Do you get higher value or more of the higher value goods salvaging in low sec? What about the looted modules from the rats? Is it better? Does the Eve program take into account your skills before it hands out the modules? I'm thinking of ratting/salvaging below 0.5 (not alone) but don't want to take unneccessary chances if there's no payoff.

Game doesn't choose the loot you get based on your skills, it's just a matter of luck. In 0.4 and lower oyu generally find destroyers, cruisers and battlecruiser rats. Also it is common with 5-15k frigates, easily tackled in any ship actually (except rookie ship lol). Salvage is dependant on how big the ship was, ie Larger ship = more salvage. A frigate usually gives one unit of salvage and so it counts up. Bounites are much higher in low sec compared to hi sec, so those alone makes ratting more profitable. Basically, lower security = higher payoff but at the cost of larger risks, the rats are far stronger (ratting in anything t1 below cruiser alone is not advised unless you got some serious skills. Also in 0.4 and lower concord won't come to your rescue if somebody starts a pvp fight with you, and people starting pvp fights don't come in velators and ibis that's for sure. There's always more money to be made in lower security systems, but at higher risks, in the end it's up to you. What ships did you and your friends consider to rat in anyways?

The rats have better ships with better modules. They're a little tougher to kill, but you can probably handle them. The better modules are worth more, and the bounties you get for killing them are higher.
However, the jump from 0.5 to 0.4 carries a significant boost to your risk: Player Pirates. You can be ratting in 0.4, just killed off the last one and getting ready to go loot the wrecks, when another player jumps in, warp scrambles your ship, and has you floating in your pod before you even realize he's there.
Umm.. "or so I've heard."

Thanks for the responses. I guess I had probably better stay with 0.5 sec for now. I just have a destroyer with 150mm railguns and 2 salvagers. The rats are a little boring now, but it looks like I would be eaten alive in 0.4. I was thinking of ratting with this guy who says he has a corp that does mining and salvaging. I'll see what he has to say. I don't really want to just fly loads for other people. I make a couple of million per hour ratting/salvaging in 0.5 or 0.6. That doesn't count having to fly to other regions sometimes for the best prices for some of the salvaged materials.

MY suggestion, David, is to find a 0.0 corp/alliance that will let you clean up the wrecks behind the ratters. If you can get into a situation like this, you should be able to collect some of the more valuable components. -=^=-

If you want bigger rats to kill/loot without the huge risk increase of PvP, you could always go into missions. Depending on the mission level, missions can take you all the way up to fighting pirates in battleships. The bounties/modules are weaker than lowsec ratting, but the mission rewards/LP rewards/standing make up for it.

I highly recommend living in lowsec as soon as possible.
One can rat in lowsec with 1-2 weeks of skills in a t1 frigate with t1 parts.
The loot is better, the bounties are better, and most importantly you will learn how to survive in a hostile environment.
Do it while your clone is still cheap. Each time you die, you will learn something.
Eventually you will be able to swim with the sharks without fear. Or even become one yourself.

I usually I usually rat in low-sec (0.2-0.3), flying a destroyer, low SP char.
Some figures (estimated, not an exact statistic):
- approx. 1m ISK bounty/h - approx. 250m¦ loot/h. Usually at least one (named) module worth something (i.e. >1m ISK) - approx. 20 parts salvaged/h - approx. 1 faction spawn per 10 hours
In my opinion, the risk of being killed by pirates isn't very high if you take precautions (watch local, use the scanner, safespots, align to warp out etc.) Most important: try to find a system/constellation not to busy. Otherwise you have to be very careful, and beeing overcautious will negatively affect your income (warp out to often).
I don't know if it's worth the risk (did not really compare in terms of isk/h yet) ... but at least there is some risk, which makes the game more interesting, in my opinion.
