I stated to my friend that passive tanking is the way to go for PvP and that active tanking is the way to go for PvE.
Which is the more accected way of shield tanking for PvP?

Depends on the ship tbh. Ferox, drake etc can fit decent passive tanks - some other ships (e.g. Raven) I'd stick with active.

It also depends a lot upon how much Nos you expect to encounter. For most ships, an active tank is more powerful than a Passive one, but active tanks are also more vulnerable to Nos. |

Drake - HP armor tank with EW mods in the mids.
Ferox - Pretty much no tank at all but hits with 250mm rails from 140+km out.

It also depends on what type of PvP you are doing. A Raven Hitpoint passive tank is pretty good for fleets and sometimes smaller gangs. But solo pvp active is much better. Passive shield tanking guide click here |

Edited by: Ryysa on 15/01/2007 11:36:52 For larger fleet battles, having a lot of HP is good. Plates/DCU, stuff like that.
For smaller scale fights, active is nearly always better. The thing is, to make a passive tank nearly as good as an active tank, you must sacrifice everything else.
PvP fights don't last that long usually, but passive tank is very viable in fleet where you must survive the first couple of volleys before you warp.'
Edit: Just read you were only interested in shield tank. I'd say in fleet, you can put some extenders on, but smaller scale stuff, deffo active tank, drake etc works in passive mode, sure, but not for pvp. For PvP you need to have high damage and EW mods to benefit your gang in the mids. If they see that you are tanking like crazy and doing nearly no damage, they'll kill all your friends, then kill you, at that point your tank won't matter much.

Very ship dependant really...
Speaking on behalf of us small Minamatar ship pilots, it's a bit of a moot point for Frigs really as their main use in PvP is tackling which means shield tank of any sort is out of the question. For PvE, you can't beat a passively tanked Rifter IMHO....

Would you mind sharing your PvE Rifter setup? or Link to it in the REV ships thread by any chance? Thanks
