Hi,
I'm fairly sure that this has been covered before somewhere, but I have trouble finding it, so please help me out. :)
I started off my character a couple of weeks ago, intending to be a miner. Now, I do enjoy the miner's life, but I feel that I might want to do a few other things every now and then, and to be a really good (perfect even) miner I'd want to train mining skills non-stop for a couple of months.
So now I ended up pondering creating another account that would be my brawny buddy, focusing on the pew pew area of the game. To cut a long story short:
Is it possible to run two clients at the same time on one computer? I think that there were some problems with a few specific graphics cards that led to CTD's/etc, so for reference, my gfx card is an NVidia 5200. (*gasp*)
I'd like the game to stay at a playable framerate, so please take that into consideration.

I used to run three when my comp worked, and usually had 2 open at all times. If you like multitasking you've found your MMO =o -----

Well, it's a very appealing idea. My first character would go all the way in his mining career, and my second, as his buddy, would be more combat orientated, a mission runner, and perhaps do some hauling, too.
My only worry is the hardware part, and that's what I need some info on.

if you wanna run 3 clients ( doubt you would ) you need mayb a bigger comp hehe, i have 3 ghz dual core, 2gb ram, geforce 7600GT pci-e and with 2 accounts its quiet good but 3 is laggy

personally I'd upgrade the GFX card, also - 1Gb RAM would be useful. 2Ghz Processors will be fine -- BIG Lottery, BIG Deal | RaTTuS @ Skills Showroom

I've heard that dual core CPUs can help quite a lot when running multiple clients - run one client on each core. Another way is to have multiple computers and multiple moniters, but that can make you look too much like a geek :) (not that being a geek is /wrong :P)
My PC can run two or three clients at the same time, but I have to turn the detail right down, and running in windowed mode is quite helpful for switching between the clients.

I don't really aim for a 100% perfect framerate, as long as it's playable (don't intend to go PvP really), I'm happy. My main concern is that I remember there being some distinct difficulties with NVidia cards, clipping errors and such, and something like the background in space turning white, etc.
Or am I making stuff up here?

u don't need a ubercomp to run 2 accounts u can already run 2 on 1 comp with ATI 9800 pro 1gb ram and a decent proc. (AMD64 3000+ or liek 2,6ghz intel) u'll have to turn depth of but those are pretty much minimum requirements to run 2 accounts ok especially if u don't really have to pay mcuh attention to one when u mining in like a barge

i'm running a sempron 2600, 1 gb ram and an ati 9200; running 2 accounts on 2 seperate monitors works ok for me. running 2 accounts on 1 monitor, even with one minimized is laggy as hell! currently, i have 2 computers next to each other, monitor for each, and a laptop for ventrilo/TS

well heres what I run.
have a gf4ti4600 video card 2 gig processor 1 gig of ram
I run ts 2 clients (I can run 2 clients fine but not 2 accounts off 1 client) and can browse the internet at same time.
I run windows at 1280x1024 I run the clients in windows mode at 1024x768
I only lag when I get into a fleet battle or jita.
the window running in the background will have very poor frame rate but the foreground will be fine.
If your computer isn't as good as mine well then maybe it wont work but I would say mine is fairly crappy. Kentucky where the goats roam and the rednecks run free |

I can run up to 4 accounts on 1 computer, but more than 2 is laggy and I wouldn't advise it except for stuff like AFK travelling in empire or mining.

Keep in mind the graphics changes coming this year.
It might not be possible to run multiple accounts with a crappy graphics card when the changes hit

How do people do this?
When I attempt to log on a 2nd client it always shuts down the client i already have connected.
Do I need 2 separate accounts in order to do this? Is it not possible to run 2 characters on the same account concurrently?

You can only have one character online per account at any one time. No running 2 characters on the same account. You can run two clients from the one install with no problems but you will need a second account to have both characters going.
I have the body of a supermodel. I just can't remember where I left it.

It's very easy to run 2 accounts on the same PC. Just make sure you disable sound on one or both instances or you'll run into a nasty memory leak that causes a BSOD.

usualy I run these programs: 2 clients, wintv, icq, winamp, some browser windows, and all the windows crap in the background
thanks to eve launcher I can play both clients on 1280*1024 "full screen". always a good framerate. I have 2 eve installations.

How would I go about using two monitors? One for each client, or perhaps one for a client and one for surfing the net.

It's a good idea generally, but not a requirement. I have a client for my main and a client for my assorted alts, in case one breaks I have one spare if I was in the middle of something. -----

What are you guys setting your graphics options at in Eve? I ask because with two accounts running off of 1 client, I get wicked lag. I have Eve running in 1680 x 1050 res (the native resolution of the two minotrs) with the default settings.
For Hardware I have: 1.5 Gigs of RAM ATI XT1600 Video card 2.6 GHz Intel Core Duo
And yes, it's an iMac (though I'm not sure that even matters, as it's running in XP).

Okay call me thick ... but if I understand to run two clients (or more) all you need is one paid account per logon and have the client intalled in a diffrent folder for each client you want to use?

use 1 install. run them windowed. turn off the game audio.
if you use audio, you will have problems with memory leaks, bsod's, ctd's, std's, and other acronyms.
if you use 2 installs to run 2 clients at the same time, you can/will have problems with severe fps drop when switching clients. this includes running 2 clients on 2 monitors from 2 installs.
read up in the know issues and workarounds section and the later pages in the boost fps thread. lots of good info there
search for the thread, 'running eve in a ramdrive' or some such thing. works wonders...

Use 2 installs. Run them fullscreen on 1 monitor (1 minized at any given time) or 1 windowed or both windowed. Turn on the audio in both, and the music in 1 or both (though music in both makes no sense). You will have no problems of any kind, and both will perform well.
