What is the advantage of using hybrid over projectile, other than fitting them onto ships with the hybrid bonuses? From what I can see, both types of guns of similar sizes have similar stats BUT projectiles can (a) do more than kin+therm damage and (b) use no caps.
Suppose you knew that you were going to fight only a rail gun ship like the Megathron, would you not gear your ship predominantly to resist vs. thermal and kinetic damages? It seems to me that you could not do likewise for a Min. ship.
So I am confused why hybrids are popular considering that they use cap and do only two types of damages. ..

Range is the key factor, I believe. And those bonuses really mount up at higher skill levels.

Well blaster's do ALOT more damage than auto cannons in close but shorter range and need cap.
Rails do much better Dps and better op range but artillery deals much more damage per hit and needs no cap but got a real slow refire rate.
Over all go with the ships bonus. !

This seems true until you consider that the tech 2 ammo that Minmatar have is explosive/kin only. Minmatar similarly do not have a strong EM damage and only one range option[for artillery] for good thermal damage.
The only real strong choice they have is to switch to thermal damage with Phased Plasma for autocannons. They do not have this advantage when fighting with artilleries. They can also choose a predominatly kinetic weapon, but in most situations, the explosive barrage will be a better choice. EMP is pretty much a worthless ammo[less damage vs armor than phased plasma and only 10% more vs shields] when it gets down to it[its also worse than phased plasma for ratting sansha]. So that while Minmatar can change damage for PvP, it typically isnt advantagous to do so over barrage. Though there is a benefit to bringing along phased plasma in your hull incase you meet a tech 2 amarran ship.
So while this does mean that Minmatar can change their damage types, the reality of the situation is that they cannot do so as well as some people like to think. The main advantage of damage type switching is the ability to be decently strong against nearly any enemy group by bringing the right ammo.
When it comes down to it though, the real thing is that you can never be sure you are going to see a paticular type of setup, even in tournament play people will sometimes pull switch-a-roos. The few examples of ensuring a specific weapon/ship combination would probably be relegated to the most hardcore of roleplayers[CVA for example does not enforce Amarran ship design], and even then some ships in the line up will toss you curveballs[All of Gallente and Caldari, Amarr Drone Boats, Minmatars with phased plasma] ---------------------------------------- Thou Shalt "Pew Pew" |
