Greetings all.
I was hoping that somebody could give me the lowdown on rail guns. I'm curious how viable they are for PvP and (eventually) fleet battles and the like.
I created this Gallente person to play with them, and I'm curious what sort of things I need to train for, and avoid etc.
Are they good for PvP? Is it worth the effort to go Tech 2?
Thank you for reading and hopefully replying.

General theory is that rails are good for PvE and blasters are good for PvP. Blasters do more damage, and because warp scramblers and webbers are short range, you are likely to be at least that close to your target, either by your choice or their's.
Now, general tactical theory is a straightjacket for the unimaginative, but always keep in mind there is a reason that theory exists. Clueless Noob |

T2 large rails are almost essential for fleet battles. Medium rail Brutixes can be very dangerous in small gangs too. Small rails work well on the Enyo and Taranis. So yes they are good for PvP.
Relevant skills are ... almost all of the Gunnery section.
Avoid Javelin T2 ammo unless in specialised circumstances - look at the penalties on it. Avoid the hybrid weapon rigs as well, the penalties are heavy.

Rails are the long-rage hybrid weapon. Blasters are the short-range hybrid weapon. You'll make use of both of those, in particular if you fly Gallente, but for some Caldari ships too.
Both have uses in ratting and in PvP. It's not hard to get the t2 small versions of both, and that leads the way to the longer program of getting the mediums and larges. Remember, however, that t2 guns really shine when combined with t2 ammo, which costs significantly more then t1 ammo. T2 rails an blasters will be invaluable for PvP. You may find the cost-per-shot too high to use t2 ammo in missions... the t2 guns work with t1 ammo, but you sacrifice a lot of the strength of them that way.
If you're flying Gallente, however, your best avenue for missions and ratting will be to train your drone skills. Look at the bonuses to the Vexor, Myrmidon and Dominix. Combined with decent drone skills, you'll be able to rat very effectively without even using guns.

Generally, long-range weapons you would want to use in group pvp, which as you mentioned you were interested in fleet battles. Try reading this great guide composed by GC13 on Caldari weapons. It has a table that lists small to large rails with all their attributes. Link
