Are there any limits imposed on the lengths of evemails at the moment, and are those limits configurable in some way?
I ask as before Revelations, or at least, before Christmas, I managed to send evemails of, to use one example that I still have a copy of, 3000 characters. Now I get to around 960 characters and the client beeps and refuses to accept any more characters.
My first thought was a difference between corp and individual mail - the 3000 char mail was sent to my corp, whereas the 960 char mail was send to an individual, still in my corp, but only to that one player. However, last night I received an evemail from that same player sent only to me which was much longer than 960 chars. This would also seem to rule out it being one of the mail-related bugs which exist at the moment - for example, read mail becoming unread after using a stargate.
It would therefore seem to be a problem with my client. I may try clearing my cache this evening, but any advice on the problem would be appreciated.

There is a lower limit now which is a pain but you can overcome it by writing your mail in notepad then pasting it into the new evemail. This worked last time I checked.

Ahhhh! The person who mailed me last night did mention pasting the text from another editor. I had assumed this was simply because:
a) the evemail system doesn't have a sent items folder, and you have to manage your own copies b) the text editors in eve are, to put it politely, rubbish.
Thanks for the info,

If you do this, it cuts half the mail off when it gets sent.
Everything outside the character limit just vanishes afaik.

There are also two sides to this bug, that existed even before the 960 character limit got in place. If you send a really long evemail and send it, the person you was sending it to never recieves it. If you send a somewhat long evemail it is recieved but its cropped. Very annoying to send a long mail, you think it was sent but the recipient never gets it, not even a cropped version

say goodbye to c&p from notepad. Have fun sending 4 part evemails.
This is absolutely silly for me to have to send 4 mails to get a point out to my corpies. Is there any logical reason for char limits?

I really would like to know the logic in limiting our mail message length.
There are many times when larger mails are needed.
Hell, just my normal copy/paste of our corp recruiting info is too long to put in.
This really needs to be addressed. Lemme guess. Someone found a way to lag people out with an eve mail so it was "limited" to keep it from being an exploit.

Yes, this has bothered me since it was 'imposed' upon us, the loyal players of EVE. It really, REALLY makes sending lengthy corpmails a hassle when they really shouldn't be! Why do we have to split an email up into 4 or 5 parts when one, longer email would do the job perfectly well?
It's a big irritation, fortunately we're still able to make multi-part emails so the message still gets across, albeit split across a half dozen separate messages.
Fix it damnit!

CCP likes to make our lives as difficult as possible.
Rather than fix the lag, and perfect load balancing they choose to choose to impose char limits on eve mails.

Edited by: voogru on 15/06/2007 02:59:31 Character limits on EVE Mails are counter-productive.
Players end up sending multiple eve mails with the text they would normally send in the first EVE Mail, and that takes up more database space than a single mail would have.
Same with limits on the forums. People just make enough posts to put their whole document.

willing to bet its imposed as a lag preventative measure.
keep in mind all eve-mails are stored server-side, and therefore must be accessed each time you open your mailbox (unless they are downloaded to cache, still, that's one full exchange).
not saying the problem isn't annoying, just pointing out a different way to think about it.

how does that help if people just type the same stuff in 4 mails? That's the same amount of text as well as 4x some kind of overhead as opposed to 1 mail + overhead
