..it doesn't have to be the whole ship. Just a few areas and a few basic colour schemes and graphic styles etc.
It just adds to the whole 'its my ship' feel.

Just make it client-side, I know that reduces the coolness factor but you should still be able to see your own awesome paintjob, without laggig EVE.

Besides, how often would you be close enough to actually see someone else paintjob anyway ? -----------------

Point taken...but i see loads of ships docking, undocking. It just adds to the feel of the game. And u can 'look at' ships too.
I see it as an extra visual element to the game that adds more of a 'realistic' feel to it as well.

Perhaps it could be coded to que up a paintjob for a ship only when it's yours (client side) or whenever the "look at" button is pressed. That way only one ship has to be rendered at once, and not everyone over eve will sit in space and "look at" ships, causing lag..

I loved that game. I'm still mad at EA for ruining it (7 years of storyline written out for it.. we only got to see 2 of them )
Haven't bought an EA game since.

I would honestly settle for being able to pick from preset skins for ships, and nothing more. That alone would make me happy.
I'd give my Nighthawk a Blood Raider's paint job, and paint my Raven Mordu's Legion style.

I think it would be cool to see the variety in ships, but I also understand about the lag issue. Perhaps they could put a toggle button in the overview settings. Toggle it on if you want the extra, toggle it off if you don't. I have played a couple other games where the actual custom data was downloaded once and placed in the local data directory, then was accessed in the future with no additional lag. Just another thought.

While a nice idea, I would have sworn I had read somewhere that you use to be able to alter your ship in appearance. It was dropped though, due to lag issues.

Like some stated, it would prolly not help the lag, but yeah i would agree that it would be kewl to be able to change the color on your ship or atleast be able to put ur corp/alliance logo on it.
Actually, i believe this one was on the 'features and ideas' section, lemme check... yeah, it used to be on the drawingboard as well but it seems to be removed now. CCP, let us pay the online shop with Direct Debit!!!

One option I could see is to have preset paint options, based on the various factions (Blood Raider for example). It would give some customizing options within limits. Trade off, of course, would be for the ship to be reverted back to the default appearance when repackaged.

it could totally be turned into an isk sink, where you had to pay a certain amount of isk at an apropriate station to get a paintjob... like a dark blood paintjob which you can only get in dark blood space
and lemme tell you, I'd be the first to get my crusader spraypainted in blood

At the presentation of the new shipmodels last year, there was a "Red Alliance"-icon on some of them. So maybe CCP is trying to do something here, not the "I want my ship in lemon green with pink stripes"-way but the "I'm part of the xyz-alliance"-one?

why is there lag. because insane fleets meet. a normal day on the server, mission running, maybe mining, pvping in small numbers wont cause lag, i think it would be cool. something like trackmania or something, where you can custom paint your cars. :) or forza2.

I like the idea of it being sectionalized - area one = red area 2 = white - this would go on for as many as CCP wanted. The biggest problem with implementation is adding that data into the ship file there's a lot of fugging ships in the game. A toggle would be nice as well.
