Well, I found a new way I hadn't been aware of to get my butt blown out of my ship in a speedy fashion. Was wandering at random through hisec and came upon a system that had a bunch of abandoned rookie ships floating around. They didn't have any id, or show any connection to any pilot. The system even asked me if I wanted to board one that was close by. Not thinking to clearly (long day, little sleep), I decided to shoot one. Boom. Hello Concord! Goodbye nice shiny ship I was piloting! Should have seen it coming, but the fact hat the abandoned ships had no player reference threw me - I thought concord would only intervene if you acted against someone else, not abandoned property . Is this a common way to sucker those who aren't thinking straight into getting concorded for salvage? Seems like it might take quite a bit of waiting for somebody who's trigger finger is too itchy... |

No it's not a common way to do anything, they're just abandoned rookie ships. Abandoned ships are still attached to players, and generate a lossmail for them in just the same way as if they were piloted. Why was your safety set on red in hisec anyway? Were you planning on ganking something in your Drake? |

Eh, I was wandering around looking for more of those Frostline rats. Found one, but somebody was already smacking them. At least that's how I started, I sorta lost focus and ended up wandering aimlessly with my brain pretty much turned off. Which is what gets shiny new Drakes blasted... |

Red safety is always stupid in highsec unless you are in warp to a gank target.
You just learned an expensive lesson that I learned for free.

Like Sabriz said there's literally no reason to ever have your safety set to red in highsec unless you're participating in a suicide gank. If something is a legal target that you can shoot without getting concorded you can shoot it with your safety set yellow. If you have your safety set green you can shoot anything that won't get you flagged as a suspect.
There is no excuse for getting concorded by accident. |

Pfff, never not fly with red safety.
You never know when you're going to come across something that simply must explode, and might lose the chance if you have to change safety settings.
EvE is hard. It's harder if you're stupid.
I couldn't have said it better.

Confirmed, red is for naughty people. And unexpected accidental concord is the best kind of. wtf concord |

It's a bit of a weird one. I once went to an offline POS that I had decced and there was an empty shuttle there that was showing a red war target marker so naturally I shot it (safety on green) and was a bit surprised to see a killmail with the pilots name on it :)
At one time you could click on an empty ship then click on the portrait to see who it belonged to but sometime a year or more ago CCP did one of their stealth patches and now you can only click on the ship and Show Info and it says "voetius's Ibis" or some such.

Red is for silly people (outside intentional suicide ganks).
I'll add one more situation where you might consider red safety in high - you have already committed to a jump into lowsec and have smartbombs fitted. But if your route is Odotte (0.5) - Stegette (0.5) - Ravarin (0.4), you should undock in Odotte with your choice of yellow or green safety, jump to Stegette, then select the Ravarin gate, hit 'jump' and while in warp change to red.
Then if you do get a red card in Ravarin, don't jump back to Stegette without waiting 15 minutes....

It's not an if. If you shoot something in highsec that you need your safety set red to be able to shoot you will get concorded. Subsequently unless you intend to get concorded having your safety set red doesn't help you in any way, it just enables you to kill yourself by pressing the wrong button.
Lowsec hard men often explode hilariously because they insist on having their safety on red for no reason when in highsec. Whenever I find myself dealing with people who normally operate in lowsec during my highsec escapades I make a point to count how many of them die to concord because they shot the wrong thing, last time was Brave and there were 2 of them, plus 4 with killrights that died to neutrals as did two logi pilots that didn't understand what the definition of "neutral" is.

Once saw a whole gang in low go flashy red on a gate.....and then jump into hisec once the weapons timer expired.
Hilarity then ensued.

If someone bests me I have no issue with them getting a killmail. Besides, I probably have a weapons timer in this situation.
