I know this seems entirely random, but I just finished listening to Ode To Billi Joe, and that song always gives me the creeps. It isn't directly scary, but the atmosphere created in the song is haunting IMO. Any song that comes to mind for you all? |

Elend has produced a lot of music I would characterize as scary or disturbing. An ex-symphony composer from France teamed up with two other great talents. It's a sort of darkwave symphonic classical thing with some industrial in between (mostly on the later albums). The grand works are the triology they made based on John Milton's Paradise Lost though. For The Umbersun, they use two choires... one Angelic and one Infernal. I'll leave it up to you to imagine how an infernal choir sounds like. I fell asleep with Melpomene from The Umbersun playing on my headphones once... I woke up in the middle of the song and though I was in hell or something. Somehow they manage to build up images of the gates of hell opening just with the intrumental parts... add the infernal choir for the "damned souls screaming in burning agony" effect and a strangely desperatly growling tenor trying to vocalise the voice of despair from the mouth of Lucifer and you got yourself some disturbing moments as a listener. It does not get any better.
Raison D'etre is also somewhat in the same field. Quite disturbing ambient darkwave that really sets the mood and then sneaks in scary vocals and chanting voices. Try The Wastelands
Amorteus Nocturne has a rather disturbing track aswell...Try listening to "Upon the 13th hour"
Then you have Abruptum... A lot of pretty plain noise black metal, but some times they hit the right combination of strange growling noices, eiry keyboard and primitive, monotomous guitar and drumwork to be classified as creepy.

Ohh. so many good ones.
Mazzy Star: Into Dust The singer, Hope Sandoval has the most amazing voice, it just seems beautifully, hauntingly fragile to me. (did'nt harm her tht's she's drop dead gorgeous even now, and more so in the early 90's when this was recorded....)
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. "the carney" and "Lovely Creature" both set me on edge. "Lovely creature" is very listenable, but with very evocative imagery.
Bauhaus: Hollow Hills. makes me think of the pictish barrows on the hilltops above my childhood home, the tombs of old kings. Reading Lord of the rings as a kid did'nt do my imagination any good, knowing what was only a bit up the road :)
Xymox, the Clan of Xymox: Stranger - amazing, early electro, with the strangest background sound you'll ever hear - mongolian throat-singing, apparently. it also reminds me of seeing them live, swathed in smoke, and light. amazing gig.
Polly Jean Harvey: Down by the Water - particularly the closing whisper.
The Psychedelic Furs Pretty in Pink is a lovely peice of 80's pop. untill the moment that you realise what those lyrics are about, and forget that it was used in a film with molly ringwald... dark, very dark indeed.
The Rolling Stones, Under My Thumb. it's one of those ones you need to listen to - it's bright, it's perky, and it's viciously mysogynistic, almost to the point of being an assault on the subject. makes me shiver every time.
The Sisters of Mercy 1959. The entire "floodland" album was one long celebration of nuclear holocaust that somehow did'nt happen - from the "mother russia rain down down down" lines of the opening to the burnt out comedown of Neverland.... but it's 1959, the quiet, unassuming one tucked away that gets me. it's raw, heartfelt, and haunting in its honesty.

....
QFT... Flowers In December - not perhaps the creepiest song, but she has a voice to haunt anyone's dreams.
couple more
Teethgrinder - Therapy? More for the video than the song, but then I used to have nightmares about having my teeth smashed out Child Psychology - Black Box Recorder; watch it and think about it for a couple of minutes and the creepiness sets in

QFT "the carney" is pretty damn creepy. "Song of Joy" from Murder Ballards messes with my head as well.
The orb "We're Pastie To Be Grill You", creepy or funny depending on your state of mind.
Screaming Slave by NIN is pretty nasty and can definitley have a interesting effect on the unsuspecting when engaging in "relaxtivities"

Edited by: Hriskarr Jwolsky on 18/01/2007 13:44:51 I have to say, Hurt, by Johnny Cash is a major one for me. Never before has a song sent shivers down my spine.
Um... Viginti Tres(sp?) - Tool, and another Tool song, Faaip de Opaid(sp). Viginti Tres is kinda creepy film type music, creeps me out when I'm lising to it in bed, and Faaip de Opaid is just sort of a building tension or something type song. Its like some sort of recording, you can hear this guy talking in a paniced voice.
There was another song that really creeps me out, but I cant remember what it is just now.

Which happens to be a Nine Inch Nails cover. Johnny Cash also covered 'Mercy Seat' by Nick Cave.

Liars - Drum's Not Dead : Especially tracks like The Wrong Coat for You Mt. Heart Attack. The Knife - Silent Shout : This was pretty creepy throughout. Xiu Xiu : These guys seem to have a knack for massively creepy songs in places. Deathprod : Probably the creepiest artist I know, especially tracks like Cloudchamber. Try listening to that in a dark room at night. A very disquieting experience.
